Chapter 1 — The Awakening
Rain hammered against the city that night.
It poured from the sky like the heavens themselves had cracked open, flooding the streets with silver streams beneath the flickering glow of streetlights.
Noah Vale walked alone.
His black jacket was soaked through, his shoes splashing through puddles as he hurried down the narrow alley behind the old shopping district.
He kept looking over his shoulder.
Nothing.
Only rain.
Only darkness.
Yet the feeling remained.
Someone was following him.
Noah stopped.
His breathing became shallow.
“Who's there?”
His voice disappeared beneath the roar of the storm.
No answer.
He stared into the darkness between two buildings.
For a moment, he thought he saw a pair of red eyes.
Then they vanished.
Noah swallowed.
“I'm imagining things.”
He turned around.
That was when something struck him from behind.
CRACK!
Pain exploded across the back of his head.
Noah collapsed onto the wet pavement.
His vision blurred.
He tried to move, but his arms refused to cooperate.
Footsteps approached.
Slow.
Calm.
Deliberate.
A figure stopped beside him.
Noah could barely see the person's face through the rain.
“Why...?”
His voice was barely a whisper.
The figure said nothing.
Instead, Noah felt something sharp pierce his side.
His body jerked.
Warm blood mixed with the cold rain beneath him.
His heartbeat became weaker.
Once.
Twice.
Then slower.
Noah's eyes began to close.
He thought about his life.
His family.
The ordinary dreams he'd once had.
Everything seemed so insignificant now.
So this is how it ends?
The footsteps slowly disappeared.
Noah remained alone in the alley.
His blood continued to spread across the pavement.
His heartbeat stopped.
---
[** signs detected.]
[Critical condition.]
[Host consciousness: 3%.]
Darkness surrounded Noah.
There was no pain anymore.
No sound.
No body.
Nothing.
Then—
DING!
A strange sound echoed inside his mind.
Noah's consciousness stirred.
What was that?
Another sound followed.
DING!
A crimson window appeared in the darkness.
Noah stared at it.
He didn't know how he could see it.
There was no light around him.
Yet the words were perfectly clear.
[VAMPIRE SYSTEM ACTIVATION PROTOCOL INITIATED.]
Noah froze.
Vampire... system?
Another window appeared.
[Searching for suitable host...]
[Searching...]
[Searching...]
[Compatible host found.]
[Host: Noah Vale.]
[** signs: 0%.]
[Soul integrity: 17%.]
[Emergency resurrection required.]
Noah tried to speak.
What are you?
The system answered immediately.
[I am the Vampire System.]
Noah's mind went blank.
Vampire?
[Correct.]
Am I dead?
There was a brief pause.
[Yes.]
Noah stared at the screen.
For some reason, the answer felt strangely calm.
Then why can I still think?
[Because your transformation has begun.]
Suddenly—
BOOM!
Something exploded inside his chest.
Noah screamed.
Pain returned.
But this pain was different.
It wasn't the pain of a wound.
It felt as if every bone in his body was being shattered and rebuilt at the same time.
His veins burned.
His muscles tightened.
His heart suddenly began beating again.
THUMP.
THUMP.
THUMP.
But the rhythm was wrong.
Too powerful.
Too deep.
Noah's eyes opened.
---
He gasped.
Cold rain struck his face.
He was lying exactly where he had fallen.
But something had changed.
Noah slowly pushed himself upright.
His hand went to his chest.
His wound was gone.
The blood-soaked clothing remained, but beneath it there was nothing.
No scar.
No injury.
Nothing.
“What...?”
His voice sounded different.
He looked toward a puddle beside him.
His reflection stared back.
His skin looked paler.
His pupils seemed strangely sharp.
And his eyes—
For a brief moment—
They glowed crimson.
Noah stumbled backward.
“No.”
The red glow disappeared.
He touched his face.
Then his neck.
His heartbeat was almost impossible to feel.
He was alive.
But he wasn't sure he was human anymore.
DING!
The crimson window appeared again.
[Emergency resurrection successful.]
[Race: Vampire.]
[Rank: F.]
[Level: 1.]
[Blood Energy: 10/10.]
[Physical Condition: Stable.]
Noah stared at the information.
“A vampire...”
He laughed nervously.
“This has to be some kind of dream.”
He slapped himself.
SMACK!
“Ouch.”
He stared at the puddle.
“Definitely not a dream.”
A sudden smell reached his nose.
Blood.
Noah froze.
It wasn't coming from his wound.
It was coming from somewhere nearby.
His head turned automatically.
Across the alley, behind a stack of discarded crates, a small animal was trapped beneath a broken metal frame.
A stray cat.
Its paw was bleeding.
Noah's pupils widened.
His mouth became dry.
His entire body reacted.
His heart accelerated.
His throat burned.
Blood.
He took one step toward the animal.
Then another.
He stopped himself.
“What am I doing?”
The hunger intensified.
His vision became sharper.
He could hear the tiny creature's heartbeat.
Thump.
Thump.
Thump.
Noah's breathing became heavier.
The system appeared.
[Blood source detected.]
[Quality: Common.]
[Blood absorption available.]
[Recommendation: Consume blood.]
“No.”
Noah stepped backward.
“I won't.”
The hunger grew stronger.
He grabbed his head.
“Get out of my head!”
The system remained silent.
The cat continued to bleed.
Noah clenched his fists.
He had spent his entire life believing there were things humans simply couldn't become.
Monsters.
Vampires.
Creatures that hunted people in the darkness.
Now he was one of them.
“No.”
He forced himself to look away.
“I won't become a monster.”
For several seconds, Noah stood there fighting against the hunger.
Then the system displayed another message.
[Warning.]
[Blood deprivation detected.]
[Host condition deteriorating.]
[Failure to consume blood may result in loss of rational control.]
Noah's expression changed.
“What?”
The world suddenly became blurry.
His body moved before he could think.
He was standing beside the injured cat.
His hand reached toward it.
“Noah... stop.”
His fingers trembled.
The animal looked at him.
Noah could hear its heartbeat.
So clearly.
So beautifully.
He closed his eyes.
“I don't want to hurt you.”
Then he noticed something.
The cat wasn't afraid.
It simply stared at him.
Noah slowly removed a piece of cloth from his jacket and wrapped the animal's injured paw.
The hunger remained.
But his mind was still his own.
He stood.
“If I have to live like this...”
He looked toward the dark sky.
“Then I'll find another way.”
The system responded.
[Host has resisted instinct.]
[Hidden characteristic detected.]
[Willpower: Exceptional.]
[New passive ability unlocked.]
[Mind of the Mortal.]
Noah blinked.
[Mind of the Mortal]
Resistance against vampiric instincts increases as the host's willpower grows.
Noah stared at the ability.
A faint smile appeared on his face.
“So I really do have a choice.”
Then—
DING!
Another notification appeared.
This one was different.
The letters were darker.
More ominous.
[ERROR.]
[Bloodline information corrupted.]
[Attempting recovery...]
Noah's smile disappeared.
The screen flickered.
[Bloodline: UNKNOWN.]
[Classification: SEALED.]
[Warning.]
[The host's bloodline should not exist.]
Noah stared at the message.
“What does that mean?”
The system gave no answer.
Instead—
A distant sound echoed through the alley.
Howl.
Noah turned.
Something was standing at the end of the street.
A man.
Tall.
Completely motionless.
His clothes were soaked by the rain, but he didn't seem bothered by the cold.
Noah's instincts screamed.
Danger.
The man's head slowly lifted.
His eyes were glowing red.
Noah froze.
The stranger smiled.
“You survived.”
Noah's blood ran cold.
“How do you know me?”
The man took a step forward.
Then another.
“You're asking the wrong question.”
He stopped beneath the streetlight.
His face looked strangely young.
Too young.
Yet his eyes were ancient.
“The right question is...”
His smile widened.
“Why did you survive?”
Noah's system suddenly went into overdrive.
[EXTREME DANGER.]
[High-level vampire detected.]
[Estimated opponent level: 27.]
[Host level: 1.]
[Survival probability: 2.4%.]
Noah's heart sank.
Level twenty-seven.
He was only level one.
The stranger raised his hand.
“You carry a scent I haven't smelled in centuries.”
Noah stepped backward.
“What do you want?”
The vampire's eyes narrowed.
“To confirm something.”
“What?”
The vampire looked directly into Noah's eyes.
“You shouldn't have awakened.”
Noah felt the system react.
[WARNING.]
[Ancient bloodline recognition detected.]
[Restriction protocol activated.]
[First lock identified.]
[LOCK 1: SEALED.]
Noah stared at the crimson screen.
A strange feeling emerged inside him.
Fear.
But beneath the fear was something else.
Something powerful.
Something hungry.
Something that had been sleeping inside him for a very long time.
The vampire suddenly disappeared.
Noah's eyes widened.
A fraction of a second later—
BOOM!
The wall beside him exploded.
Noah was thrown across the alley.
He crashed into a stack of crates.
Pain shot through his body.
The vampire stood where Noah had been moments earlier.
“Interesting.”
Noah slowly stood.
Blood trickled from the corner of his mouth.
He wiped it away.
His eyes began glowing crimson.
The system appeared.
[Combat mode activated.]
[Emergency quest generated.]
SURVIVE
Objective: Survive the encounter.
Reward: Unknown.
Failure: Death.
Noah looked at the vampire.
Then at his trembling hands.
He had no weapon.
No experience.
No idea what he was doing.
But for the first time since his death, Noah smiled.
“Fine.”
The vampire's expression changed.
Noah raised his fists.
“If I'm already dead once...”
The crimson system flickered behind his eyes.
[Hidden potential detected.]
[Unlocking combat assistance...]
[1%...]
[5%...]
[10%...]
Noah's smile disappeared.
His eyes burned brighter.
“I'm not dying again.”
[VAMPIRE SYSTEM — FIRST LOCK BREAKING.]
