The four of them arrived at the old warehouse on 5th and Main, the designated meeting spot for their stakeout. Lyra, already in her werewolf form, paced back and forth in front of the building, her eyes scanning the surrounding area.
Astrid, spell book clutched in her hand, stood off to the side, watching Lyra with an amused expression. "Calm down, Lyra. We just got here."
Lyra shot her a look. "Of course they'll be late. It's not like they have anything better to do."
Just then, a large, wolf-like figure emerged from the shadows. Lyra's eyes narrowed. "So, you really are a big bad wolf that steals."
Cormac, in his wolf form, padded towards them, his tail wagging lazily behind him. "How could you tell?" he asked, his voice low and smooth.
Lyra rolled her eyes. "Blonde. Your fur is golden brown."
Cormac chuckled. "I could still be anyone."
Lyra snorted, but Astrid just giggled. Cormac padded over to her, his eyes locked on hers, and began to flirt shamelessly. Lyra watched for a moment, then shook her head and wandered off to find a better vantage point.
As she sat down on a nearby crate, Kael appeared beside her, his eyes fixed on her werewolf form. "Your fur glows differently in the moonlight," he said, his voice low and husky.
Lyra rolled her eyes. "I'm aware."
Kael chuckled. "Are you always like this to every man?"
Lyra's expression turned icy. "No, just the stupid ones."
Kael laughed, a low, throaty sound, and Lyra felt a shiver run down her spine. She quickly stood up and walked away, Kael following behind her.
As she approached Astrid and Cormac, who were still flirting shamelessly, Lyra raised an eyebrow. "Looks like someone's got a new admirer."
Astrid grinned, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "Jealous?"
Lyra snorted. "Please. I have better things to do than get caught up in Cormac's games."
Cormac, still in his wolf form, looked up at her with a mischievous glint in his eye. "We'll see about that," he said, his voice low and husky.
Lyra just rolled her eyes and turned away, Kael watching her with an interested expression. This was going to be a long night.
As they waited on their stakeout, the group fell silent, their eyes scanning the surrounding area for any signs of movement. Suddenly, the sound of howling wolves pierced the night air, and they all froze, their ears perked up.
"Shh," Cormac whispered, his eyes locked on the darkness beyond the bushes. "Let's follow them."
They crept quietly through the underbrush, their senses on high alert. Finally, they found a place to hide and listen in on the conversation of the wolves.
"...and humans, too," one of the wolves growled.
Astrid's eyes widened. "They must be vampires."
Lyra's expression turned determined. "We have to help the people in that house."
Kael's eyes narrowed. "Do you think you can take down three packs of wolves and a group of vampires?"
Lyra shook her head. "No, but we still have to do something."
As she attempted to stand up, Kael pulled her down firmly, bringing her close to him. Their eyes met, and for a moment, they just stared at each other, the tension between them palpable.
Lyra looked away, her eyes scanning the darkness. Suddenly, she gasped. "Look."
A group of vampires emerged from the shadows, carrying four citizens from Ashwood. Lyra's eyes widened in horror as the vampires removed the hearts from the victims, their bodies crumpling to the ground.
"They don't have the stone," one of the vampires sneered. "Let's proceed."
Astrid screamed, her hand flying to her mouth. Lyra covered her mouth, her eyes wide with horror.
The vampires' heads snapped up, their eyes scanning the darkness. "I heard something," one of them growled.
Kael's eyes locked onto Lyra's. "Let's leave. Now."
Lyra's eyes were wide with horror. "Why?" she whispered.
Kael's expression was grim. "We're vampires, Lyra. We can hear people from a very long distance."
Lyra's face fell. "So they killed those innocent people..."
Kael gave Cormac a look, and Cormac sprang into action. He swept Astrid up into his arms and took off at a sprint, his supernatural speed carrying them away from the scene.
Kael turned to Lyra, his eyes locking onto hers. "Hold on," he said, and then he scooped her up into his arms and took off after Cormac.
Lyra felt a rush of wind as Kael's supernatural speed carried them through the night. She buried her face in his chest, trying to process the horror of what they had just witnessed.
As they ran, Lyra felt Kael's heart beating steadily beneath her ear. It was a strange comfort, but it was something, and she held onto it as they sped through the darkness.t
