Morgana's POV:
The doors were suddenly pushed open and I shut my eyes instinctively. I could hear approaching footsteps, but I continued to feign sleep.
“She is still asleep.” I heard a male voice say.
“What could be wrong with her?” A familiar female voice asked.
“She's pregnant.” The man replied, my eyes flung open when I heard his words.
‘How? When?’
It finally dawned on me, the night Marilyn's divorce was announced in the news and she had contacted Simon for emotional support. He came back home extremely happy and drunk, and that night we had s*x for the very first time.
The next morning when he woke up he hated me more, he claimed that I took advantage of his drunken state to have my way with him.
How did that one night together result in pregnancy?
‘Simon needs to know about this, he will come for me the moment he finds out that I am pregnant with his child.’ I thought.
“She is awake.” I heard a male voice announce. Tilting my head to the side, I saw a middle aged man, dressed in a white lab coat and the female police officer from earlier who had lent me her phone, standing before me.
“It's a good thing that you are awake.” The female officer said, then she turned to the doctor. “Are you done with the checkup?” She asked and he shook his head. “Okay then, get it done quickly. I need to get her back to the station as soon as possible, so let me know when you are done.” Taking a deep breath she added. “I will be waiting outside.” Then she turned to leave.
“Um, excuse me.” I called out for her and she turned around to face me. “How can I return to the cell in this condition? It's not safe to raise a child there.” I asked.
“That is not my problem young lady, you can get your lawyer to make an appeal to the court or whatever. And then your child can be adopted by it's father after birth.” She replied.
“Does that mean that I won't be set free, I haven't even been taken to court so why should all these decisions be made by you.” I retorted.
“Watch your tone.” She cautioned. “And this decision wasn't made by me. I just discovered that you won't be taken to court, because there is enough evidence and witnesses to keep you detained.” She revealed.
But…
Taking a deep breath I said. “Can you call my husband then, let him know that I am pregnant.”
“You can do that with the station's telephone when we get there. Stop causing a scene.”
“Just help me please.” I begged.
The doctor turned to her and said, “Just call him, Jane.”
“You shouldn't interfere with my work, Dad. I don't interfere with yours.” She grunted, as she pulled out her phone reluctantly and asked. “What's his number?”
‘Dad?’
“555-678-889-02.” I called out as she dialed in the number. Suddenly the phone began to ring. “This is Officer Jane.” I heard her say, as she stepped to a corner to make the call.
“Thank you.” I mouthed to the doctor and he nodded his head.
She returned after a few seconds, looking a bit strange. Clearing her throat she began. “He says that the child is not his, and….”
“But that's a lie!” I interjected. “It's his child I have in me.”
“He also said that even if the child is his, he wouldn't want to have anything to do with whatever comes out of a murderer.” She added, a bit nervous.
Simon rejected me once again, just like always. Once more, he chose Marilyn over me—and even over his own child.
“If your husband can't adopt the child then your family can, just contact them once we get back to the station.” She suggested.
But, my family was an even worse option. They never loved me and they will certainly not love my child. Who will care for him?
Was it my brother who hated and always bullied me my father that is unavailable, or my mother that only cares about her son.
“I want to opt for an abortion!” I announced.
………….
I returned to the cell a while ago, but I remained silent on my bed throughout the time. The doctor had advised me to rethink about my decision carefully, to be sure that I won't regret it. But what's the use, I will most certainly regret it if my child is adopted by my family. Besides, my husband didn't want me anymore.
I had no idea how long I stayed awake but I eventually cried myself to sleep.
The next morning, sounds of iron hitting against the cell bars woke me up. “What the f**k is wrong with these people?” I heard one of the inmates groan, irritated.
Opening my eyes, I saw a different female police officer standing in front of the cell. “You.” She began, pointing at me. “You have a visitor.” She announced.
“Who is it?” I asked, genuinely confused. I wasn't expecting anyone, maybe an attorney was finally assigned to me.
“He says that he is your husband.” She replied coldly.
Simon must have changed his mind, he wants me back. He wants our child back.
I thought as I followed the officer out of the cell, she led me into a narrow corridor then to a room where Simon was seated.
I sat opposite him, a metal table separating us. The officer cuffed my right leg to the chair and my hands to the table, saying, "Five minutes!" Before stepping back to stand in the corner.
“I knew it?” I began, sniffing back tears, a relieving smile curling up my lips. “I just knew that you hadn't given up on me. I knew that you would never abandon us.”
He lets out a deep sigh, squeezed his hands, then relaxed them before saying, “I don’t have time for all this, Morgana. Just sign this.” Then he tossed a brown envelope in front of me.
I picked up the envelope and started to open it. "What is this? Is it some kind of petition or something?" I asked, still struggling with the seal.
“Divorce papers!”
