Chapter 9

Mia: I slowly opened my eyes and shut them right back when the glaring light from outside streamed in, almost blinding my groggy eyes. I adjusted to the light and that was when I realized there was someone before me, his long arms wrapped around me, his chest in my face. I didn't think he was truly going to come. I had no idea when he entered. I must have slept off. I looked up at his flawless, beautifully sculpted face. I could not get tired of looking at it. I ran my thumb over the smoothness of his well-shaped brows. Damn! He was perfect. The loud ring of his phone made me pull back hurriedly. He woke up, his eyes on me. “Good morning” “Good morning. You should answer your phone,” I said, his unwavering stare made me squirm uncomfortably. He grabbed the phone and answered it. He hung up a few seconds later without a word to the person on the other end. He came out of the shower and got dressed. “Something came up. I have to go” “When is the ball starting?” “This evening. Are you coming?” “Of course. I have to be there as the Luna." “If you are not strong enough, you don't have to. But if you insist, I'll have your dress delivered to you” Was he worried about me? “Okay” There was only thirty minutes left till the start of the ball and I had still not gotten the dress. I looked through the closet and none of it was appropriate for a ball. I sighed in aggravation as I looked through the closet for the fifth time. It was my first appearance as the new Luna of the pack and I couldn't come out in just anything. A knock had me rushing to the door as I opened it, hoping it was Lukas. But it wasn't. “Ta-da,” Kate flashed a box in my face. She pushed the door open and walked in. “You don't look that happy to see me,” she said, placing the box on the bed. “I am. I just didn't think you'd be the one to deliver it.” “Lukas sought out my help this morning. A rare occurrence, I must say. He had never gotten a dress for anyone before, not even for that b***h, Rina." She realized her slip up, but I decided not to pursue it further. However, the mention of her soured my mood. To make up for her mistake, she held the dress up, a huge smile on her face. It was a pastel blue gown with a deep V neckline adorned with pink and green flowers and a voluminous tulle skirt that stretched out into a small train. It was simple, yet stunning. “You like it?” I nodded. “Let's get you dressed first, then we'll take care of that hair.” I sat in front of the vanity, letting Kate work on my hair, wondering if she would do a good job. “Done!” She said, looking at me through the mirror. I could not hold back a gasp. Each section of my hair was made into soft spirals that drew high to form a bun. Tendrils of hair curled down my temple, perfectly framing my face. I marveled at her meticulous work. “Do you like it?” “I love it! I didn't know you could do this.” She smiled proudly. “There are many things I'm capable of. This is just one of my many talents” she boasted. “Too bad I wasn't present for your wedding. I would have made you the prettiest bride ever.” “It's beautiful” “I'm glad you do. Now get up, your Alpha Lukas is waiting.” I turned to look at her, searching for the hint of a joke. “He is?” She nodded. I took a deep breath in and exhaled, pushing the door open. I headed towards the stairs and there he was, looking up at me at the foot of the stairs. The ordinary three-piece suit he wore didn't look so ordinary on him. I slowly made my way down the stairs, secretly relishing the dazed look on his face. “You look stunning” I didn't think he was actually going to compliment me out loud. “You look amazing too.” He smiled and offered me his arm. The hall used was right beside the large pack house, so I didn't have to walk a long distance. “Are you ready?” he asked me, standing before the door. I was a nervous wreck. My hands had become cold and clammy. Lukas waited silently. I nodded at him, telling him I was ready. He pushed the door open and stepped into the hall filled with suits and gowns. I grabbed his arm tighter as we navigated through the crowd that fixed their gazes on us. To avoid their curious, prying eyes, I looked around the huge hall. A large chandelier hung from the vaulted ceiling, casting a warm glow across the room. The high cocktail tables were arranged in an orderly manner as the guests stood around them, cocktail glasses in their hand. A few of the men who I assumed were leaders in their respective packs, approached us with smiles on their faces. “I've heard so much about you. It's a pleasure to finally meet you,” one of them said, and his face turned to me. “I assume this is your wife. She's so beautiful. I'm sure you will make beautiful pups”. He said, glancing at my belly. I forced a smile and searched through the crowd looking for a familiar face, then I saw Kate. I whispered to Lukas to let me go and he agreed. “Couldn't handle the conversation?” Kate asked playfully, when I appeared beside her. “I'm not used to this just yet.” I was about to grab a cocktail from the waiter when Kate grabbed my hand, stopping me. “You can't drink. Did you forget that?” “Right” My eyes caught a gigantic cake in the buffet section and for the first time in months, I craved something. I salivated and swallowed so hard that Kate noticed. She trailed my line of vision. “Want some?” I nodded. She told me to wait and returned minutes later with a big slice. I closed my eyes and savored the taste before wolfing it down till I was full. I felt something's steady eyes on me. I turned and looked around, my eyes met a pair of hazel ones. “Who's that man?” I asked Kate, gesturing at the tall blond man who refused to look away. “Oh, him? That's Ethan. He's the Alpha of Raven claw pack. A notorious tyrant and a well-known douchebag who chases anything in a skirt” she wiped the cream off my lips with her thumb. “If you come across him, avoid him like the plague” “You think he's going to hit on a pregnant lady?” “He has been in a silent competition with Lukas for years. He would do anything to have what he has. Not only that. He's dangerous too. I heard his pack practices black magic." “Black magic? Isn't that forbidden?” Kate shook her head. “Only in some packs. Ours, for example. Witches are not allowed and are to be eliminated on sight. It's the rule here and some other packs." It was the same in the nightshade pack, and it made me wonder if witches were truly evil. “I'm going to step out for a while,” I whispered. “Should I come with you?” I shook my head. “I'll be back soon.” I sat on a chair in the hallway, softly massaging my legs that were starting to feel sore from standing for too long. “Do you need some help?” I jerked up at the sudden voice, startled. It was the creepy guy who was staring at me earlier. Did he follow me?
