CHAPTER 2: Too Close

1441 Words
Elena spent the rest of the afternoon pretending she wasn’t thinking about Leo. It should have been easy. She had classes, assignments, and a dozen things demanding her attention. But no matter how hard she tried, her mind kept drifting back to the cafe. To the way Leo had looked at her, and the way Maya’s hand had rested so comfortably on his arm. Elena sighed and shut her laptop. The university library had grown quieter as evening approached, and the soft hum of the air conditioner filled the silence around her. She gathered her things, ready to leave, when she heard a familiar voice behind her. “You always run away when things get uncomfortable.” Her body stiffened. “Leo” Of course it was him. Elena slowly turned around. He stood a few steps away, hands tucked casually into his pockets, watching her with that same unreadable expression he had worn earlier. “What are you doing here?” she asked. “Studying,” he replied simply. Elena raised an eyebrow. “You don’t study.” Leo smirked slightly. “Maybe you don’t know me as well as you think.” For a moment, neither of them spoke. The library was almost empty now. Rows of books surrounded them, and the soft golden lights made everything feel strangely intimate. Elena shifted uncomfortably. “Where’s Maya ?Leo’s jaw tightened slightly at the question. “She went home.” Something about the way he said it made Elena feel like she had stepped into dangerous territory. She grabbed her bag and ready to leave. But Leo stepped forward, blocking her path. Not aggressively. Just enough to stop her. “Why are you avoiding me?” he asked quietly. “I’m not.” “You are.” His voice was calm, but his eyes searched her face like he was looking for something she refused to show. Elena crossed her arms. “You’re imagining things.” Leo leaned a little closer, her heart immediately began to race. “Am I?” he murmured. The space between them felt smaller than it should have. Elena could feel his presence, his warmth, his scent, the way his eyes never seemed to leave hers. This was exactly the kind of situation she had spent years avoiding. Because whenever Leo stood this close… Everything between them changed. “You’re with Maya,” Elena said quickly, as if reminding both of them. Leo didn’t move, his gaze dropped briefly to her lips before returning to her eyes. “I know.” The words were simple, but the tension behind them was tough. Elena swallowed. “Then maybe you should act like it.” For the first time, Leo’s confident expression faltered slightly. Something darker flickered across his face. “Is that what this is about?” he asked. Elena didn’t answer. Because if she did, she might say the truth. That seeing him with Maya felt wrong, that every time Maya touched him, something twisted painfully inside her chest. Leo studied her carefully. Then he stepped even closer. Now there was barely any distance between them. “Elena,” he said softly, “look at me.” She already was. And that was the problem. Because the longer she looked at him, the harder it became to remember why they had drawn the line between them in the first place. But the tension in the quiet library said something completely different. Leo exhaled slowly, his voice low. “You know this thing between us…” He paused. “…it’s not just in my head.” Elena’s heart pounded so loudly she was sure he could hear it. She could’ve step back or walk away, But she didn’t. And that scared her more than anything. Because the space between them, the one they had carefully maintained for years was disappearing. And neither of them seemed willing to stop it. The realization settled heavily between them. For a second, everything felt suspended. The quiet library. The dim lighting. The faint hum of the air conditioner, none of it mattered. All Elena could focus on was how close he was. Too close. Her breath came out slower than usual, like her body was trying to stay calm even when her mind wasn’t. Leo didn’t move, step back or say anything. He just stood there, watching her like he was waiting. Waiting for her to deny it or push him away, But Elena didn’t. And that silence said more than words ever could. Her fingers tightened slightly around the strap of her bag. “Leo…” she started softly. But her voice trailed off. Because she didn’t know what came next. When something you’ve avoided for years suddenly stands right in front of you, impossible to ignore? Leo tilted his head slightly. “Say it,” he murmured. She shook her head immediately. “No.” A faint smile touched his lips, but it wasn’t playful. It was knowing. “Exactly.” That one word made her chest tighten. He understood. And that made this even more dangerous. Elena forced herself to take a small step back. Just one. But even that small movement felt like breaking something fragile. Leo noticed. His eyes flickered briefly to the space she created. Then back to her. “You’re scared,” he said quietly. “I’m not scared.” “You are.” His voice wasn’t teasing, it was certain. And that certainty made it harder to argue. Elena let out a small breath. “I’m being realistic.” Leo raised an eyebrow slightly. “About what?” She hesitated. Then said it. “You have a girlfriend. And then she said the truth. For a moment, Leo didn’t respond… His jaw tightened slightly. And something unreadable passed through his expression. “I know that,” he said finally. Elena searched his face. “Then why are you doing this?” The question came out softer than she intended, honest. Leo looked at her like he was considering his answer carefully. Then he said, “Because pretending this isn’t happening doesn’t make it go away.” Her breath caught again. The words were simple. But they hit deeper than anything else he had said. Because she had been pretending for years. Pretending the tension didn’t exist, pretending the way he looked at her didn’t matter. Pretending her heart didn’t react every time he got too close. But now… There was no pretending, Not anymore. Elena looked away first. She had to. Because if she kept looking at him like that, she might forget everything else, forget Maya and also the consequences. And that wasn’t something she could afford. “We shouldn’t be doing this,” she said quietly. Leo didn’t argue. But he didn’t agree either. Instead, he stepped back this time. Creating space. But somehow, it didn’t feel like distance. It felt like restraint. Like he was choosing not to cross the line… Even though he wanted to. “Maybe,” he said. That wasn’t reassuring If anything, it made things worse. Because “maybe” meant uncertainty. And uncertainty meant the tension wasn’t going anywhere. Elena adjusted her bag on her shoulder. “I’m leaving.” Leo nodded once. “Okay.” But neither of them moved immediately, It was like their bodies were out of sync with their decisions. Like something invisible was still holding them in place. Finally, Elena turned and started walking. Her steps were steady. Controlled. But her heart wasn’t. She could feel his gaze on her back as she moved toward the exit. And even without turning around, she knew he was still standing there watching. When she pushed the library door open, the cool evening air hit her instantly. It should have felt relieving. But it didn’t, because the tension didn’t stay behind, it followed her. Elena paused just outside the entrance, taking a slow breath. She told herself it was over, that she could go back to normal but deep down she knew the truth that nothing about that felt normal and it wouldn’t go back to normal. Not after the way he looked at her, not after the way she didn’t walk away when she should have. Inside the library, Leo finally moved, he ran his hand through his hair, exhaling slowly. For the first time, he looked unsure. Because this wasn’t simple anymore, it was something neither of them had named, but both of them felt it. And the worst part, it wasn’t fading anymore it was growing. And sooner or later, that quiet tension would demand something from both of them.
