Chapter 20 — The Hunger Beyond

The first star disappeared. No explosion. No sound. No warning. It simply vanished. Noah stood at the edge of the collapsing Crimson Abyss and stared into the sky. One moment, the star had existed. The next— Nothing. Aurelion stood beside him. The former First Vampire no longer looked like a monster. He looked human. Too human. Black hair. Pale skin. Crimson eyes. A calm expression. Yet Noah could feel something terrifying beneath that appearance. An existence older than every vampire Noah had ever encountered. Aurelion looked toward the sky. "It's begun." Noah crossed his arms. "What exactly has begun?" "The Hunger Beyond." Elara approached. "You're going to have to explain." Aurelion looked at her. Then at Kael. Then Noah's parents. "The thing I spent thousands of years trying to escape." Noah's eyes narrowed. "You said it consumed worlds." Aurelion nodded. "Yes." "How?" "It doesn't attack worlds." Noah waited. "It eats their existence." Silence. Kael frowned. "That's impossible." Aurelion looked at him. "So was resurrection." Kael said nothing. Aurelion continued. "It doesn't destroy a planet." "It doesn't burn cities." "It doesn't kill people." "It simply makes them..." He paused. "...never have existed." Elara's expression changed. "Then how do we fight something like that?" Aurelion looked at Noah. "We don't." Noah frowned. "Then what?" "We make sure it cannot find the source." Noah looked toward the sky. "What source?" Aurelion answered: "You." --- THE SEVERANCE Noah stared at him. "Why me?" "Because you're the only existence it cannot consume." Noah's mother stepped forward. "That's what the First Dawn believed." Aurelion looked at her. "They were right." She shook her head. "Not completely." Noah looked between them. "What aren't you telling me?" His father answered. "The Empty Blood wasn't designed to fight the Hunger Beyond." Noah frowned. "Then what was it designed for?" His father looked toward the sky. "To hide from it." Noah's eyes widened. "The Empty Blood makes me invisible to it." Aurelion nodded. "Exactly." Noah thought for a moment. "Then why can it see me now?" Aurelion's expression became serious. "Because you activated the Blood Crown." Noah's face changed. "So collecting the seven fragments..." "Revealed you." Noah looked at his chest. The Crown was complete. Seven fragments. Seven powers. Seven paths. A weapon that was supposed to seal the First Vampire had instead announced Noah's existence to something far greater. Noah sighed. "That's just perfect." Elara laughed nervously. "You do have terrible luck." "Thanks." --- THE SEVEN SOVEREIGNS Aurelion raised his hand. Seven symbols appeared in the air. Vampire. Werewolf. Death. Abyss. Celestial. Seraphic. Empty. "These were never simply bloodlines." Noah looked at them. "What are they?" "Anchors." Aurelion pointed to the first symbol. "The Vampire Bloodline anchors memory." The second. "Werewolf anchors instinct." The third. "Death anchors endings." The fourth. "Abyss anchors space." The fifth. "Celestial anchors creation." The sixth. "Seraphic anchors judgment." Then he pointed to the final symbol. "And Empty anchors possibility." Noah stared. "Possibility?" Aurelion nodded. "The ability for something to exist that didn't exist before." Noah's mother whispered: "That's why the Empty Blood was dangerous." Aurelion smiled. "It isn't dangerous." He looked at Noah. "It is freedom." --- THE FIRST MESSAGE Noah's original system suddenly appeared. [NEW INFORMATION UNLOCKED.] [SEVEN SOVEREIGNS CONFIRMED.] [CURRENT STATUS:] - Vampire Sovereign — Noah Vale - Werewolf Sovereign — Unknown - Death Sovereign — Unknown - Abyss Sovereign — Unknown - Celestial Sovereign — Unknown - Seraphic Sovereign — Unknown - Empty Sovereign — Noah Vale Noah stared. "Wait." He pointed toward the list. "Why does it say Vampire Sovereign too?" Aurelion smiled. "Because you still carry the original vampire blood." "But I rejected it." "You rejected its authority." He pointed toward Noah's chest. "You didn't erase its existence." Noah frowned. "So I'm both?" "Yes." The system added another message. [HYBRID SOVEREIGN STATUS CONFIRMED.] Noah stared. "That's new." Kael laughed. "At this point, I don't think anyone knows what you are." Noah looked at him. "Finally, someone understands." --- THE SECOND STAR Another star disappeared. This time Noah felt it. A cold sensation passed through his body. His Blood Sense suddenly went silent. Noah looked up. "Something's wrong." Aurelion nodded. "Second star." Noah looked toward the sky. A constellation was missing. Elara whispered: "Was that supposed to be there?" Aurelion answered: "Yes." Noah's system flashed. [EXTERNAL EXISTENCE LOSS DETECTED.] [DISTANCE: UNKNOWN.] [CAUSE: UNKNOWN ENTITY.] [THREAT LEVEL: UNMEASURABLE.] Noah clenched his fists. "Can the system track it?" [NEGATIVE.] "Can you predict where it will appear next?" [NEGATIVE.] "Can we stop it?" A pause. [POSSIBILITY: 0.03%.] Noah stared. "That's terrible." The system replied: [CORRECTION.] [POSSIBILITY: 0.03% WITH CURRENT RESOURCES.] Noah's eyes narrowed. "So we can increase it." [YES.] Noah smiled. "Then that's what we'll do." --- THE ALLIANCE Noah turned toward Aurelion. "You said the Seven Sovereigns are needed." "Yes." "Then we find them." Aurelion nodded. "Exactly." Noah looked at his father. "Who is the Werewolf Sovereign?" "The Werewolf King." "Death?" "The Dead Queen." "Abyss?" His father hesitated. "We don't know." Noah frowned. "Celestial?" "Unknown." "Seraphic?" "Unknown." Noah looked toward Aurelion. "And you?" Aurelion smiled. "I am no longer the Vampire Sovereign." Noah looked confused. "Then what are you?" Aurelion's eyes turned black. "I am what happens when a sovereign rejects its own bloodline." Noah stared. "The First Empty?" Aurelion shook his head. "No." He looked toward the darkness. "The Fallen Sovereign." --- THE FALLEN SOVEREIGN The system reacted immediately. [NEW SOVEREIGN CLASS DETECTED.] [FALLEN SOVEREIGN] [ORIGIN: UNKNOWN] [STATUS: UNSTABLE] [THREAT: UNMEASURABLE] Noah stared at Aurelion. "You've got your own classification." Aurelion laughed. "I've had thousands of years to earn it." Noah studied him. "Can I trust you?" Aurelion answered honestly. "No." Noah raised an eyebrow. Aurelion smiled. "But you can trust my goal." "Which is?" "Destroy the Hunger Beyond." Noah nodded. "That's enough for now." --- THE THIRD STAR A third star disappeared. Then a fourth. Then a fifth. Everyone became silent. The sky was changing. Entire constellations were disappearing. The world itself seemed smaller. Aurelion looked worried. "It's moving faster." Noah asked: "How long?" "Before it reaches this world?" Aurelion nodded. "Months." Noah frowned. "Months?" "Maybe weeks." His father stepped forward. "How do we stop it?" Aurelion looked toward the Blood Crown. "The Crown can create a barrier." Noah raised it. "Then let's use it." Aurelion shook his head. "Not yet." "Why?" "Because the Crown isn't complete." Noah stared. "It's seven of seven." "Fragments." Aurelion pointed toward the crown. "But the Core is missing." Noah's expression changed. "The Core?" "The fifth fragment you found wasn't the true Core." Noah froze. "What?" Aurelion smiled. "It was a decoy." Noah's mother looked shocked. "The First Dawn would never..." Aurelion interrupted. "They did." Noah clenched his fists. "Then where is the real Core?" Aurelion looked toward the sky. Noah followed his gaze. Then Aurelion pointed downward. "Inside the world." --- THE HEART OF EARTH Noah's father stared. "You mean..." "The Core isn't an object." Aurelion looked at Noah. "It's a location." Noah frowned. "Where?" Aurelion answered: "The center of the world." Silence. Kael stared at him. "You're saying we have to go underground." "Deeper." "How deep?" Aurelion smiled. "Past the roots of the world." Noah sighed. "Of course." Elara laughed. "Why do your quests always get worse?" Noah looked at her. "I don't make the quests." The system appeared. [NEW MAIN QUEST] THE HEART OF THE WORLD Objective: Reach the Core of the World. Objective: Recover the True Blood Crown Core. Objective: Activate the World Barrier. Time Remaining: Unknown. [WARNING.] The Hunger Beyond has noticed the Blood Crown. Noah stared at the final line. "Noticed?" Aurelion looked upward. "Yes." "What happens now?" Aurelion answered: "It sends something." --- THE FIRST HERALD The sky suddenly turned white. Not bright. White. Every star disappeared. The moon vanished. The sun disappeared. The entire world was illuminated by an unnatural white light. Then something descended. It wasn't a monster. It wasn't a creature. It was a shape. A humanoid silhouette without a face. It floated above Valoria. Noah's system immediately activated. [UNKNOWN ENTITY DETECTED.] [DESIGNATION: HERALD.] [ORIGIN: HUNGER BEYOND.] [THREAT LEVEL: UNMEASURABLE.] The Herald opened its mouth. But no sound came. Instead, every person in Valoria heard the same message inside their minds. "NOAH VALE." Noah stepped forward. The Herald looked at him. "YOU HAVE BEEN FOUND." Noah's eyes narrowed. "Who sent you?" "THE HUNGER." "Why?" The Herald raised one hand. The world around it began disappearing. A building vanished. Not destroyed. Not broken. Simply erased. Noah's eyes widened. "Everyone move!" The Herald pointed toward him. "RETURN TO THE SOURCE." Noah's Blood Crown activated. A golden barrier appeared. The erasure wave struck. BOOM! The barrier cracked. Noah screamed. His power surged. The Empty Sovereign awakened. [EMPTY AUTHORITY: ACTIVE.] The erasure wave stopped. Noah pushed it back. The Herald tilted its head. For the first time... It appeared confused. Noah smiled. "You're not the only one who can erase things." He raised his hand. [VOID STEP.] Noah disappeared. He reappeared above the Herald. His fist struck. BOOM! The Herald fell from the sky. Noah landed. The Herald stood. Uninjured. Noah's smile disappeared. "What?" Aurelion shouted: "Don't fight it!" Noah turned. "Why?" "Because it doesn't have a body!" Noah looked back. The Herald smiled. Then its body began dissolving. Aurelion shouted: "IT'S A PROJECTION!" Noah's eyes widened. The Herald disappeared. But before it vanished completely, it spoke one final sentence. "WE WILL COME FOR YOUR WORLD." Silence. Then the stars returned. Only a few remained. Noah looked at the sky. "How many?" Aurelion answered: "Not enough." --- THE NEW JOURNEY Noah turned toward his companions. "We're going to the center of the world." His father nodded. "Then we need the Seven Sovereigns." Elara stepped forward. "And the First Dawn." Noah looked at his mother. She nodded. "I'll lead you there." Kael raised his sword. "And the Vampire Capital?" Noah looked toward the distant horizon. "We'll return." "Why?" Noah's eyes burned. "Because we need an army." Aurelion smiled. "Now you're thinking like a king." Noah shook his head. "I'm not a king." He looked at the Blood Crown. "I don't want to rule anyone." Then he looked toward the stars. "I want everyone to have a world left to live in." The system appeared. [NEW TITLE ACQUIRED:] WORLD'S LAST HEIR [NEW OBJECTIVE ADDED:] Unite the Seven Sovereigns. Prepare the world for the Hunger Beyond. Reach the Heart of the World. Noah looked at the road ahead. The war against the First Vampire had ended. A greater war had begun. And somewhere beyond reality... The Hunger Beyond had finally learned his name. To be continued...
