Jesse bolted into an upright position, pulled the offending phone from under her pillow and killed her alarm. No way could it be time to get up already. But the digital clock of her screen proved her wrong.

She swung both legs out of bed, grimacing when her bare feet touched the somewhat grimy floor. One of these days she would have to clean in here. Too bad Nicole’s duties didn’t extend to—

Halfway out of bed already, she plunked back down onto the mattress. After her crying fit in the barn last night, she’d come back in with the resolve to square things with Nicole. So, instead of hiding in her room like she’d really wanted to, she’d confronted her. Well, sort of.
