Chapter 29Nicole Jesse’s face fell to the point that she appeared almost catatonic. Her knuckles were white where she gripped the chair and her whole body had gone tense as a coil, ready to spring if Nicole so much as touched her. She didn’t speak for so long that Nicole began to wonder if she ever would. She shifted in the chair, trying to get Jesse’s attention, yet Jesse’s face remained blank, her eyes staring right through Nicole. It was positively eerie, and Nicole was tempted to make a joke to break the spell, but if she redirected the conversation now, she might never get her answer. So she waited.
