Mia:
When we returned, Kate had become totally drunk. She must have drunk a lot while we were away.
She lifted her groggy eyes to us, trying her best to focus.
She blinked and pointed one finger at us.
“Why are you both returning together? And you……” she directed the finger at me, slurring her words. “You look like someone that has just got bent over.”
My face turned beet red.
“That's enough. You're drunk,” Michael cautioned.
“I'm not!” She turned to me again. “I would like to showcase one of my talents to Mia.” Lukas and Michael both cursed under their breaths, like they knew what she was about to do.
She stood up and wobbled on her feet. Michael hurried to hold her steady, but she yanked his arm off.
She headed to a pole that stood at the corner of the room.
Was she about to pole dance?
She raised one leg and wrapped it around the pole, throwing her head back as she spun multiple times.
She climbed the pole, lifting her body off the ground and supported her weight with her legs in a head-down position. Her long hazel hair came loose and brushed the floor.
She was really good at this.
I sat down and happened to glance in Michael's direction.
His gaze was completely locked on Kate.
I narrowed my eyes at him, c*****g my head.
There was something in his eyes. Desire? Love?
Were the two of them a thing?
Kate ended her performance with a bow that was so deep that she almost fell over.
I caught her just in time and guided her to her seat.
She tried to grab a glass of whiskey, but I pushed it out of her reach.
“She needs to go home,” I said.
“I'll take her”
He left the nightclub with her in his arms, trying to pull his face close to hers.
The sharp scent of sandalwood and cinnamon filled my nostrils.
I looked around the nightclub, unable to shake off the feeling that someone was staring at me. A feeling I had gotten since I stepped in.
However, there was no one. Everybody in sight went about their business.
Lukas covered me with his jacket and we left.
Elian was asleep when we returned.
“Alpha Lukas. Luna Mia," Kate's mum dipped her head at both of us in greeting. I thanked her and let her go.
“You’ve been acting weird” I asked as soon as we entered the room. I could tell something was wrong back in the club.
“It's nothing,” he replied indifferently.
“You aren't going to tell me what's wrong?” I asked, crossing my arms over my chest.
He sighed and turned to me. “You heard what Michael said. There's a witch here in our pack. The seer believes she's here. In the pack house. Masquerading as one of us."
“What!”
“He'll come to the pack house to find out who it is?”
“When?”
He shook his head.
“I haven't given a date yet.”
“What happens when the witch is caught?”
“She'll be killed.”
I swallowed as my insides churned.
Finally, It was the day of the seer's visit. He stepped into the grand foyer, his hawk-like eyes looking around and finally settling on me. I stood at the top of the stairs. A chill ran down my spine and my heart raced against my chest as our eyes met.
He bowed slightly, and a maid led him to a small room.
Lukas appeared beside me.
“What is he going to do now?” I asked, trying as much as I could to steady my voice. I didn't know why I was nervous but something about the whole situation made me nervous.
“He'll probably meet all the females in the pack house one by one.”
“I guess that includes me.”
Lukas' lips pressed in a thin line. He placed his hand over my shoulders and squeezed them gently.
“It's not you they're looking for. You have nothing to be worried about."
I waited and watched as the maids came out of the room one by one, looking pale and white as sheets.
I was called in.
A single chair stood at the center of the room. The seer stood beside it, his long wrinkly fingers tapping the wooden backrest rhythmically, a cup in his other hand.
“Have a seat”
My legs felt heavy as I trudged towards him.
I tried not to look nervous, but my palms were clammy, and my heart was beating so loud that I feared he might hear it.
“Drink this”
He handed me the cup that contained an unrecognizable, black liquid.
I brought it close to my lips and swallowed it.
I grimaced as it traveled down my throat.
It smelled just as terrible as it tasted.
He extended his right hand and placed it over my forehead.
At first, I felt nothing. Then suddenly, jolts of pain shot through me.
I screamed, but my voice caught in my throat. No matter how much I tried to yell, I could not make a sound.
My lungs fought for air, my body frozen.
Darkness clouded my vision. Several whispers echoed in my mind, clawing at my ears. I could hardly understand a word. My whole body trembled.
Then it was over.
I gasped for breath, collapsing forward as I clutched my chest.
The seer took a step back and studied me for a moment, his expression unreadable.
“You can leave.”
I stood to my feet, walking unsteadily to the door where Lukas was waiting.
His eyes flashed with fury when he saw how pale I was. He caught me when I staggered forward.
“What did he do to you?’
I shook my head, feeling dizzy, unable to say a word.
His aura turned dark. His jaw tightened and so did his grip on me.
The door opened, and the seer stepped out.
“What did you do to her?”
“I only followed the right procedure. Forgive me if I had hurt you, Luna.”
“Did you find out who the witch is?” Lukas asked.
The seer's gaze lingered on me for a few seconds.
“No. Alpha Lukas. I checked all of them and none of them was one. It seems my vision was wrong,” he bowed deeply in apology.
“So it was a false alarm? I ought to put you in jail for this but I
'll forgive you just this once.”
“Thank you, Alpha.” He bowed again and turned to leave but not before casting another mysterious glance at me.
