She had sat down so as to be near the candle, at the same time, hoping vainly that it might give out a little heat to ease the cold, which had seeped over her whole body until she felt that she was encased in ice. When her teeth began to chatter, she pulled up her full skirt and covered her bare shoulders with it. As she did so, it struck her that she might be warmer if her petticoat was against her legs instead of over the whalebone of the crinoline.
