Chapter 14 — The Werewolf King's Challenge

2143 Words
The Blood Moon cracked. A thin line of darkness spread across its crimson surface, splitting the moon like glass. Then— BOOM! The entire Vampire Capital trembled. Noah stood beneath the broken moon, the second Blood Crown fragment floating above his hand. His new system remained silent. No level. No experience bar. No rank. Only one message remained: [THE HOST MUST DEFINE HIS OWN PATH.] Noah stared at it. "Fine." He closed his hand. The Blood Crown fragment disappeared into his body. [BLOOD CROWN: 2/7] A wave of power surged through him. His golden-crimson eyes flashed. Then the silver mark on his chest burned. Noah immediately dropped to one knee. "Ah—!" Elara rushed toward him. "Noah!" His mother stopped her. "Don't touch him." Elara looked at her. "Why?" "Because the challenge has begun." The mark spread. Silver lines traveled across Noah's chest and up his neck. Then a massive wolf's head appeared behind him. Its eyes were silver. Its fangs were longer than swords. The wolf opened its mouth. A voice thundered through the chamber. "NOAH VALE." Noah slowly stood. "You're the Werewolf King." The wolf spirit stared at him. "I AM." Noah looked around. "Where are you?" "Beyond the northern mountains." A pause. "Come." Noah frowned. "Why?" "Because you carry the Blood Crown." The silver wolf growled. "And because you carry the blood of my enemy." Noah's expression hardened. "The First Vampire." "Yes." The spirit leaned closer. "Bring the Crown." The mark on Noah's chest burned brighter. "If you survive my kingdom, you may take the third fragment." The connection vanished. Noah remained still. Kael broke the silence. "You're going." Noah nodded. "Of course." Elara crossed her arms. "Then I'm coming." Noah looked at her. "Elara—" "No." She stepped closer. "You've spent the entire journey trying to protect me." She smiled. "Now it's my turn." Noah sighed. "Fine." Kael lifted his sword. "I'm coming too." Noah raised an eyebrow. "I thought you had a city to save." Kael looked toward the destroyed capital. "The city has seven Lords." He pointed at himself. "And apparently one fewer Lord if I die." Noah laughed. "Fair enough." His father stepped forward. "I'm staying." Noah looked at him. "Why?" "Someone must deal with the First Vampire." Noah looked toward the sky. The creature was gone. Only the Blood Moon remained. "You can't beat it." His father smiled faintly. "I don't need to." Noah frowned. "I need time." "For what?" His father looked toward the seventh door. "For you." --- THE NORTHERN ROAD The journey north began before sunrise. Noah, Elara, and Kael left the Vampire Capital through the shattered northern gate. The city behind them was still burning. Thousands of vampires were rebuilding. Others were searching for survivors. The Seven Lords had divided the city into districts. Astarion controlled the eastern quarter. Seraph controlled the southern district. Veyra had taken the western walls. Malachar and Draven were hunting the remaining Bloodless. Nyx had disappeared. Kael had chosen to travel with Noah. And Noah's father remained beneath the city. Watching. Waiting. The road ahead was covered in snow. Noah looked toward the horizon. "I didn't think there would be snow this close to the Vampire Capital." Kael shrugged. "The world doesn't care about vampire geography." Elara laughed. Noah glanced at her. "You seem happier." Elara's smile faded slightly. "I'm trying." "Because of Mother?" Elara stopped walking. Noah stopped too. Kael continued ahead, giving them privacy. Elara looked at the mountains. "I spent years believing she was dead." Noah didn't speak. "I remembered her voice." She touched her chest. "But I couldn't remember her face." Noah looked at her. "Now you know she's alive." Elara nodded. "That's the problem." "Why?" "Because now I can lose her again." Noah understood. He placed a hand on her shoulder. "You won't." Elara looked at him. "You can't promise that." "No." Noah looked toward the mountains. "But I can promise I'll fight." Elara smiled. "That's enough." --- THE WOLF TERRITORY Three days later, they reached the northern mountains. The snow became deeper. The trees became enormous. No birds sang. No animals moved. The forest was watching them. Kael suddenly stopped. Noah looked at him. "What?" Kael pointed toward the trees. "We're surrounded." Noah activated Blood Sense. Nothing. He frowned. "I don't sense anyone." Kael smiled. "Exactly." A howl echoed. Then another. Then another. Hundreds of howls filled the mountains. Elara drew her weapon. Noah's eyes turned crimson. Figures emerged from the forest. Werewolves. Dozens. Then hundreds. Their bodies were massive. Their fur ranged from silver to black. Some carried weapons. Others wore armor. At the center stood a woman. She had silver hair and golden eyes. She stepped forward. "State your name." Noah walked forward. "Noah Vale." The werewolves immediately growled. The woman raised her hand. Silence. She looked at Noah's chest. The silver mark was glowing. "So you're the vampire." Noah nodded. "Yes." She smiled. "Then you're either incredibly brave..." Her eyes narrowed. "...or incredibly stupid." Noah smiled. "I've been called both." Elara whispered: "Mostly the second." Noah looked at her. "Thanks." The werewolf woman laughed. Then she turned toward the mountains. "Come." Noah followed. --- THE WOLF KINGDOM The Werewolf Kingdom was nothing like the Vampire Capital. There were no gothic towers. No crimson lanterns. No giant castles. Instead, the kingdom was carved directly into the mountains. Stone halls. Massive gates. Fire pits. Ancient wolf statues. Thousands of werewolves moved through the city. Some were human-looking. Others remained in partial transformation. All of them stopped when Noah passed. Whispers followed. "The vampire." "The Crown bearer." "Is that the Bloodless Heir?" "He's smaller than I expected." Noah sighed. "I can hear you." Everyone immediately became silent. The woman leading them laughed. "Good." She turned. "My name is Lyra." Noah looked at her. "You're a werewolf?" Lyra smiled. "Princess." Kael raised an eyebrow. "Princess?" Lyra nodded. "Daughter of the Werewolf King." Noah looked toward the enormous throne at the end of the hall. "And your father?" Lyra pointed upward. "Waiting for you." --- THE WEREWOLF KING The doors opened. A massive throne room appeared. At the end sat a man. He was enormous. Nearly three meters tall. His hair was silver. His eyes were golden. Scarred armor covered his body. A giant black wolf rested beside his throne. The Werewolf King looked at Noah. The room became silent. Then— BOOM! His aura exploded. Noah was forced backward. Elara grabbed his arm. Kael planted his sword into the floor. The Werewolf King's voice thundered. "VAMPIRE." Noah stood upright. "King." "Why have you come?" "The Blood Crown." The Werewolf King smiled. "Then you came for my fragment." "Yes." "Do you believe you deserve it?" Noah answered honestly. "No." The Werewolf King raised an eyebrow. "Good." Noah continued. "But I'll earn it." The room went silent. Then the Werewolf King laughed. A deep roar. "You speak like a king." Noah shook his head. "I'm not a king." "Not yet." The Werewolf King stood. His aura intensified. "I will test you." Noah stepped forward. "How?" The King removed his armor. "I'll fight you." Elara immediately stepped forward. "Noah—" Noah raised a hand. "I'm doing it." The Werewolf King smiled. "Good." He transformed. Bones cracked. Muscles expanded. Silver fur erupted across his body. His face became that of an enormous wolf. His claws touched the floor. BOOM. The stone shattered beneath his feet. [ANCIENT SOVEREIGN DETECTED.] Noah's new system appeared. [WEREWOLF KING] [THREAT LEVEL: EXTREME] Noah smiled. "Finally." --- THE KING'S TEST The Werewolf King attacked. Noah barely dodged. BOOM! A claw destroyed the stone wall behind him. Noah used Shadow Step. He disappeared. Reappeared above the King. Blood Rush activated. His fist struck the King's shoulder. CRACK! The Werewolf King slid backward. Noah landed. The King looked at his shoulder. Then smiled. "Good." He vanished. Noah's Blood Sense screamed. He turned. Too late. The King's fist struck his stomach. BOOM! Noah flew through the arena. He smashed through the wall. Elara screamed. "Noah!" Dust filled the room. Silence. Then— Noah stood. Blood ran from his mouth. His regeneration activated. The wound closed. He smiled. "That hurt." The Werewolf King laughed. "Good." Noah charged. The battle exploded. Punch. Claw. Shadow Step. Blood Rush. Silver lightning. Crimson energy. The entire arena shook. Noah's body was pushed beyond its limits. His muscles tore. Regenerated. Tore again. Regenerated again. The system continued analyzing. [COMBAT DATA ACQUIRED.] [WEREWOLF BLOODLINE ANALYSIS: 8%] Noah dodged another claw. [12%] He countered. [19%] The Werewolf King blocked. [27%] Noah realized something. The system wasn't simply measuring the King. It was learning from him. Noah smiled. "So that's how you work." The King heard him. "Explain." Noah raised his fists. "You show me your blood..." His eyes turned gold. "...and my system learns." The Werewolf King stopped. Then his smile became enormous. "Excellent." His aura exploded. "Then learn this." He released his full power. [WARNING.] [SOVEREIGN POWER DETECTED.] [ADAPTATION LIMIT EXCEEDED.] Noah's body began shaking. The King charged. Noah didn't move. Elara screamed. "NOAH!" At the last moment— Noah opened his palm. The silver mark on his chest activated. The King's attack stopped. The Werewolf King froze. "What?" Noah looked at his hand. He hadn't controlled the King. He had interrupted his blood. Just like he had done with the First Vampire. [ABILITY EVOLVED.] [BLOOD INTERRUPTION] → [BLOOD NULLIFICATION] Noah's eyes widened. The Werewolf King slowly lowered his fist. Then he laughed. "You truly are the Empty Blood." Noah stared. "You knew?" The King nodded. "I have known since the moment you entered my kingdom." --- THE THIRD FRAGMENT The Werewolf King returned to his human form. He walked toward the throne. From behind it, he retrieved a small silver container. Inside was a crimson fragment. The Blood Crown. Noah stared. "That's it." The King nodded. "The third fragment." He handed it to Noah. [BLOOD CROWN FRAGMENT DETECTED.] [3/7] Noah's system flashed. [NEW ABILITY AVAILABLE.] [SOVEREIGN ABSORPTION] The host may temporarily absorb characteristics from ancient sovereign bloodlines. Noah looked at the King. "Why are you giving this to me?" The Werewolf King smiled. "Because the Crown doesn't belong to me." "Who does?" The King looked at Noah. "You." Noah frowned. "All seven fragments?" "Eventually." Then the King's expression became serious. "But understand something." "What?" "The Crown will not make you stronger." Noah waited. "It will reveal what you already are." The room became silent. The King stepped closer. "And what you are..." He looked toward the Blood Moon visible through the broken ceiling. "...is something even the First Vampire fears." --- THE ATTACK A scream echoed from outside. Then another. The doors burst open. A werewolf guard fell inside. "MY KING!" The Werewolf King turned. "What happened?" The guard struggled to breathe. "The dead..." Everyone froze. "They're here." Noah's expression changed. "What dead?" The guard looked at him. "The army from the Land of the Dead." A massive explosion shook the kingdom. The Werewolf King immediately drew his weapon. "How did they cross the boundary?" The guard answered: "They have a new commander." Noah looked toward the mountains. "Who?" The guard whispered: "A woman." The doors opened again. A cold wind entered. Black mist covered the floor. A figure walked through it. She wore a crown made of bones. Her eyes were blue flames. Her skin was pale. Behind her marched thousands of undead warriors. The ruler of the Land of the Dead had arrived. She looked directly at Noah. "So..." Her voice was calm. "You are the Empty Blood." Noah raised the Blood Crown. "And you're here for this." The woman smiled. "No." She pointed toward Noah. "I'm here for you." The Werewolf King stepped in front of Noah. "You will not touch him." The woman smiled. "King of Wolves..." She raised one hand. "Move." The dead army surged forward. The Werewolves roared. The mountains shook. Noah looked at the battlefield. Then his new system appeared. [NEW QUEST] THE DEAD KINGDOM Objective: Survive the invasion of the Land of the Dead. Secondary Objective: Discover why the Dead King wants the Empty Blood. Reward: Unknown. Failure: Death. Noah looked at the undead army. Then at Elara. Then at Kael. Then at the Werewolf King. He smiled. "Looks like we're not getting much rest." Elara raised her weapon. "Did you expect any?" Noah laughed. The Werewolf King transformed. Kael drew his sword. The mountains echoed with howls. And the Dead Queen raised her hand. Thousands of dead warriors charged. Noah stepped forward. His golden-crimson eyes burned beneath the Blood Moon. The third Blood Crown fragment pulsed inside his body. [BLOOD CROWN: 3/7] And for the first time... The new system displayed something Noah had never seen before. [LEVEL: 9] [RANK: UNDEFINED] [BLOODLINE: UNKNOWN] [TITLE: BLOODLESS HEIR] [NEXT EVOLUTION: LOCKED] Noah smiled. "Come." The battle began. To be continued...
