Chapter One
Prologue
*The moon*
"Hecate! Thanks for coming, dear cousin."
"Selene, this better be important."
"You were always one to get down to business. Anyways I need help."
"Because I owe you a favor. What is it?
"It's him."
"Absolutely not! I will not go to battle with him. Do you know the chaos it will cost?"
"Why don't you listen to what I have to say first! It's not a battle in our realm. It's a battle between our followers, our children on earth."
"And you need me for what?"
"I need your blessing to mate one of my children to yours. I need a powerful one. Please,"
"You know our children don't get along, but for you I'll allow it.
*Thunder*
A Black shadowy figure appears
"Hecate! If you get involved with Selene, you will regret this!"
"Leave us be! How dare you try and challenge me. Know your place."
*Thunder*
Black shadowy figure disappears.
"I'm sorry Hecate. I'll figure something out."
"I'm sick and tired of him. Let's combine forces. Who is he to threaten me? I'll pick a powerful witch. Let me move a few family lines around. Selene we will end him."
"You sound so scary when you get like that. I have my pick. He's a beta from a good pack. You have nothing to worry about."
"Selene. Meet Aura."
"Let me see! She's beautiful."
"We will give them our blessings."
"Thank you Hecate. I knew I could count on you.
"Don't thank me yet. It's at least going to be a millennium in human years when. This plays out. My power can only hold him off so long. And it's up to them if they want to go down this path. All we can do is watch."
*Scene*
"I'm sorry but this isn't correct."
"Ugh! Again? But I made sure it was the right color this time."
"I'm sorry Aura but cutting corners with potions can have bad side effects. You can kill someone! Try again next week. Such a shame though."
"What do you mean?"
"You come from such powerful lines of witches. So it’s sad to see this low-grade potion. We will have to continue this next week."
I rushed out of my teacher's house and walked down from the front porch onto the street. I'm tired of them always reminding me of my ancestry. And by them, I mean the rest of my coven. They don’t do it out of spite, but it’s annoying as f**k. I get it! I'm supposed to lead the next generation of witches in my coven. It’s my “destiny” apparently. It’s too much pressure sometimes. I’ve been alive for 25 years and for most of it the words destiny and fate have always been whispered in my ears. When I was born my parents said I had a strong glow of aura around me, hence my name. My parents just knew that our strong lineage wouldn’t end with them. My parents have been born with luck and fate on their side. As the oldest I was their pride and joy. I was advanced in healing magic at a young age. I didn’t have to use potions or even plant magic to help me, I somehow just did it. Well, when I was younger I could. But now I can’t even put together a mid-tier potion without it blowing up in my face. If it was up to me I’d rather focus on plant healing. I find peace in it. It is more old fashioned and traditional as it’s mostly used for physical wounds. But I’m more drawn to that. And that’s why I decided to go the easy way out and slack off. I can't believe I paid eighty dollars for that junk potion. When I find that punk I'm going to kill him. I got into my car and made the drive back to my house. I can’t say my life has been pretty bad, I mean coming from a strong family of witches did have its upsides. More wealth, more opportunities and feeling like a celebrity even to other covens. I mean yeah my parents work great paying jobs but that old money is great. It affords me the lifestyle I want. Which translates to I'm pretty much lazy and I should have applied myself more in college. My home wasn't that far outside town. Lume Manor is a 7 bedroom 8 bathroom mansion. I love how it is surrounded by woods, all the plants a herbalist like me needs. I love having the freedom of going around and picking fresh herbs from my "secret garden". Turning into the driveway I drove past the front gate security. Randolph, our security guard and ex-cop, hates when I speed up. I do it to f**k around with him, but he's a pretty cool guy. He's a witch too but has no powers. Unfortunately some witches aren't born with powers. In most covens we try to support those without. I just wish he was able to be open with his family about him being a witch. It's not uncommon for witches born without powers to marry mundane folks. But they have to hide who they are from the ones they love. I left my car in front of the house and walked in the front door.
"Mom! I'm home."
"Hello my corner cutting child."
I stopped dead in my tracks as my mom came around the corner. She looked so beautiful even when she was mad. Her dark brown eyes that can pierce your heart with one look. My mom and my dad are the epitome of wealth and beauty. I look like a little of both of them but I don't think I could compare. If looks could kill I would have dropped dead.
"So you found out?"
"Is that the best you can say?!"
"I'm sor…."
"You're twenty-five years old! Why do you continue to play these childish games!? You are our future, our hope. Not only did you embarrass yourself but our family name. If only you could be like your younger brother Eden."
Uggh! My younger brother Eden is the golden child. He has succeeded in everything I've failed in. A child prodigy he was. Potions, spells, and hexes he can do it all. Top-tier magic he produces at nineteen and there's a rumor going around that he doesn't need to say incantations when casting. I've never seen it myself but I don't doubt it the lucky bastard he is. Speaking of Eden, when I get my hands on him, he better pray to Hecate that I don't choke him out and kill him.
"Ouch mom, my feelings. I thought we praised being true to oneself."
"I just want you to be your best, that's all. I love you."
"I love you too."
I started walking out of the living area to go upstairs to Eden's room when mom called out.
"Don't hurt your brother too badly!"
Of course she knew and let him off the hook. Sorry mom but tonight you will lose a son. I walked up to the second floor and headed to the west wing where my brother's room is opposite of mine in the east wing. I was in front of his door when I saw he had put his wards up. Lucky for me, hacking wards were not too difficult for me. I broke it down to this , a ward is like a tie or a knot. And all ties and knots have a loose end. Find the end of the string and one tiny pull the whole ward falls apart. I'm not a thriving criminal here but back in high school days I may have snuck out the house a couple of times. Seeing it was Edens ward it took a little more concentration to find the multiple loose ends, but piece by piece it all came crashing down. He should have just physically locked the door. I opened his door. He was sleeping. My dumb prey. I walked in fists ready to fight.
"Eden."
He jumped up out of his sleep like he had woken up from a nightmare. Dressed in his boxers and durag, he was clearly dazed and surprised I got past his wards.
"Yo! How your black ass get in?
"Ah! You dare use foul language towards your older sister? Trickery and swearing, two sins I can't forgive you for."
"No please! It was an accident!"
"Lies! Another sin I can't forgive!"
I loved being the older sister. It gave me the chance to exert my dominance over him when we were younger. Don't get it wrong, we have a pretty strong relationship. Even though he's always been the golden child we've always looked out for each other. He usually got me out of trouble with our parents, and I made sure the friends in his life kept him on the straight and narrow. We couldn't have Mr. Golden get into the wrong things. I mean there's only room for one underachiever. But right now he was going to get his ass kicked. Eden jumped off his bed and started to run towards the door. Our favorite childhood game of cat and mouse. I chased him and put him in a headlock.
"Tell me the truth, traitor."
"f**k off!"
Eden managed to maneuver out from under my arms. I grabbed his arms and we both fell down. Quickly scrambling towards his midsection. I quickly jabbed my fist to his chest.
"I paid eighty dollars for it, you bastard!"
"All right! I'll tell you. Mercy please."
I let him go. I pack a pretty hard punch. He better give me a good answer. No one in our coven knows I'm still getting magic training. It's embarrassing I was supposed to be done back in high school. I don't have a lot to go but having to redo this potion test is setting me back. If only I didn't slack off back then maybe I wouldn't be in this predicament. Eden and I now were sitting on the floor in front of his bed.
"Why a knock off? You knew this was important."
"I'm sorry but you're not going to like this."
"Just spit it out tell me."
"It was dad. He overheard us talking about it-"
“f**k man.”
I'm not surprised. To my dad I was a failure who disgraced the family name. The Lumes and the Courys coming together as one. Our goddess Hectate was shining her blessings upon them. But I digress. I knew I shouldn’t have cheated but, potions not containing plants get me frustrated. I've always been fascinated with them. I memorized different types of plant medicines, what they could be combined with, what could make them poisonous and what temperature they can live in. Unfortunately that just made my dad more distant towards me. He didn't understand why his first born couldn't even do her magic studies done in a normal time frame. If it was up to him Eden would lead our coven into the next generation. They had a great relationship. Dad made sure he showed how proud he was of him. Newer cars, expensive gifts and trips. While he bought me my car I had to beg my mom to let dad pay for my stuff too.I'm not jealous but still some more support would have been nice.
"You know he's going to bring it up sooner or later."
"Yep. I don't feel like dealing with it though. I'm going to go to my garden."
"I will cover for you."
"Thank you."
My secret garden I like to call it. My peace, my solace. Where I get to be myself. I grow, harvest and offer sacrifices to Hectate. My fruits and vegetables I grow of course. Sometimes I feel like she's right next to me enjoying her meal in front of me. Not many in our coven offer sacrifices, but I feel a deeper connection to her when I do. I headed out the backyard. Our Manor was pretty big so I planted my garden a twenty-five minute walk away from the house. I made sure I put my garden next to a little pond so I can easily water my plants. It was beautiful there. After making sure I avoided the staff I started off my little walk.
*Aiden's P.o.v*
*Four miles from Lume Manor*
"All right, let's call it a day. Go wash up and eat."
I finally finished handling training. While I loved to train, I couldn't keep my head focused. Something was wrong with our Alpha but I couldn't get a hold of him today. We were so damn busy. Being his beta was very rewarding. But not opening up to me bothered me. I felt like he couldn't trust me. Our pack was well respected within other packs. We weren't the biggest but we are brave and strong. We fought honorably for our territory and never lost a battle.
"Aiden!"
I turned around from putting some equipment together. That annoying voice I could not forget. My ex-lover.
"Jasmine, what do you want? My schedule is very busy today."
"I'm just concerned for you, that's all. I feel like you have been avoiding me since we ended it."
"Don't waste my time, I'm not in the mood to talk."
"Fine, let's spar.
I chuckled a little bit. I'm not gonna lie, sparing with her was fun. A great ancestry of warriors she came from. So strong and fierce. I loved that in a she wolf. But she wasn't my mate and my wolf can't stand her if I'm to be honest. My wolf Amorak is dark gray, strong and a great hunter. He’s a little upset because we haven’t found a mate yet, but I hope it’ll happen soon.
“Stop what you’re doing.”
I turned around and it was our alpha Mark. Jasmine bowed her head in respect.
"Alpha."
"Afternoon Jasmine. You're dismissed, I need to talk to Aiden alone please."
"Right away sir."
Jasmine bowed her head. She gave me a quick look and walked away. One thing about Jasmine, she was different from other women. She knew her place in the pact and never overstepped her boundaries. That's due to her upbringing. Her parents were always well respected. They definitely were a little rigid and stuck in the past though. But they definitely did a great job raising her. I think that's what attracted me to her in the first place. Amorak didn't care about any she-wolf who wasn't our mate. I had to fight him thick and threw just to be with her.
"Mark you finally reveal yourself."
"Sorry brother. So much has been on my mind these past few weeks."
"What's going on?"
"We have a problem."
"Spill it out already. There is nothing our pack can't do without you leading us."
"It's demons Mark. f*****g demons.
