Blake didn’t understand what she did to him. He couldn’t get too close, but he couldn’t stay away, either. Emily and Blake had grown up in the same neighborhood, attended the same crèche as children, and even ended up at the same university as adults. They were friends, or at least, that’s what he told himself. But the truth was far more complicated, and Emily seemed to know it.

She had told him about her imaginary first boyfriend, but when she did, all he could feel was a wave of jealousy and frustration. He knew she felt something for him something deeper than friendship but he wasn’t willing to risk it all.

Emily had lied to him about her first boyfriend, hoping it would provoke a confession from him. She wanted him to admit the feelings they both knew were there. But all he did was remain silent, retreating deeper into himself. Blake just couldn’t find the courage to say what was on his heart.

Every time she came around, it was like a battle inside of him. His darker, more instinctive side threatened to break free, but he pushed it down. He could never allow himself to act on it, not when he knew how much they meant to each other. But in his dreams, in the moments when he could let go of control, he could almost taste her, feel her skin under his hands.

Introduction
Emily has always been close to Blake, but lately, their bond feels different. They’ve known each other since childhood, growing up in the same neighborhood and attending the same crèche, then university. It’s as if their lives were always meant to be intertwined, a friendship forged through years of shared experiences. But now, something has shifted. The easy camaraderie they once had no longer feels natural. What once felt simple, hanging out, laughing, talking late into the night—has become complicated by a tension neither of them can quite name. Blake notices it most when they’re alone, when the silence between them stretches a little too long, and his eyes linger on her a little too often. Emily has always been beautiful, but lately, she’s become impossible to ignore. The way she talks, the way she smiles, the way she moves through the world, it’s all changed. Or maybe it’s him. Maybe he’s changed. His feelings for her, once buried deep under the safe umbrella of friendship, are beginning to surface, and Blake doesn’t know how to handle them. He'd always known there was something more between them, something unspoken, but he'd never been brave enough to acknowledge it. For years, they’ve circled around each other, testing the boundaries of their friendship, never crossing the line. But now, it feels like that line is becoming harder to see, and he’s terrified of what will happen if he steps over it. The tipping point comes one night when Emily reveals something she’s never mentioned before—her “first boyfriend.” She talks about him casually, as if it’s just another piece of her past. But Blake’s mind went into overdrive. He'd never heard her speak about a boyfriend before. Emily has always been independent, fiercely so, and the idea of her with someone else ignites something dark and possessive in him. “I never told you about him before, did I?” Emily’s voice is light, teasing almost. “He was the first person who ever made me feel…” She trails off, her eyes drifting to the side, as if she’s remembering something she’d rather forget. Blake can’t process the words fast enough. Instead of feeling relieved, or even curious, all he feels is anger, a deep, primal frustration that she’s never shared this with him before. He doesn’t know why it hurts so much, why her confession feels like a betrayal. He has no right to feel this way, he’s never claimed her, never even said a word about his own feelings. But the idea of her with someone else stirs something in him that he’s not prepared to face. Emily looked at him, her expression expectant, waiting for him to say something, to do something. She’s hoping for a reaction, for him to finally admit what they both already know, that he feels more than just friendship for her. But all Blake could do was stare at her, speechless. He’s paralyzed by his own fear, by the weight of everything left unsaid between them. And so, he retreats into silence. Every moment with Emily leaves him torn. He’s battling a war inside himself, between the need to protect their friendship and the desire to finally tell her the truth. As their connection becomes more strained, Blake realizes that their relationship is pushing the boundaries of what’s safe. He can’t keep pretending he doesn’t want more, but he also can’t bear the thought of losing her completely. He’s faced with a choice: risk it all, expose his heart, and finally confront the feelings he’s been hiding for so long, or pull away, letting her slip through his fingers and keeping his distance to preserve the friendship that has always been the foundation of their bond.
