CHAPTER 1 The Collision
Maya Bennett hated being late. But life didn’t care. Life shoved, pulled, and dragged her down, and still demanded she run faster. The bus hissed and pulled away, leaving her coughing in the exhaust. She stood at the curb, clutching the cheap strap of her bag like it was the only thing holding her together. Rent overdue. Her boss is ready to fire her if she shows up late again. Ethan’s school is threatening to suspend him over fees. Her chest ached, but she forced her legs to move. One more block. Just one. She didn’t notice him at first. Just a tall figure walking against the flow of the street. Black hoodie. Dark jeans. Too calm for the chaos of downtown. People moved around him, like the tide breaking for a rock. Maya barreled straight into him. Her bag flew. Papers scattered. She stumbled back, almost hitting the pavement. His hand shot out, strong fingers circling her wrist, pulling her upright before she could fall. “Watch it,” Maya snapped, breathless, snatching her arm free. His eyes met hers. Dark. Sharp. A quiet storm that said nothing yet carried everything. “You weren’t looking,” he said, voice low. Calm. Steady. Too steady. Her lips parted in shock. Who talks like that? He wasn’t mad, not really. Just… sure. As if she were the one at fault and he had already decided. Maya crouched, gathering her papers before the wind carried them away. She stuffed them back into her bag and stood, jaw tight. “Next time, move,” she said. Then she turned. She had no time for strangers with piercing eyes. But the stranger didn’t move either. His gaze followed her, lingering like heat against her skin. She hated that it made her shiver. She walked faster. Didn’t look back. --- The office door slammed as she rushed inside. Her boss glared at the clock. Maya forced a smile, muttered an apology, and slid behind her desk. Her chest was still tight from running. But worse, she couldn’t shake the look in that stranger’s eyes. It had been a second. Less. Yet it stuck, like a splinter. She shoved the thought away. Work first. Survival first. Always. --- Damien Blackwood leaned against the brick wall outside, hands shoved in his hoodie pocket. He watched her disappear into the building, a faint smirk tugging at his lips. She was fire. Sharp tongue, sharper glare. Most people stumbled over their words when he spoke, trying to please him even when they didn’t know who he was. Not her. She hadn’t even looked twice. Interesting. Damien had been hiding in plain sight for weeks, testing how it felt to live without the weight of his name. No board meetings. No bodyguards. No fake smiles from women who only wanted his bank account. Just him. Alone. But then she slammed into him like a storm, and for the first time in months, he felt something other than boredom. --- By nightfall, Maya’s legs ached from the long shift. She dragged herself home, past the flickering streetlights, to the tiny apartment she shared with Ethan. The door creaked as she pushed it open. Her brother sat on the couch, hunched over, worry etched into his young face. “You’re late,” Ethan said. “I know,” Maya sighed, dropping her bag. She sat beside him and brushed a hand through his messy hair. “Did you eat?” “Yeah.” He hesitated. “Maya… some guys came by again. Asking about Dad’s debt.” Her chest tightened. She bit back the curse that wanted to escape. Their father’s shadow followed them like a curse, debt collectors circling like vultures. “What did you say?” “Nothing. I just shut the door.” Good. Smart. But fear twisted in her stomach. “We’ll be fine,” she said, though the words tasted like lies. “I’ll handle it.” --- She didn’t sleep. Every noise in the street made her flinch. By morning, her body ached from tension. Still, she went to work. She always went to work. The day dragged on. Her boss piled up extra work on her, snapping at every mistake. By the time the sun set, she felt like her bones would collapse. And that’s when it happened. She cut through an alley, her shortcut home. Her bag was clutched tight. Head low. She thought it would be quick. Safe enough. But shadows moved. Three men stepped out, blocking the exit. “Well, well,” one said with a grin that made her skin crawl. “Little Bennett girl. Heard you’ve been dodging.” Her stomach dropped. Her father’s debt. Again. “I don’t have anything,” she said, voice steady though her hands shook inside her sleeves. “Wrong answer.” Another man stepped closer, his smile sharp. “You’ll pay. One way or another.” Her heart pounded. She backed up, but the wall pressed against her spine. The first man reached for her arm. And then—another voice. Low. Calm. Cold. “Let her go.” Maya’s eyes snapped up. The stranger. The man from the street. Damien. He stepped out of the shadows, hands still in his hoodie pocket, eyes locked on the men. His presence filled the alley, quiet but heavy. The men laughed. “Who’s this? Your boyfriend?” Damien didn’t flinch. Didn’t even blink. “One chance,” he said softly. “Walk away.” The men sneered. The closest lunged at him. It was over in seconds. Damien moved fast—too fast. One twist, one strike, and the man crumpled to the ground. The others froze, eyes wide. Maya’s breath caught. He wasn’t just strong. He was trained. Dangerous. The men scrambled, dragging their friend, muttering curses as they fled into the night. Silence fell. Damien turned, his gaze landing on her. Maya pressed back against the wall, chest heaving. “Are you hurt?” he asked. His voice was calm again. She shook her head. “Who the hell are you?” For a moment, something flickered in his eyes. A secret. A truth he wouldn’t share. “No one,” he said finally. Her pulse thundered. She didn’t believe him. And she hated that part of her that wanted to. Maya opened her mouth to demand more, but movement at the alley’s mouth froze her. A black car idled there. Windows tinted. Watching. The same car she’d seen twice this week near her apartment. Her blood turned cold. Damien’s head tilted, his eyes narrowing on the car. The door opened. And Maya realized this wasn’t random. This was bigger. Much bigger.
