Lovynia Frost was an Omega in the Lightless Moon Pack in Ohio. Her mother was the head kitchen omega, Katrina. Her father, Owen, was the head warrior. She was 17 with her 18th birthday only a month away, on October 29th. The Alpha, Joseph, had planned to pass his title to his son, Joshua, on October 28th, his 18th birthday. The Beta, Thomas, and the Gamma, Anthony, had planned to pass their titles down to their sons on the same night. She lived in a small house on the pack lands and was home alone, waiting for her parents to get home from work. She was looking through different job options available in the pack. After an hour of looking, she got started on supper. Just as it was nearly finished, her mother came home and entered the kitchen.
“Good evening, honey. How was your day?” Katrina asked.
“I should be asking you that, Mom. How was work?”
“Busy as usual. Future Alpha Joshua said hello today. He sat with a few of the younger pups and ate lunch with them. He’s going to be a great Alpha. He really cares about the pack.” Katrina said. Lovynia smiled and finished supper. Just as she was plating it, her father came home.
“Honeys, I’m home!” he said as he entered the kitchen. Lovynia greeted him and Katrina wrapped her arms around him and gave him a passionate kiss.
“I’ve missed you, my love.” She whispered. He pecked her lips and guided her to the table. Lovynia had set their plates and was getting her own.
“So, sweetie. Have you figured out what you want to do yet?” Owen asked. He took a bit of food, smiled and nodded to his daughter.
“Definitely not the kitchen. I might make edible food, but it’s not nearly as good as what Mom and the kitchen crew makes for the pack. You’re just too nice to tell me my food tastes like cardboard.” Lovynia laughed. Katrina and Owen give each other a look and Lovynia grasps her chest in faux pain. She sits down and tells them she hasn’t found anything that called to her yet.
“That’s alright. No rush. You still have plenty of time.” Owen said. They finish their food with small talk and the ceremony at the end of the month. Lovynia talked about how excited she was to meet her wolf and couldn’t wait to see what she looked like.
After they finished their food, Lovynia cleared the table and washed the dishes. Her cell phone rang, but she let it go to voicemail while she worked. After the dishes were cleaned, dried, and put away, she checked her phone. The Alpha’s daughter, April, had called and left her a message. They had been best friends since they were in diapers. Lovynia was close to all of the future ranked members. They had all become close friends in school and hung out together during the summers outside of school. She hadn’t seen much of the future ranked members in the last month because of them training to take over the pack. April was always willing to hang out with her friend to get away from the packhouse.
“Hey girl, guess who? You wanna hang out tomorrow? I’m free after 9 in the morning. Call me and we can go to the city and walk the mall.” April said in the voicemail. Lovynia asked her parents if there was anything they needed from the city.
“Not that we can think of. Why do you ask?” Katrina asked.
“April left me a voicemail asking if I wanted to hang out with her tomorrow.” Lovynia replied.
“If we think of anything, we’ll send you a text.” Owen said. Lovynia said good night to her parents and went to her room to get ready for bed. She had a strange dream that night. She was in an open area with nothing to see for miles. A heavy fog covered the ground up to her waist. She heard a wolf howl in the distance. When she turned to look, she saw two large shadows, each shaped like a wolf. She tried to move toward them, but when she took one step, she found herself in her bed. The dim light of dawn peeked through her window.
“That was such a weird dream.” She said to herself. She shook the dream from her thoughts as she took a shower. As the hot water soothed her, she thought about her friend April and how much fun they would have. Once Lovynia was cleaned, she dried off and got clothes from her closet for the day.
“Good morning.” She sang as she entered the kitchen for breakfast.
“Good morning, sweetie. You’re up early.” Owen said, sipping his coffee.
“I had a weird dream and woke up just as the sun was rising.” She replied.
“What was the dream about?” Katrina asked as she sat down with two plates of eggs and bacon. Lovynia told her parents about the dream and asked what they thought it meant. She has had strange dreams before, but not like that. The last time she had a strange dream, it was three years ago. She dreamed of their neighbor’s wife giving birth to triplets even though multiples were non-existent on both sides of their families. Lovynia said something about it to her parents, but they told her it was just a dream. A month later, their neighbor said his mate was pregnant, and two weeks after that he said they were having triplets. Katrina and Owen asked the Alpha what might have happened, but he didn’t know. He asked an Elder, but she only said she needed to ask other elders. Nothing ever came of it, so they never brought it up again.
“I don’t have any idea what your dream could mean, honey.” Katrina said, patting Lovynia on the back.
“It’s probably just something my mind is doing since it’s only a month until my birthday. I’m not too worried about it. Have you thought of anything you need or want from the mall? I’m gonna meet with April in a couple of hours.” Lovynia said. Owen and Katrina shook their heads. They finished their breakfast and got ready for work.
“Bye, Mom. Bye, Dad. Have a good day at work. I love you.” Lovynia told her parents.
“Have fun at the mall, honey. We love you, too.” They said back. Lovynia locked the door behind them and started washing the dishes from breakfast. Before she knew it, it was nine and there was a knock at the door. Lovynia peeked through the peep hole and smiled.
“APRIL!” she shouted as she opened the door.
“LOVYNIA!” April shouted back. They hugged and bounced for a few moments.
“It’s been weeks since we were last able to hang out. How have you been?” Lovynia asked, pulling out of the hug, and dragging April inside the house.
“I’ve been good. Been busy with training to be a nurse. Dr. Marina is so nice, I can’t wait to start full-time at the clinic. What about you? I haven’t really seen you training anywhere.”
“I haven’t figured out what I want to do yet. Aside from not the kitchen. I still can’t cook all that well. What I make is edible, but Mom and Dad are just too nice to tell me it tastes gross.” Lovynia chuckled. April laughed and talked more about her training as a nurse. She suddenly got quiet and looked toward the door, her eyes wide.
“April? What’s wrong?” Lovynia asked. There was a knock at the door and Lovynia went to see who was there. She was surprised to see the Gamma’s son, Drew, the Beta’s son, Cody, and the Alpha’s son, Joshua. She opened the door and greeted them.
“Lovynia, April told me you were gonna go to the city today. Mind if we tag along?” Joshua asked. Lovynia blushed and looked to April on the couch, but she wasn’t there. She looked back to the boys and Drew wasn’t there anymore. They heard moans from the side of the house and went to take a look.
“OH MY GOD!” Lovynia shouted when she turned the corner of the house. April and Drew were tonguing each other and hugging each other.
“Ahem.” Joshua cleared his throat, but they didn’t seem to hear him.
“Ahem!” he tried a bit louder. No reaction.
“AHEM!” there was still no reaction.
“DREW! STAND DOWN!” Joshua shouted. That got their attention and quickly pulled away from each other. Lovynia walked to April and nudged her with her shoulder.
“Girl, you and the Gamma’s son? Nice. I’m happy for you. You’ll make a great Gamma female.” She said, hugging her friend.
“I was hoping he would be my mate. I’ve had a huge crush on him since grade school.” April said. Joshua and Cody were congratulating Drew on finding his mate. Joshua put his arm over Drew’s shoulders and asked,
“You’re gonna do right by my sister, right?” Drew nodded his head, his eyes on April. Drew had just turned 18 the day before and April turned 18 a week earlier. With her training to be a nurse and him training to take over as Gamma, they didn’t see each other until just then.
“Now, Future Alpha Joshua. You wouldn’t hurt your future brother-in-law, would you?” Lovynia asked in a teasing tone.
“If he ever does anything to hurt my sister, yes. I would.” He replied, staring daggers at Drew. He turned his eyes to Lovynia and said,
“I thought I told you to just call me Josh when it’s not anything official. Like you used to when we were kids.”
“I’m sorry. I started getting into the habit of calling you Future Alpha. I can start calling you by your name again, Josh.” She was close friends with all the future ranked members, but April and Josh were her closest friends.
“Are we still going to the mall or did this change our plans?” Cody asked, gesturing to April and Drew.
“I’m okay to go if you are, my sweet.” Drew purrs. April giggles and nods her head. It was only a 15 minute walk to the mall, and the weather was beautiful, so they all walked. April and Drew were practically glued to each other the whole time, but they still talked with the others, a little.
They spent a few hours going from shop to shop, getting various things from several stores. They all had lunch at the Taco Bell in the mall. When they were headed back to the packhouse, something caught Lovynia’s eye and made her stop. Josh was holding her hand and was jerked back from the sudden stop.
“Lovynia? What’s wrong?” he asked. She didn’t answer him, just kept looking into the distance. Josh followed her gaze, but didn’t see anything except for an open field up on a hill, a few miles away. He gently tugged on Lovynia’s arm and got her attention. She shook her head.
“Sorry, what did you say?” she asked.
“I asked you what was wrong? You just suddenly stopped.” He replied. The others had noticed and went to see what was going on.
“I’m sorry. I just thought I saw something that was in my dream last night. You remember when I had that dream of my neighbors having a set of triplets?” they all nodded. Lovynia kept no secrets from her friends, even her strange dreams.
“I had a weird dream last night. I think I was in that field, but it was covered in thick fog. There were two large wolves standing in the distance. I only saw their silhouettes. I woke up right after that.” She explained. Josh looked to the others, and they all shrugged their shoulders.
“Maybe that was just the first part of it? It has been a while since you had a dream like that, right?” April asked. Lovynia nodded.
“Maybe you need to see more to understand it better.” Cody suggested. They all nodded and Lovynia walked with them to her house. She said good night to everyone and went inside. Her parents were already home and had ordered pizza with bread sticks, marinara sauce, Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, and Mug Root Beer. Lovynia tells them about April and Drew being mates and all the fun she had with her friends that day. She also told them about the field she saw and what they all decided on. Katrina and Owen agreed that it would be best to wait for more dreams to see a clearer picture. Lovynia went to bed and just let her dreams take over.
