Chapter 18 - Denver Company

The day started and Joffiel waited for Marisson’s return. She waited with Sheena in her room. As time passed by, Marisson came.

“So, you already have a job at Azazel Company but you still wanted the job that I told you about?” Marisson asked.

“Yes, if it is possible?” Joffiel said, still hoping.

For Joffiel, it is not being greedy. She just want to have two jobs to support her daily needs, as well as her tasks. She needs to save just in case there are circumstances that will use large amount of money.

“Of course, it’s alright. You wanted to apply today right? I already messaged our human resource team and they are available today so you could meet them after lunch,” Marisson said.

“Thank you very much, Marisson,” Joffiel said.

“It’s fine. But Azazel company, huh? Well, I can’t stop you now since you’re already hired,” Marisson said.

“Why? Is there something wrong with that company?” Joffiel asked.

Marisson was silent for a bit but afterwards she said, “Well, it’s very complicated. You don’t have to know, but remember this. Be careful at that company, especially to the boss of that company.”

After hearing that from Marisson, she felt that Fenril is really suspicious. However, she is not in the right place to judge someone she just met for a couple of days.

“I don’t quite understand, but I’ll be careful,” Joffiel said.

“Then it’s okay, I know you’ll be fine anyway. So about the job at the coffee shop, I have the words to them so hiring you would be easy unless something unexpected will happen,” Marisson said.

“Again, thank you so much,” Joffiel said to Marisson.

At the time after lunch, Joffiel decided to come early for the interview. The place is also near her place so she just spends time walking so she can observe the surroundings.

As she walks by, her bracelet gives a faint light again. She wanders around so she could find where the person in her task is. However, even after spending a few minutes, she couldn’t find the person, so she just proceeded to go to her interview.

As she came to the interview, the interviewer was amazed at her beauty.

“Well, Marisson didn’t lie when she said that an angel will come here to apply for a position. You’re really a beautiful young lady,” the interviewer said.

She just smiled just for a reaction because, she remembered that Fenril was shocked that she did not bother to react.

“Thanks for the compliment,” Joffiel said.

“So, first, we will have a written examination before the actual interview. Both the examination and the interview have separate points so don’t worry if you think you didn’t do well in one of those two,” the interviewer said.

They are formal when it comes to the interview. It is really different from my first interview at the Azazel Company. She had no choice since she also wanted to get this job.

“Okay, I’ll keep that in mind,” Joffiel answered.

“So, I’ll give you an hour for the examination. Use your time wisely,” the interviewer said.

Joffiel begins her exam.

I didn’t study for this exam, Marisson should have told me about this. I’m confused why she didn’t say it. Joffiel thought to herself.

Joffiel opens her exam paper. She was surprised about the questions that the exam has. One of the questions wrote, You’re in a trolly and the breaks fail, along the track are five people, if you will not do anything, the five people will be run over, however, you have the option to switch lane wherein there’s only one person that will be run over by the trolley, what will you do.

It’s a philosophical question, how does it relate to the work I’m applying for? Joffiel asked herself.

Joffiel just answered all the questions wholeheartedly. It was hard for her since she really needed to write all her answers.

As the time came, the interviewer returned. He said, “The time is up. Let me have your paper and we can proceed to the interview.”

Joffiel holds out her exam paper and waits for the interview.

Those questions do not have the correct answer but it determines the psychological thinking of a person. The question is, why do they have to make a question like that?

“So, let’s have the interview. So first question, why do you think we have that kind of exam?” the interviewer asked.

“I think those are for understanding how we think and how we approach things,” Joffiel answered.

“Correct, we have many sets of questions so it doesn’t matter if someone told you about this already. Did Marisson tell you about this?” the interviewer asked.

“No, she just said that I could do it,” Joffiel answered.

‘Of course, of course. It’s Marisson afterall. So you didn’t know that if you failed your application, you could never apply again in any of our branches?” the interviewer asked.

“No, I didn’t know about that,” Joffiel answered.

Every questions that the interviewer asks, she will answer it straight to the point.

“Now you know. So let’s proceed to the next question. Do you have the ability to coordinate with many people?” the interviewer continued.

“I have those abilities, actually this year is the only time that I could talk with a lot of people. However, I know that I could coordinate a lot of people,” Joffiel answered.

The interviewer nodded. He continued, “Do you think that demons exist?” the interviewer asked.

Joffiel was surprised at the question that the interviewer asked. She replied, “Yes, I think they exist.”

“Can you expound on that thought?” the interviewer said.

“Well, I think that demons are different from human beings. There are extremely bad human beings but they should not be compared to demons. I think demons lurked around the earth pretending to be human. This is just my opinion but that’s what I believed right after I have my consciousness when I’m still a child,” Joffiel answered.

“That’s really specific. Okay, I have the general idea on what you are thinking about that. Next question. Coffee or tea?” the interviewer asked.

“Uhm,” Joffiel stuttered.

“I’m just kidding, those are not included in the question. I just want to change the atmosphere of the interview. So final question, would you be involved if the company has some serious problem? For example, if the government wants to shut down every coffee shop in the country,” the interviewer asked.

Joffiel looks at the interviewer, she’s waiting for the interviewer, that it’s also a joke but the interviewer has serious eyes, so Joffiel decided to answer.

“It depends, if the problem is like what your example is, I would be involved. Not only for me, but for the company I’m working with. I’m the type of person that considers everyone's friend and every workmate as family, and if we’re talking about a workmate, I think the company is our home so being involved makes a lot of sense for me,” Joffiel answered.

“I see. Then here’s really the final question. Do you accept the job with all your heart?” the interviewer asked.

“Yes,” Joffiel answered.

“Then you’re hired. Welcome to the Denver Company. I believed Marisson said that you need at least 3 hours for the interview but we only used an hour and a half,” the interviewer said.

“Yes, I believed she said that, then the remaining time is for me to be introduced to the company?” Joffiel asked.

“Exactly, since you’re Marisson’s recommendation, we are sure that you fit perfectly for the job. I’ll guide you around the company,” the interviewer said.

Joffiel followed the interviewer.

“By the way, I’m William. Nice to meet you,” the interviewer said.

“Ohh, nice meeting you, Sir William,” Joffiel said.

“Actually, you just need to go here in the company occasionally. Only during the meeting with our boss,” William said.

“So I’ll be staying at a branch of where I’m the manager in a coffee shop here in the city,” Joffiel said.

“Yes, the coffee shop is just near here. So if your place is near our company, then the coffee shop is also near your place,” William said.

William introduced Joffiel to everyone.

“Sorry, our boss is currently busy right now so you should meet him sometime in the future. For the time being, I will escort you to the place. The coffee shop is not yet open but the staff are already there making rounds. We’re just waiting for you to take up the job so we will have a soft opening next week,” William said.

Joffiel agreed.They took a long walk to the coffee shop.

As they reached the coffee shop, both of them entered.

“Everyone! Your new manager is here, please introduce yourselves,” William shouted.

This is very familiar. Joffiel thought to herself.

Six people gathered in front of them. As to Joffiel's expectation, the people in the coffee shop were also astonished with her look and her age.

The six employees introduced themselves.

As they finish introducing themselves, William leaves her in the coffee shop and gets back to their company building.

Joffiel left with her subordinate. She asked one of them to guide her in the vicinity. She asked, “You’re Adam, right? Would you kindly give me details about our shop?”

“That’s alright, Ma’am Joffiel. So first, for this shop, it was built not long ago, maybe two weeks ago. We’re already ready for opening but the manager that will supposedly handle us was fired by the higher ups, so they needed to hire someone to replace that manager and here we are now,” Adam answered.

Joffiel nodded. She said, “I’m not familiar with how popular this coffee shop is, could you tell me more about the shop itself.”

Adam scratches his head. He said, “I don’t know how to start that. Ma'am, are you not familiar with Denver Coffee Shop?”

“No, actually this is my first time in this place,” Joffiel answered.

Adam was shocked since the Denver Coffee Shop is known nationwide and has the highest gross income when it comes to coffee shops.

“Actually, this Denver Coffee Shop is the most popular coffee shop in the country and extends its branch worldwide. We are visited by many people because of the best taste of both hot and cold coffee available in our shop,” Adam replied.

“Okay, any other details?” Joffiel asked.

“Well, our coffee here is expensive but tastes more than enough of what the customer paid for,” Adam answered.

“Then let me taste one of your brewed coffee here,” Joffiel said.

“Okay, I’ll try my best so that you would taste the best kind of coffee there is,” Adam said.

Adam brewed the coffee that’s in the recommendation. Joffiel tasted the coffee and she was amazed at its taste.

“I see, no wonder that this place has become popular. Maybe I could learn how to brew coffee and maybe improve this,” Joffiel said.

“You don’t have to do that, Ma’am. We are the one responsible for doing the physical work stuff and you should just observe and manage us,” Adam said.

“I don’t think that’s a befitting job for a manager, I should learn all of the things that the people under me do. Tell me more about what you do here as an employee,” Joffiel said.

The other employees also come close to Adam and Joffiel to help them with things that Joffiel wanted to see.

From mopping the floor to baking cakes, Joffiel tried to learn how her underlings do things so she could help in the future.

“So, the opening time of this coffee shop is from 3PM to 11PM?” Joffiel asked.

“That’s what was previously decided but it may be changed if you wanted it to be changed, but that’s the most effective time on opening a coffee shop so I don’t think that you would change it,” Adam replied.

“I see. Is there anything that we needed to do before the soft opening?” Joffiel asked.

“The higher-ups are still deciding about the new item in the menu, I think it will be mentioned during your meeting with the higher-ups, Ma’am Joffiel,” Adam answered.

“Still, I wanted to know what would be needed so I could participate in discussion during the meeting. Fill me up with details about that menu,” Joffiel replied.

“Okay, Ma’am. Every time one branch of the Denver Coffee Shop is opened, one item is added in the regular menu, meaning, every branch of this shop have one different items for others, if that item becomes popular, then it will be added as in the regular menu in the other shop,” Adam said.

“I see, is this thing really important?” Joffiel asked.

“Yes, it is, Ma’am. Every person that knows that a branch will open, patiently waits to taste test the new menu. The critique that people made on the menu is very harsh so the company is really doing their best to find good food,” Adam answered.

“So how will the higher ups decide on which item to add?” Joffiel asked.

“There’s a cooking show off every once in a while in the company, it was already finished a month ago but they are not satisfied with the winner’s food, so there’s a panic within the company,” Adam replied.

That’s why Marisson has been very busy these past few days. Joffiel thought to herself.

“So the thing is, can anyone still challenge the food that is supposed to be added to the menu?” Joffiel asked.

“Yes, Ma’am. But even with twenty challenges, they could not still find something good that could make the people praise the food,” Adam said.

“So meaning, I could present my own food and try if the higher ups would approve?” Joffiel asked.

“Yes, but you’re one of the higher ups so I don’t know what will be the process if you decide to do something like that,” Adam replied.

“Okay, that’s all I wanted to know. I could ask Marisson but I know she’s busy so I wanted to know as many details as possible,” Joffiel said.

“You knew Ma’am Marisson?” Adam asked.

“Yes, she’s just my neighbor and she’s the one that helped me get this position,” Joffiel said.

“Ohh, then I completely believed that you would be one of the best managers I ever worked for. Ma’am Marisson is a very good person both personally and professionally. I look forward to working for you,” Adam said.

“Working with me, you don’t need to work for me, work for our customers,” Joffiel said.

“I’m sorry, I’ll work for customer’s happiness, thank you, Ma’am Joffiel,” Adam said.

“You’re welcome, Adam,” Joffiel said.

Joffiel went home after learning many things in the coffee shop.
