Neighbors
Jenna POV
Sitting at my desk I just knew that no work will get done today so I slowly packed up my things, turned off my computer and left for home. I told my assistant that I’m calling it a day and that if anything comes up, she can get hold of me on my cellphone. Having an assistant was one of the perks of my job at Jade Financial Solutions where I’ve been a financial manager for over 3 years. It was 1pm so the drive home was a breeze as there weren’t that many commuters.
As I took the turn to head into our street, I realized a moving truck was blocking the entrance to the apartment building where I lived so I had to park my car across the street. “The new neighbors must have moved in today” I mumbled to myself. As I got to my door, I saw a tall dark haired guy was coming up the stairs while barking orders at the movers who seemed to be moving too slowly for his liking. I so badly wanted to give this guy a piece of my mind but caught myself and before I made a complete fool of myself I walked into my place and closed the door behind me.
I lived alone in a spacious two bedroomed apartment on the second floor of the Da Villa apartments in Seattle. The rent was not bad and it had everything a successful bachelorette needed
I headed into my bedroom to change out of my work clothes and into something more casual. I chose grey yoga pants and a loose fitting white t-shirt. Who knows, I might hit the gym later. As I walked to the kitchen I heard a loud thump and some glass break next door. I don't normally listen to what my neighbors are doing, but I held my breath trying to hear if everything was fine. I thought it best to go check what happened.
Taking my phone with me, just in case, I went over to my neighbor's door only to find it slightly opened. I knocked once, but there was no answer. Gently pushing the door wider open, “Hi, are you alright in there?” I asked loudly but once again I was met with silence. I started dialing the police when I saw a disheveled figure stumble out of one of the rooms with a towel pressed against his head and blood stains on his shirt. As I put my phone away and walked up to him I said “Hey, I live next door and got worried when I heard some glass break. Are you alright?” He took a moment to respond “I don’t remember what happened but when I woke up my head was bleeding and…” “You should get to the hospital to get checked out” I interrupted him. “I don’t think that will be necessary” but as he gave a step forward he almost collapsed on top of me.
As I helped him to steady himself I thought that all those gym sessions finally paid off as I had enough strength to help him steady himself against the couch. This guy was a tower of a man and I could tell that he wasn’t a stranger to working out. However, pushing those thoughts out of my mind I decided that we need to get him to the hospital A.S.A.P. “Where’s your car?” I asked. He replied that the vehicle will only be delivered tomorrow. “Okay, we will have to take mine. Stay here while I go and get my keys.” I bolted out of his apartment and into mine to grab my car keys and wallet. When I got back to him I put my hand around his waist and took his arm around my neck. I told him to lean on me if he feels too unstable. We sauntered out of the building and over to my car and I helped into the passenger seat and buckled him in before I raced over to my side and got in.
My mom is a doctor at the hospital so as soon as I started driving I phoned her. She was very surprised to hear from me but I had to cut her off and told her of our current situation. “Okay, we will get ready for when you get here but you need to keep talking to him because it sounds like a concussion and if he falls asleep now he might end up in a coma due to the swelling that may be there.” “Thank you mom, we will be there in less than 5 minutes.” I looked over to my passenger and saw that he was still with me, but looked very confused.
“What’s your name, neighbor?”
“Adrian Black, and yours?”
“Jennifer Stone but everyone calls me Jenna. So, from where did you move?”
“What’s with all the questions?” he asked accusingly.
I gave him the rundown of the short conversation I had with my mother and trying to explain that he may have a concussion.
“I don’t need you to take care of me. Why are you even helping me get to the hospital?”
I was hurt by his words and it made me think of what could have happened to him that would make him react this way when someone just wanted to help him out.
“I’m not the type of person that could leave an injured person by himself if I could do something about it. I wasn’t raised to be heartless” I said softly.
While trying to focus on the road, I saw him lean towards me out of the corner of my eye. I almost wanted to snap at him but I quickly realized that he is busy fainting. As gently as I could I shook his arm in an attempt to get him to come back to me.
“Hey! Hold on! We’re almost there.” I tried my best to keep him coherent as we stopped at the emergency entrance of the hospital. My mother and her team were already there to take him to the emergency room.
I waited in the visitors’ area of the hospital, as I could not get myself to leave. About an hour later my mother came to up to me and without hesitation I jumped up and gave her a tight hug. She was surprised by my actions but soon embraced me in a hug of her own.
“How is he mom?” My voice was laced with emotion.
“He is doing better. He lost a little bit of blood and he does have a concussion. We gave him medication to help with the swelling and we’ll be keeping him here for a few days to monitor the head injury but I believe he will make a full recovery.”
I was so relieved to hear that. Even though he was a stranger, I was glad that he will be fine.
“I’m so happy to hear that mom. Can I go in and see him?” My mother looked at me quizzically I just knew I had to explain. “I have to give him his house keys back,” I said while blushing (and I really wanted to see him again) but I left that thought just for myself. She pointed me to Adrian’s room and all of a sudden I got really nervous about seeing him.
I gently knocked on the door before I pushed it open and my heart sunk at the sight of him lying in bed with all the tubes and monitors hooked up to him. He stirred as soon as he heard my footsteps and looked confused by my presence. I quickly fished his keys from my pocket and held them up for him to see. “I just came to drop these off. I figured that you might want to call someone to bring you some clean clothes or whatever you may need.” “I don’t have anyone to call.” I heard the sadness in his voice but I did not want to press him on the matter. “If you want, I can grab a few things for you from your apartment.” I offered with a smile. Once again he looked confused by my friendliness and it made my heart break for him. Has anyone done anything for him without expecting nothing in return? “I don’t normally like it when people go through my belongings but it looks like I don’t have much of a choice so thank you.”
