“Do you understand what you're saying?” Adrian's brow etched into a frown.
“I'm a hundred percent certain.” Helena confirmed her words.
If there's one thing Elena enjoyed doing, it was reading. Ever since she was little, she read about anything and everything.
She remembered reading a book about rare poisonous plants deep in the sss but she didn't exactly expect that reading such a book would come in handy one day.
“If you don't believe me, you're free to do your research. But I would advise you that you get this out of your home first.”
Helena warned.
“Thank goodness you haven't been in constant contact with the flowers. If you had been taking care of them, wetting them or touching them, you would have been long gone.”
One of the reasons the poison hadn't been activated much was probably because Adrian hadn't touched the flowers since he got them. Constant touch with water would have vehemently triggered the poison in the flowers. But since Adrian had just abandoned them in his living room, it meant he didn't care for the flowers but probably kept them to save face, especially since it was a gift.
“Who gave them to you?”
Adrian didn't answer her question, but his expression had darkened deeply. Whoever gave them to him must have been someone important.
“Ian, get rid of the flowers. Confirm her words.”
The young man quickly carried out Adrian's order. He carried both pots with both hands and walked out of the house.
“I'll drop you off at home,” Adrian spoke up after a few minutes of silence before also making his way out of the house. Helena followed after him quickly.
He was angry. Very very angry. And she could see that.
He didn't say a word as he drove out of the estate.
“It seems your brother's not the only person trying to kill you. But whoever it is, it's either someone also gave them the flowers on purpose or they got it with the intention of killing you. Either way, I'd advise you not confront them first without making proper investigation.”
Adrian did not utter a word.
“Suit yourself,” Helena muttered under her breath.
“I'll drop here,” Helena told Adrian who had now reduced the speed of the car.
“I guess this is where we'll have to say our goodbyes.” Helena said as she got down from the car.
“Mhm,” Adrian responded absentmindedly.
Seeing he was still angry from the flower incident and wouldn't talk to her, Helana closed the door.
Not even a second later, Adrian drove away without a word.
**********
By the time Helena got home, it was almost evening. The traffic on her way home was terrible and her stomach was starting to rumble again.
The house was dark, musty and freaking hot. A big contrast to Adrian's luxurious home.
Sigh. Welcome back to reality girl. She chuckled sadly.
She needed to pay her bills first and get something to eat, then she would know what to do next with her trashy life.
Helena grabbed her backpack and locked the door to go find the landlord who lived a storey just above hers.
The journey was quite short and thank goodness he wasn't such a dramatic person. With the money Adrian gave her, she was able to pay all her outstanding bills plus six months of rent in advance.
Mr Smith kept throwing her suspicious glances as he counted the money, and he'd even asked her where she got so much cash from, but Helena just smiled and said nothing.
After settling her bills, Helena happily went to the grocery store. She even ordered Uber. Something she would normally never do. But since Adrian had been generous to her, of course, she had to be generous to herself.
By the time Helena got back home, it was already past six. She was still basking in Adrian's money and had ordered an Uber back as well.
Helena was about to get down from the car when she noticed multiple shadows around her door step.
Shit!
“Driver, please go go go go!” Helena urged the Uber driver to drive away as quickly as possible.
She buried her head in the back seat, trying to avoid anyone seeing her in the car.
She had just escaped being caught by those monsters. She breathed a sign of relief as the driver continued to drive further away.
She had a feeling that the loan sharks would definitely look for her; the landlord would have definitely told on her.
It wasn't like she didn't have the money to pay them, it was just that if they saw the groceries with her, they would definitely seize it, and this was a whole month worth of groceries.
Helena could not do away with that much food.
Her only other option was to go to her best friend's place, and outwait the loan sharks. She'll probably just return home around 4am when everyone's still asleep. Then she would go to their office later in the day to pay this month's repayment.
“Thank you sir,” Helena showed her gratitude by paying the Uber driver extra for his trouble.
She grabbed the heavy bag of groceries and plopped them on the floor in front of Avery’s door.
She knocked.
A few minutes later, a tall and slim woman in her thirties opened the door.
“Hi Avery, can I crash here tonight?”
Helena quickly put her hands together in a pleading sign.
“I promise I'll be out of your hair, latest four AM, Plus, I brought food,”
Normally, Avery would be happy to invite her in, so Helena immediately noticed the awkward look on Avery’s face and the fact that she was blocking the door with her body.
“My boyfriend’s here, can we do this another day?” Average chuckled awkwardly.
“Oh,” Helena wanted to agree before suddenly remembering that she had nowhere else to go.
“Please, I have nowhere else to go. I promise I'll be quiet, you won't even notice I'm here.”
“Common Helena, this is a freaking one room apartment. Please, not today,” Avery tried to close the door on Helena, but she was fast enough to place her palm against the door to stop it from closing.
“Just for tonight please,” Helena insisted.
“No can do,” Avery put more force into closing the door.
This time, Helena was sure that no matter how much she begged, Avery won't let her in.
“Fine, fine, can I at least keep this here, I'll come get it tomorrow morning,” Helena continued to push hard against the door because she knew if Avery closed it, she probably wouldn't open it again.
Avery glanced at the bag of groceries on the floor.
“Please, help me freeze the beef too,” she replied cheekily.
“Fine, but leave first.” Avery did not trust that Helena would not try to barge in.
“Okay,” Helena raised both hands in surrender.
“Go away,” Avery urged. It seems she would not bring in the groceries until Helena left.
Helena huffed in frustration before walking away.
“Love you too,” Avery shouted from a distance. Helena gave her the F sign without turning back.
After walking a few blocks, she stopped to catch her breath. She really meant it when she said she had nowhere else to go.
Where was she supposed to pass the night? On the street?
Suddenly, she wished she was back in the visitor's room in
Adrian's home but that was not happening anytime soon.
Sigh.
The night was just starting and she was doomed for the night.
