Chapter 11

Mia: “If you won’t tell me anything, then I'm going to go find out for myself.” I began to sit up, but Lukas stopped me. “He's still alive” My eyes lit up with hope. “He? It's a boy?” Lukas nodded, but his next words shattered me completely. “He’s alive, but we don't know for how long.” “What do you mean?” “He was born way before the due date and is currently in the incubator. We don't know if he'll make it.” Kate entered, donned in a blue scrub, her hair tied up in a bun. “Thank goodness you're awake,” she placed her stethoscope over my chest and wrote something on my charts. “Lukas said the baby might not live. Is that true?” “His vitals are becoming stable. I think he'll pull through. I can tell he's a strong boy, just like his dad,” Kate gave Lukas a look. “Can I see him?” “Sure. But you can't touch him due to his critical condition.” Seated in a wheelchair, I was taken to the room where he was. A tall glass window stood as a barrier between us. The sight broke my heart into a million pieces. Several wires were attached to his small, wrinkled body. A sob escaped my lips. Lukas gently rubbed my back. “I should have followed you,” Kate lamented, full of regret. I wiped my tears with my palm. “It's not your fault.” “What happened to you? Lukas found you passed out at the party. Don't tell me that scum did that to you.” “What scum?” Lukas' cold voice cut through the air like a sharp knife. “Ethan,” Kate answered. “Ethan?” He clenched his fists. “I swear I'm going to f*****g kill him.” He started heading towards the lobby, but Kate stopped him, standing in his way with her arms spread wide. “You can't do that now. Not in your angry state. Unless you want to start a war." “I don't give a s**t. They want a war? Then they can bring it on. “It wasn't him,” I murmured softly. “Then who?” Kate asked, returning to my side. My eyes stayed on my pup, who just slightly moved its legs. If only Teresa didn't shove me, then my little pup wouldn't have to fight so hard for his life. I was determined to deal with her my own way. “It was too dark outside so I lost my balance and fell.” That was only the half-truth. I was not willing to let Lukas find out Teresa's involvement. He was only going to flip out and might do something rash. “Are you sure that is what happened?” I gave a nod. “Do you want to give him a name now?” “Name? I haven't thought of that.” I didn't even think of a name for him. I felt like the worst mother out there. I turned to look up at Lukas. “How about you name him?” “Me?” Kate and I waited expectantly. “Elian,” he said, his face lit up a little. I nodded in approval, repeating the name in a whisper. “How much longer will he be here?” “A few weeks. Same with you. You're not fully healed yet. We have to closely monitor you both. I'll leave you two to it” I was so focused on Elian that I didn't realize Lukas was staring at me. “Didn't you really just fall?” His voice was low, but sharp. “Yes. You don't believe me.” “I do. Let me take you back.” “Can't I look at him a little more?” “No. You need to rest.” There we go again. I wasn't tired and could spend all day looking at Elian but Lukas just wouldn't listen. I let him wheel me back begrudgingly, glaring at him as he covered me with a blanket. “Get some sleep” “I'm not sleepy,” I snapped. He didn't seem offended by my rude tone and instead gently tucked a stray hair behind my hair. “I thought I had lost you.” He slowly stroked my hair. My anger cleared up at once. Has he finally opened his heart to me? What about Rina? Was it over between them? Those were the questions that swarmed my mind. I intertwined my fingers with his, thinking back to the look on his face when I was brought here. It felt like he truly cared. “Thank you” “I promise to protect you from now on. Get some sleep. We can visit Elian when you wake up.” This time, I didn't argue and closed my eyes obediently, loving the new Lukas. Just as Kate predicted, Elian became better each day and so did I. We spent a few more weeks in the hospital with Lukas not leaving me for even a second. After what seemed like forever, Elian and I were finally discharged from the hospital. I walked out, Elian fast asleep in the carrier. I was surprised to see Kate waiting for me and not Lukas. “Where's Lukas?” “He said he had somewhere to be. Come on, get in." Kate's hair was a bit messy. She looked visibly tired with faint eyebags underneath her eyes. She looked like she hadn't gotten a proper sleep for days. “Are you okay?” I asked when she started the car. “Me? Why?” “You look very tired.” “I worked several night shifts. Don't worry. I'll be fine with a good night's rest. Then after that, when you are all healed, we can go have fun as much as we like.” “We?” I asked. I wasn't sure I understood what her definition of fun was. She drove me to the pack house. I had a bright smile on my face as I took in the familiar scent of home. However, that excitement died down when I heard two maids gossiping about me around the corner. Kate was about to confront them, but I stopped her with a shake of my head. “Ever since Luna Mia's arrival, it has been one thing after the other. Our once peaceful packhouse is not so peaceful anymore. First, it was a rogue, then she went missing, and next she was rushed to the hospital. Does she attract bad luck or what?” I swallowed the lump that formed in my throat, gritting my teeth as I tried to control my emotions.
