She was saved by yet another woman who brought back her insurance card. By the time Jesse had explained that it was German and what the individual numbers meant, the nurse came back and once more took her and Nicole’s blood pressure and temperature. It was funny, really, how hers was lower than Nicole’s, and maybe later they would laugh about it, but for now her hand still hurt. The icepack the nurse handed her helped, though, and after they signed about a dozen papers each, they were released back out into what really was a beautiful afternoon. After the air-conditioned hospital, the parking lot felt balmy by comparison, and the sun on Jesse’s bare arms was pure bliss.
