Arising early, wanting to get as many miles under her belt before dark as possible, Gwen tried to be very quiet so as not to awaken Rachel. She’d told enough lies already. Last night she’d emailed her boss about needing to take a sudden leave of absence due to a family emergency. Funny how none of Madison’s friends had contacted her, but then she’d cut most of them off in recent months, probably not wanting any more people than necessary to notice her changes in behavior, so Gwen was spared the need to cover for her. Anyway, Madison was not her problem anymore. She had enough to worry about. She wrote a short note for Rachel and left it by the coffee pot with some cash. She was going to miss her.
