Chapter 19

939 Words
Mia: For the next few days, neither Lukas nor I talked to each other. He would come to check on Lukas every morning without so much as a hello. Then one morning, he didn't come. I was breastfeeding Elian when Kate came in, looking around the room. “What the hell happened? The maids told me you sleep here now. Did you have a fight with Lukas?” “We had a little misunderstanding” “Is this about what I told him? I only did that because I was worried about you.” “I know. I'm not blaming you. Look, I know you might not believe me, but I saw that wolf again at the pack house, but before I could show Lukas he was gone. Then he got angry and ordered me to stay away from the forest, calling me a witless blockhead.” “How could he? Did he apologize before leaving?” “No, he……wait, he left? Where did he go?” “He went on a business trip in the city. I heard there was an emergency in one of his companies. You didn't know?” I shook my head. I understood we were not exactly on good terms, but how could he not tell me about his trip? Not even a text? “Lukas is really something.” “How long is the trip?” “He didn't say” “Did he go alone? Who will take care of the pack?” “He put Michael in charge till he comes back.” I knew Michael was capable and reliable, but Lukas' sudden departure left a bitter taste in my mouth. It was as if Kate read my mind. "Don't worry. He'll be back soon and you both can sort out your issues.” There was a gentle knock on the door and then Micheal stepped in, a friendly smile on his face. His eyes shifted to Elian, who was fast asleep in my arms. “Morning Mia, Kate,” Michael greeted softly. “Morning, Michael,” I replied with a smile of my own. Just like Lukas, he had a face that ladies would easily fall for with dark tousled hair and a tall, imposing build. He looked so gentle and soft, like he would never break a heart but who would have thought…… I glanced at Kate. She had ignored him completely, her eyes on her polished nails, suddenly finding it fascinating. “I came to check on you…and Elian” I was about to speak when Kate interrupted, her voice as sharp as a knife. “Like you f*****g care,” she snickered. Michael pursed his lips. “Well, somebody's cranky” “Somebody needs to shut up and get the hell out of here,” she said and looked up at him. “Stop pretending. You haven't changed at all. You're still that same old ugly, selfish bastard who only cares about himself. “I could say the same about you.” My eyes darted between both of them, contemplating whether to step in or not. Michael's rejection must have left her with a permanent scar, which explains why her defenses were always up against him. Her jaw ticked. “I don't have enough middle fingers to let you know how I feel.” “The feeling is mutual,” he replied calmly, leaving Kate seething. He turned to me. “I'm about to head out, is there anything you need?” “No, thank you.” He nodded and left. Kate's chest heaved. Clearly, she was furious. “Just say your mind,” she said when she caught me staring. “I think you should stop baiting him.” “You think I'm baiting him?” I shrugged. “It's obvious.” She sighed and went to stand by the window. “You know, when I returned to the pack, I thought it wouldn't matter anymore. We have been apart for so long. I hooked up and dated a lot of guys, and I'm sure he did the same. You know how he does with women. He flashes that stupid smile of his and everyone forgets about the s**t he has done. My point is, I was wrong. Every time I see him, I'm reminded of his rejection, and it f*****g hurts.” “You might need closure. You should probably talk to him. Perhaps he had a good reason." “I'm not interested in starting that conversation with him,” she exhaled, looking outside. “Great. Now my morning is officially ruined. See you later, Mia” She gave a tight smile and walked out. I looked down to see Elian staring at me, his tiny hands curled into fists and a small smile on his lips. It reminded me of Lukas and though I didn't want to admit it, I missed him. I stared at my phone, desperately hoping he would call, but it was futile. I returned Elian to his crib and was about to leave when my phone rang. I quickly picked it up, but it was not who I hoped it would be. It was an unknown number. “Who is this?” “It's Rina. I'm sure you recognize that name.” Rina? Wasn't that Lukas' girlfriend? “What do you want?” “I want you to leave Lukas alone” “Excuse me?” “You think he belongs to you now because you have a child for him? He still loves me and I'm going to prove that to you” she said and ended the call.
