Sloane's POV
True to her words, Celia had the divorce agreement drafted by the next morning. At exactly 10:00 a.m. I received the agreement in my mail.
“No going back from here, Scarlett,” I said to my wolf, as I stood in front of the floor length mirror in my room, with the printed out divorce papers in hand.
Scarlett nodded slowly in agreement.
Since finding out about the ultimate betrayal by Sterling, Scarlett has been incredibly quiet. I understand though, getting rejected by one's mate was heartbreaking, but not being given the dignity of being rejected straight to your face was a different level of disrespect.
And Scarlett was hurt. Hurt was me putting it mildly.
Even Alec, Sterling's wolf didn't say a word about it–but his actions did though. He was incredibly quiet and distant since we woke up from the coma.
Exhaling slowly, I pushed all thoughts of Sterling and Alec to the back of my mind. I wouldn't want to reminisce on the past, and end up having a change of heart about divorcing Sterling.
I walked out of my room with the confidence of a woman about to take on the world. A smile curved my lips as I again read the clause in the divorce agreement my clueless husband would soon sign.
A clause that would give me full custodial rights of Toby.
"Here goes," I muttered under my breath and made my way out.
"For your signature," I said minutes later in Sterling's office as I handed him the documents.
The divorce papers I had already slipped between a stack of papers regarding finances for an upcoming pack event. As he had a hundred times before, Sterling signed everything without even glancing through once.
Perfect.
He thrust the papers at me and went right on talking on the phone. Not once did he even look at me. I stared at the papers, the keys to my freedom, in my hands, and it took a lot of willpower not to jump right there in excitement.
Hurrying back to my room, I mailed the documents to Celia.
Almost immediately she sent an email.
Documents received and filed. Officially initiating divorce proceedings.
For the rest of the day, I didn't handle any Pack activities-it was no longer my cross to carry, besides Penelope seems to have settled into the role just fine.
During dinner, I focused all of my attention on Toby, but I could feel Sterling staring daggers at me. For a moment I thought he had caught up to my plans, but it turns out I was getting that look because of Penelope.
“You don't need me to tell you to apologize to Penelope after what you did, right?" Sterling gritted out.
No shame. Not a single piece of it.
Sterling continued. “If you're tired of having her as a guest, you could have said so.”
Yea right, like anything I ever say is being taken seriously. And given what I know now about Penelope, that'll just be another excuse for you to label me as a problem.
“You can't just go around hurting people!” Sterling snarled, banging his fist on the dining table.
Toby flinched, staring at his Dad with wild terrified eyes.
“It's okay, baby. Mommy's here,” I assured Toby, then signaled at an omega to take him to his room.
The moment they were out of eye and ear shot, I turned around to face Sterling, totally ignoring Penelope who was at the side acting like she isn't the one instigating Sterling's actions.
“Well that guests of yours almost killed our son,” I said calmly, but there was nothing calm about this and Sterling knew.
Sterling clenched his jaw. “You have no proof,” Sterling began to say.
“Proof?” I scoffed in disbelief. I can't even recognize my own husband anymore, or maybe I never knew him. I guess I was too blinded by love to notice that he's a walking red sea! Jeez!
“Let it go, Sloane,” Scarlett said through the mind link. “Now isn't the best time to pick up a fight.”
Scarlett was right. Now wasn't the best time to pick up a fight. I'll just draw unnecessary attention which I can't afford right now to myself.
So, I smiled…or at least tried to, and I'm sure it came out as a grimace, because Sterling raised his brows at me.
“You're right, Sterling. I have no proof,” I said softly. “And it's extremely rude of me to just blame Penelope. She was only trying to help. Isn't that right, Penelope?” I threw the question at Penelope who has been unusually quiet.
Penelope just gave me a half-assed smile in response.
I stayed at the dining table for about a minute more before excusing myself and heading over to Toby's room.
He was still awake, and just laid in bed staring at the ceiling.
I read him three of his favorite bedtime stories, and once he was asleep, I brought out his suitcase, packed a few clothes in it, before heading to my room to do the same.
I had just one last thing to do and with that we can both leave this Pack for good
