Before Meeting the Young Miss
A ray of light shone and illuminated the insides of a dimly lit room. With the light coming from behind the covers of the curtains on the window, the things within the room could now clearly be seen. It was a simple room with a closet, a table, and a bed. On that bed, lay a figure covered in a blanket, it squirmed around trying to get into a comfortable position, but the moment the ray of light shone through the blanket, the figure stopped squirming and decided to sit up. The figure could now clearly be seen. It was a young boy; his age could clearly be seen to be about 6–7 years old. His hair was black-a typical color in the world. His facial features could be said to be good, without any blemishes or scars. He had slightly lighter toned skin. The boy yawned and as he opened his eyes... his eyes, on the other hand, seemed out of the ordinary. It was the color of gray. If one were to look, one would think that he was blind, but it seemed like he could clearly see as he stood up and started looking for clothes in his closet before deciding on a certain pair of shirts and shorts and underwear. A white shirt, black shorts and underwear. They were not luxurious clothing per se, but those made from the cheapest of fabrics. Normal sheep wools. Just by the standard of the clothes he wore, one could easily understand his financial status. The boy, after finding clothes, opened the door to his room and went to the right corner where their bathroom was located. Five minutes later, the boy went down the living room, all freshened up for the morning. "Good morning, mom!" the boy said the moment he saw his mother in the kitchen preparing their meals. "Good morning, Kai, you're early, as usual. Are you going there again?" His mother, Letisha, asked. She's a beautiful woman in her late twenties, she had chestnut-colored hair that reached to her back and she had dark-brown eyes. "Uhm! I heard that a group of Adventurers is returning from their Missions. I want to hear their stories!" the boy said. He was jumping up and down in excitement as he imagined the great tale of the Adventurers. Adventurers, it was a title that many aspired to have. It was a title given to those hunters who had managed to pass the exam of the Adventurers Guild and became part of it. It was a job full of risk as well as profit. The more dangerous the mission, the higher the reward. Thus, many wanted to become one. Mostly youths from villages and towns with a high number of Adventurers. Letisha, seeing her son so giddy, couldn't help but shake her head. She smiled and said, "You and your stories. Why don't you try playing with Eunice and the other kids your age? Wouldn't that be more fun?" "Hmmm... I thought and tried it once, but I think listening to the stories of those Adventurers is much better!" Letisha once again shook her head, helpless. She had tried to make her son play with other kids, but it ended up being total chaos. Just as they were playing, and she was talking with other mothers, her son disappeared, and they had a hard time finding him. Until someone came and said that they had seen him in the taverns, talking with those Adventurers, laughing and exclaiming in wonder and excitement. They had to scold him afterward for not notifying them about where he had disappeared. Thus, every day, Letisha had the job of asking her son where he would run off to. So that she could pick him up. "Do you want to be an Adventurer as well?" Letisha asked as she put the meal on the table. She had already finished cooking and decided to chat with her son. "Me?" Kai pointed to himself; Letisha nodded. But Kai shook his head. "I don't want to be an Adventurer," he said, casual as it may sound, in Letisha's ear it sounded as if the title of an Adventurer was of no significant matter to him. "You don't?" Letisha asked. Clearly surprised by her son's answer. All her son talked about were the stories of those Adventurers, so she was sure that he wanted to be like them. He even interacted with them a lot, making him a regular in the Taverns where Adventurers had their meals. "Then why do you always go to that tavern?" Letisha really couldn't understand why, if it were not about going there and learning from those Adventurers so he could become one someday? Why else would her son go there? "Didn't I say it earlier?" Kai asked, seemingly confused, but he continued with a bright smile, "I want to hear their stories!" Letisha was confused, question marks seemingly appeared on top of her head wanting to ask something, but she held herself back as she saw her son's smile. If she could count the times her son smiled this brightly, she wouldn't need to use a second hand. It was rare for her son to smile like this, it was as if he really loved listening to the stories of those Adventurers. '...or maybe not just those Adventurers'.' She thought as she remembered those days she told stories to her son to make him fall asleep. It was those times when her son couldn't sleep due to the bullying caused by the other kids due to his eyes, his eyes that she couldn't help but question why it appeared on him. It was just a regular pair of eyes, but the difference with the others made him a target for bullying, especially from those older ones. It was only this year that her son managed to overcome those troubles and managed to sleep on his own now. But maybe it was also the start of his love for listening to stories. When Letisha thought of this, she smiled warmly at her son. No matter what her son wanted to be or do, she would do everything she had to support him. Like his mother, she would protect him even at the cost of her life, just so he could pursue what he wanted. "I see. You really love those stories of yours, huh?" She said, smiling as she picked him up and putting him on her lap as she tickled him. "Haha! Hahahah! Mom! Stop! Heheheh! Yes, it was thanks to Mom that I came to love them after all! Hehehe!" Laughing, the mother and son spent their time playing around. *Cling* Clang* (sounds of chimes) The sounds of chimes were heard, prompting the mother and son to look at the door. There stood a handsome man not more than thirty, wearing a regular brown leather shirt and leather pants. He had black hair and slightly light toned skin. He gazed at the table where the food was set up and the mother and son before a smile crept up to his lips, "I'm home!" Letisha and her son froze, they looked at him with eyes wide and trembling lips. The man seeing their reaction, spread both his hands to the side and said with a smile, "Could I get a hug?" The moment he said so, Letisha rushed towards him, her son in hand, and hugged the man. "Welcome back, Harold dear." She said, slightly sobbing. "Why the tears? I came back safe and sound, didn't I? Come on, stop crying," Harold said as he wiped the tears from his wife's face, but his voice was quivering as well as tears began to fall from his eyes as well. "I miss you both," he said, putting Letisha and their son in his tight embrace. "I miss you too," Letisha replied. Hugging him tight. Their son hugged both of them as well. He was not clueless as to what was happening. After all, this was not the first time his father came back from war. His father is one of the captains in the Duke's army. Most of the year they would roam around the territory with the previous Duke and fight those invading bordering kingdoms. So only during this time of the year would they return and be replaced by another batch of soldiers. The previous Duke, on the other hand, would remain on the field. Only the soldiers would be rotated so that they could spend their time with their families and resupply as well. Otherwise, if they couldn't protect the border, the territories within the current Duke's control would be invaded and looted. This was explained to him by his father when he once asked for him to stay. Thus, he knew his father could only stay for a short time before going back to the field full of dangers. He also asked his father to tell the stories of the things that happened on the battlefield, but Harold refused without even considering it. His son was only a mere 5 years old. How can he let his son be influenced by the darkest side of humanity? He just wanted him to play and spend his time as a child. And when he grew up, maybe at that time he could tell him and at that time, he would prevent his son from being an Adventurer or a Soldier. After all he knew how smart his son was, he could become a scholar instead!
