Chapter 18: The Journey Begins

1256 Words
The four friends piled into the car, eager to start their journey to the Mind Stone. Lyra and Kael settled into the backseat, while Astrid and Cormac claimed the front seats. The car was filled with the delicious smell of pizza, and the sound of Astrid's favorite playlist filled the air. As Cormac started the engine, Astrid immediately began fiddling with the radio, searching for the perfect road trip playlist. She sang along to the music, her voice loud and off-key, causing Cormac to chuckle and shake his head. Cormac focused on navigating the winding roads that led out of Ashwood. The sun was setting, casting a golden glow over the landscape. The trees seemed to blur together as they drove by, their leaves rustling in the gentle breeze. In the backseat, Lyra turned to Kael with a curious expression. "Hey, Kael? Can I ask you something?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Kael looked at her with a hint of wariness, but nodded nonetheless. "What's up, Lyra?" he asked, his eyes locking onto hers. Lyra's eyes sparkled with curiosity. "Why did you come back to Ashwood? And why did you leave in the first place?" she asked, her voice filled with a sense of wonder. Kael's expression faltered for a moment, before he regained his composure. "I left because... my parents died," he said, his voice cracking slightly. "My aunt took me in, and we moved to... Willowdale." Lyra's eyes narrowed slightly, sensing that Kael was hiding something. But she didn't push the issue, instead offering a sympathetic smile. "Sorry about that, Kael," she said, her voice filled with compassion. "I don't even remember anything about my parents. The professor and Madam Eira brought me up, but they never explained exactly how my parents died. I never asked, either." Kael's expression softened, his eyes filled with compassion. "Well, I'm sure they were wonderful people, Lyra," he said, his voice filled with conviction. Lyra's gaze met Kael's, and for a moment, they just looked at each other. The air was filled with tension, but it was a good kind of tension. Lyra smiled, feeling a sense of connection with Kael that she couldn't quite explain. Meanwhile, in the front seats, Astrid and Cormac were engaged in a heated argument. "I saw it first!" Astrid exclaimed, her eyes fixed on the last pizza slice in the box. Cormac scoffed, his hands gripping the steering wheel tightly. "No way, Astrid! I called dibs on that slice hours ago!" he said, his voice filled with mock indignation. Astrid rolled her eyes, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "Oh, sure, Cormac. Because 'dibs' is a real thing," she said, her eyes sparkling with amusement. Cormac shot Astrid a mock-angry glance, but couldn't help chuckling. "Hey, it's a time-honored tradition!" he exclaimed, his eyes crinkling at the corners. As the argument continued, Lyra and Kael exchanged a amused glance. "I think we're in for a long ride," Lyra whispered, her eyes sparkling with mirth. Kael grinned, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "Definitely," he whispered back, his voice filled with amusement. The car continued down the winding road, the four friends laughing and arguing together as they journeyed deeper into the unknown. The sun dipped below the horizon, casting a dark shadow over the landscape. But the car was filled with light and laughter, and the four friends knew that they were in for an adventure of a lifetime. As Cormac navigated the winding road, the car's headlights illuminated the dense forest ahead. The trees seemed to stretch on forever, their branches creaking ominously in the gentle breeze. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the forest grew darker, the shadows deepening into menacing pools. "We're here," Cormac announced, his voice low and serious. "According to the map, we need to go further into the forest." Astrid nodded, her eyes scanning the map. "Yes, it looks like we have to walk from here." Kael nodded, his eyes gleaming with a mix of excitement and caution. "Let's park here, pack some supplies and weapons, and get ready to move." Lyra nodded, her heart racing with anticipation. The four of them piled out of the car, their torches casting flickering shadows on the trees. As they walked, the forest grew denser, the trees seeming to close in around them. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves. Lyra could feel eyes watching them, the hairs on the back of her neck standing on end. Suddenly, a twig snapped behind them. Lyra spun around, her torch casting a beam of light into the darkness. A pair of glowing eyes stared back at her, and Lyra's heart skipped a beat. "Valtorians," Kael growled, his eyes scanning the surrounding trees. Astrid drew her dagger, its blade glinting in the torchlight. "Let's get ready to fight." Cormac cracked his knuckles, his eyes flashing with a fierce light. "I'm ready to take them down." The Valtorians emerged from the shadows, their eyes blazing with an unnatural hunger. Lyra and her friends stood back-to-back, their torches casting a circle of light around them. The fight was intense, the Valtorians attacking with a ferocity that bordered on madness. Lyra and her friends fought hard, their movements swift and deadly. But they were outnumbered, and soon they found themselves on the defensive. In the chaos of the fight, Lyra felt a searing pain in her arm. She cried out, stumbling backward as a Valtorian sank his fangs into her flesh. But she didn't have time to react. The Valtorians were closing in, their eyes blazing with an unnatural hunger. Lyra knew they had to get out of there, fast. "Run!" Kael yelled, grabbing Lyra's arm and pulling her forward. The four of them sprinted through the forest, their torches casting wild shadows on the trees. They could hear the Valtorians behind them, their footsteps pounding the earth. Lyra's arm throbbed with pain, but she didn't dare look back. She knew that if they stopped, even for a moment, they would be overwhelmed. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, they emerged from the forest. Lyra stumbled forward, her eyes fixed on the sight before her. The trees parted to reveal a massive stone door, adorned with ancient carvings. The door was covered in dust and vines, and it looked like it hadn't been opened in centuries. Lyra's friends gathered around her, their eyes fixed on the door. For a moment, they just stared, their chests heaving with exhaustion. Then, without warning, the door slammed open, revealing a dark and foreboding passageway. Lyra felt a blast of cold air hit her, and she stumbled backward, her eyes fixed on the darkness within. "Whoa," Cormac breathed, his eyes wide with wonder. "I think we're meant to go in there." Lyra nodded, her heart racing with anticipation. She knew that they had to be brave, had to face whatever lay ahead. But as she stepped forward, she couldn't shake the feeling that they were walking into a trap. And she couldn't forget the pain in her arm, the feeling of the Valtorian's fangs sinking into her flesh. She didn't tell her friends, didn't want to worry them. But she knew that she had to be careful, had to watch her back. As they stepped into the passageway, Lyra felt a sense of trepidation wash over her. She knew that they were in for a wild ride, and she wasn't sure if they would all make it out alive.
