01: Just A Pen.
Mara. "Raquel, I don't think I can do this." I said, as we stood outside the club with the music coming through the walls. Raquel is my best friend and also my roommate, the girl who sleeps three feet from my bed and has seen me cry over bad grades and cold noodles. "Yes, you can! That's why we're here." she said. I sighed, because she had practically dragged me to this welcome back party. All summer I had been making video edits of me and Leo, and I sent every single one to Raquel, since she was the only person who knew about my crush. It was a massive crush. Leonardo was the hockey lord of our school, and now that it was our final year, Raquel kept saying I had to tell him how I felt before it was too late. It wasn't that I didn't want to. The problem was that I had watched Leo for so long that I knew exactly what kind of girl he liked, and she was never someone like me. He went for slim girls with flat stomachs and long legs. Although I never hated being fat, but in the hockey world the slim girls got the attention, and I wasn't even close to slim thick. I looked at Raquel for a long time, then I swallowed hard. "What if it wasn't a sign? Maybe he was just trying to help me." "Mara, the hockey lord hardly notices any girl..." she said. "If he was helping you, that means he's feeling you." My face got hot. Earlier today, one of the IT girls had made jokes about me in front of everyone, and when she got bored of that, she grabbed my pen and broke it in half. Then Leo walked over and put his own pen in my hand without saying a word. I could still see the faces of those girls. They were so shocked, and I had no idea why he did it. I smiled to myself. "I think you're right. I should do this. Maybe he's starting to feel me, or maybe the universe is finally hearing my prayers." Raquel grabbed my shoulders and shook me. "Yes! Now you're speaking like the diva you are. Go clock those slim a*s bitches. You rock!" I laughed, and it felt so good, because I was happy to have someone like her on my side. She took my hand, and we walked into the party together. The place was packed and loud, with people dancing everywhere and lights flashing across the walls. Raquel pulled me through the crowd, then turned and looked at me. "Okay, now it's time. Go for him. He's over there." I turned around, and there he was, sitting in the VIP section with his arm on the back of the couch and the top of his shirt open. God, this man is so f*****g handsome! I looked at his jaw, his wide shoulders, and his big hands, and I wondered what it would feel like to be pulled against his chest. My whole body felt warm, and I had to look away for a second so I could breathe. My heart was already racing. What had broken my confidence the most was how people treated me in this school. Every time I went to the canteen to grab food or snacks, someone would say I belonged in the gym and not the canteen. Now I didn't even know where to find the confidence to walk up to him...but Raquel had given me the go-ahead, so maybe I could at least try. I started walking, and my heart was pounding. What if he laughed at me? What if he yelled at me? What if he pushed me away and everybody turned to look? My head was so full of thoughts that I bumped into a girl without seeing her, and she rolled her eyes and said, "Watch your way, egg roll!" I sighed. I had been called so many names in this school, and none of them were close to the name my mom gave me. I kept walking. Then my nerves got worse, because Leo wasn't sitting alone. His whole hockey team was with him, and everyone knew those guys were hard to deal with. But none of them had ever said anything mean to me before, so I told myself they were guys, and guys were probably not as cruel as girls. I kept going, and I swear I could hear a saxophone getting louder in my head, even though no saxophone was playing. When I got to them, I stopped and swallowed. This was my moment to speak, and I hated how dumb and empty my head felt, because I couldn't think of anything to say. The whole team started looking at me, except Leo. He was busy pressing his phone. I forced a smile. "Hi, Leo." One of the guys, Harrison, laughed. "I'm so sorry, baby girl, we've got no food here." Everyone started laughing, and I gulped. I was used to this, but why now? Why when I was finally trying to do something brave? My heart was beating so fast that I couldn't stop it, but I had come this far, and at least after tonight I would know where I stood with Leo. Leo lifted his head slowly and looked at me. A small smile curled his lips. "Hey, what's up?" "I came to..." I stammered, and I hated myself for it. I cleared my throat and took out the pen he gave me. "I came to return your pen and say thank you for helping me out earlier." He looked at the pen, then at me. "No, it's fine. You can take it. I don't need it." The guys started laughing again, and one of them, Logan, said, "Oh f**k, bro, she thought you were feeling her because you gave her a damn pen." They all burst out laughing, but Leo shook his head, stood up, and walked away. My heart dropped. I had come here for him, so why was he walking away from me? I turned quickly and said, "Oh, Leo..." He stopped, then turned around slowly and came back, so close that I could feel his breath on my face. There was almost no space between us, and my heart was going crazy. His eyes were so blue, and they looked right through me. His cologne was so strong that I knew I was dealing with a man, not just a boy. And his height, oh God, I had to look all the way up to see his face. I stared at him for a long time, then I swallowed and said, "I was thinking if..." Right then his phone buzzed. "Excuse me..." he said, and he opened it. That's when I noticed that a lot of people around us were looking at their phones too. I was confused, and then Leo looked up at me. "What the f**k?" he muttered. My eyes got wide. "What's wrong??" He rolled his eyes and walked off, and I stood there with my heart racing. What's happening? Did I do something crazy? Why was everyone looking at me? I looked around, and some people were whispering about me while the rest were laughing. I started walking fast, trying to find my way out. What the hell was happening? Not today, not tonight, not the first time I had ever found the courage to walk up to Leo. And the worst part was how he looked at me. It was pure disgust. I started looking for Raquel, and I found her standing with the IT girls. I walked up to her and whispered. "What is going on?" "Actually, Mara..." Raquel said, "the video of you and Leo, the edit you made showing how much you're into him, I think it went viral. People are sharing it in the chats about how obsessed you are with him." I blinked and blinked, and I stared at her for a long time. One of the IT girls, Jarvis, walked over. "Raquel, why the f**k are you explaining anything to this b***h? Let her swim in her delusions." Raquel swallowed and didn't say a word. "Raquel, did you actually leak my texts and videos to everyone here?" She blinked fast, and before she could answer, Jarvis grabbed her arm and dragged her away. I stood there hoping the ground would open up and swallow me. I grabbed my phone and opened it, and I saw everything: the video edits of me and Leo, the pictures I had drawn, even the little tattoo I made on my inner thigh for him. All the texts and poems I sent were out there for everyone to see. I had only shared them with Raquel, because she was my best friend and nobody knew how much I liked Leo except her. I couldn't believe my own roommate had stabbed me in the back....It meant she had planned this when she brought me here. I knew Raquel was obsessed with the IT girls, but I never thought she would use me to prove she deserved a place in their group. Tears dropped from my eyes, and I couldn't take it anymore. It felt like every person I looked at was laughing and pointing at me, so I ran out of the party. Outside it was dark, and the breeze was blowing softly on my wet face, but I didn't want to think about anything. I just ran and cried, because I couldn't do this. What was going on? Was it a crime to be the way I was? I kept running until I got to the road, and I didn't even look. A car was coming fast, and its light hit my face, and I just stopped. I didn't know what to do. The last thing I heard was the sound of the car crashing into me, and then everything went dark.
