He was staring down at her. The world came into focus as she stared into the deepest golden eyes she’s ever seen. His black hair was plastered to his brow and part of his face. He looked like he had just walked out of the shower. Mae blinked feeling shy as he continued to stare at her. “Are you alright?” he asked suddenly. Mae nodded. “How’s your arm?” he asked his eyes moving to her arm. She looked down too and saw that her arm was bandaged. Pain flared suddenly making her wince. “It’s painful?” he softly asked touching her arm. “I’ll call Celeste. She said to call her when you experience any pain,” he said getting to his feet. Mae didn’t want him to leave. Not yet – she felt secure and safe with him there. As if he sensed her disquiet, he gave her a reassuring smile. And he walked to the door. Mae’s eyes ran down his broad back. He was big and strong. She’d seen proof of that in the forest when he killed those rogues like they were nothing. She wondered what his name was. Was he the alpha of a pack? And where was she anyway? He walked out of the room, and a few minutes later a beautiful woman with long black hair walked in. She seemed to glide along the floor as if she was floating. She came to a stop in front her, and she reached for his arm. “Larson said you’re in pain,” she said. She unwrapped the bandages and looked at the wound. Mae grimaced and stared down at where the rogues bit her. Teeth marks scored her skin and it looked angry. She hadn’t felt a thing. She thought … Larson rescued her before they could hurt her. Maybe she didn’t feel anything because she was tired. Celeste checked her wounds and wrapped clean bandages on her arm. Mae stared her curious about who she was. She couldn’t sense her wolf or the kind of species she was. But she learned from Mason that didn’t mean she wasn’t a werewolf. Some supernatural being had the abilities to hide their identities. “Are you a healer,” she asked. “You can say that. I perform a lot of duties in the pack though since we are not that many. We all have to do what we can in order to survive.” Survive? Mae stared at her, and that’s when she realized that she hasn’t heard the noises she would associate with a pack. Even though she didn’t exactly grow up in a pack, she expected there to be laughter, and the sound of children playing. But there was none of that. Everything was silent and peaceful. She’d thought that maybe that’s how his pack was. “I made you a potion that will kill any disease you might have caught from the rogues’ bite. We wouldn’t want you to become rabid like them.” The door opened just as she spoke. Larson walked back into the room carrying a mug of something that smelled really bad. “I know it smells bad, but you have to drink it for your safety and ours.” Mae nodded. She understood. She didn’t want to spread any disease in the pack. Larson got closer and sat on the bed. Instead of handing her the cup, he brought it close to her lips. Mae shivered as she stared up at him. “It’s hot, be careful,” he said as he helped her drink from the cup. Mae grimaced as the tasted hit her tongue. Not only did it smell vile, it tasted really bad. “Good,” Larson said encouragingly. Mae smiled at his words. When she was done, he stood up, and walked out of the room. She wished she could call him back. She wanted him to stay with her for just a little while. She blushed as she found Celeste staring at her with a strange look in her eyes. “You should get some rest. I’ll come and check on you in a while,” she said she walked out of the room, leaving her alone. Mae heard the lock click, or maybe she was wrong, because she suddenly felt drowsy. She blinked her suddenly heavy eyes. She tried to lift her hand to rub her eyes, but her limbs felt heavy. Damn. What did she give her? The potion must have been strong, Mae thought as she drifted. She hoped it wasn’t toxic. No. Larson wouldn’t save her so that he could kill her. He would have left her for the rogues. And besides, the room was nicely furnished and there was a light breeze coming through the curtains. If he wanted to kill her, he would have chucked her into some dungeon. Mae groaned as the potion took effect. Her eyes fell closed and she could feel herself sinking. The door opened, and she tried to blink her eyes open, but she couldn’t. She heard two people coming to stand around the bed. A hand was placed on her forehead. She smelled Celeste’s scent all around her. “She’s out like a light,” she said. “Do you think she’ll help us?” Larson’s voice filled the silence. “I don’t know,” Celeste sighed. She sounded sad. Mae blinked her eyes. She wished she could see her face. “Maybe. We have to wait. We are few in number, we can’t take on the vampires alone.” “I know,” Larson said. “Let’s leave her to get some rest. Hopefully when she wakes up she’ll recognize me as her mate.” Mate? “It will happen. Don’t rush it. The prophesy was clear. It is your mate who will take down the evil one and avenge us.” Mate? Mae tried to wake up, but the potion dragged her down into the abyss. “Mae?” she startled awake when a hand touched her cheek softly. She opened her eyes and looked into her sister’s concerned ones. I’ve been dreaming, she thought as she unfolded her body and placed her aching legs on the floor. She groaned as blood rushed through her limbs. “Did you sleep in the chair?” Mystic asked as she looked at her. Mae stood up hating that look in her eyes. She walked to the bathroom ignoring her. She walked to the sink and splashed some water on her face. Her dream rushed through her mind. Larson’s face lingered in her mind. Her heart ached feeling as if she was with him. She hated the fact that her dreams were so vivid sometimes, and that she never dreamt of anything but her past. It was like she was stuck between the present and the past, but the past took up most of her life. “I hate this,” Mystic said as she came to a stop in front of the bathroom door. “I feel like you’re not here, even though you’re right here with me. What is it going to take for you to talk to me? To tell me what the hell happened after you left, because whatever happened is clearly eating you alive. You have to talk t to me, Mae.” “I don’t have to do anything,” Mae said walking out of the bathroom. Mystic snatched her arm and pulled her to a stop. “What? I’m your sister.” Mae stared at her and the words, just slipped out of her mouth. “You haven’t been my sister for a long time,” she said. Mystic gasped. She let go of her. They stared at each other for a while, and then she walked out of the room. Shit…Mae thought closing her eyes. “Mystic wait.”
