CHAPTER 1- CURSED BY THE MOON
The moon was fat and silver that night, hanging above the forest like a watchful eye. Its light spilled through the small window of my bedroom, painting everything in ghostly white. Tonight should have been the most beautiful night of my life. At midnight, on my eighteenth birthday, the mate bond would awaken inside me. Every she-wolf dreamed of this moment. They whispered about it during training, giggled about it in the kitchens, prayed for it under the stars. It was supposed to be magical—the instant when the Moon Goddess revealed the one destined for you. A bond stronger than blood. Stronger than time. For me, it felt like a curse. I stood before the mirror, tugging nervously at the edge of my dress. My hands wouldn’t stop shaking. The pale blue fabric clung too tightly, showing every curve I wished I could hide. I didn’t look like the other girls, glowing with confidence and beauty. My hair—too wild. My eyes—too plain. My smile—too unsure. The dress had been a gift from my mother. She’d kissed my cheek quickly before disappearing downstairs to help with the feast. She hadn’t noticed how pale I’d gone. Or maybe she had, and simply chose not to dwell on it. My family loved me—but never the way they loved Daniel, my older brother. He was strong. Ambitious. The pride of the pack. And me? I was the shadow that trailed behind him. A knock at the door startled me. “Aria? You ready?” Daniel. Of course. I smoothed my dress, forcing my voice steady. “Almost.” When I opened the door, he looked me over with sharp, assessing eyes. Ever the Beta-in-training. Ever the protector. His brows drew together. “You should smile more. Tonight’s important. The whole pack will be there. Don’t embarrass me.” The words stung, though they shouldn’t have. Daniel wasn’t cruel—not exactly. But he had grown used to greatness, and I had grown used to being… less. “I’ll try,” I whispered. His expression softened for a heartbeat—just enough to remind me he still cared. Then he sighed and turned away. “Just… come on. They’re waiting.” The packhouse pulsed with life. Wolves filled the great hall, laughter and music echoing off wooden beams. Long tables overflowed with food—roast meats, fresh bread, honey-sweet cakes. Children darted between legs while warriors clapped each other on the back and raised mugs of ale. It should have felt like a celebration. Instead, the walls pressed in too tightly. As Daniel guided me through the crowd, I felt every stare. Whispers clung to me like burrs. “She looks nervous.” “Do you think she’ll be blessed with someone strong?” “Poor thing. Too quiet. No Alpha would ever—” Heat flooded my face. I lowered my gaze, wishing I could vanish into the floor. At the front of the hall, our Alpha stood tall. His presence alone was enough to command silence. Beside him, the Luna radiated warmth, though her eyes held a depth that always unnerved me—as if she saw straight through skin and bone to whatever secrets lay beneath. “Aria,” the Alpha said, his voice deep and certain. “The Goddess has a path for you tonight.” I bowed my head, afraid to meet his gaze too long. The Luna stepped forward, cradling a silver goblet. The liquid shimmered faintly beneath the torchlight—more than wine. Magic. A key to unlocking the mate bond inside me. “Drink, child,” she said gently. “Let the bond awaken.” My throat felt dry as sand. Still, I obeyed. The cup trembled in my hands as I lifted it to my lips. The taste was bitter. Metallic. Like smoke and iron. Fire surged through my chest—burning and freezing all at once—spreading through my veins until my wolf stirred restlessly beneath my skin. The room dimmed. Music faded. All I could hear was the frantic pounding of my own heart. Then— A scent. It hit me like a tidal wave. Rich. Sharp. Addictive. It wrapped around me, filled my lungs, crawled beneath my skin. My wolf howled with wild, aching joy. My mate. He was here. I turned, searching—until my gaze crashed into his. Ethan. Tall. Broad-shouldered. Storm-gray eyes that always seemed to see too much. Dark hair falling across his forehead. A jaw cut sharp as a blade. Memories flooded me. Training beside him in the summer heat. Stolen glances. Quiet longing buried deep where no one could touch it. I had wanted him for years. And now—the Goddess had given him to me. But Ethan’s face froze. His lips curled into something ugly. “No.” The single word struck like a blow. Silence rippled through the hall. “No,” he said again, louder this time. He stepped back as though I carried a disease. “It can’t be her. The Goddess must be wrong.” The bond inside me pulled tight—begging him to come closer—but he recoiled farther away. “I refuse,” he spat. Gasps echoed like thunder. Wolves didn’t refuse. The mate bond was sacred. Divine. To reject it was to spit in the face of the Moon Goddess herself. Pain ripped through me, raw and violent—like claws through my chest. My wolf whimpered, broken. “Ethan…” My voice cracked, barely more than a breath. “Please—” He didn’t soften. Didn’t falter. Didn’t care. “I won’t bind myself to someone so weak. A Beta’s sister? She’s nothing.” Laughter cut through me like knives. Whispers flared like wildfire. “She’s nothing?” “The Goddess cursed him with her?” “Pathetic.” The goblet slipped from my hand and shattered on the stone floor. Red liquid splashed across my dress—like blood. Daniel’s snarl shook the hall. “Enough, Ethan!” But it was too late. The pack had seen. The pack had heard. And I— I stood there, hollow, my world collapsing in on itself. Rejected. Publicly. Completely. Tonight was meant to mark the beginning of my destiny. Instead, it ended it. The Moon Goddess had not blessed me. She had cursed me. And although I didn’t know it yet… that curse would carry me far beyond these walls. Straight into the hands of the one wolf feared by all— The Alpha King.
