“What?!” The words hit Lucian like a thunderbolt. His eyes went wide like saucers and he swallowed rapidly, not knowing how else to express his shock.
“An…arranged marriage? How am I supposed to marry somebody I don't know?” He shook his head. “I'm only 22 and too young for marriage. Not now,”
Lucian stared at Rowan, half expecting him to smile and say this was all a joke, but the elderly’s man face was as grim as anything.
“I understand this might be overwhelming to you, but your father's wish is for you to get married to the woman of his choice. This would give you an added advantage in the financial world. You see, planned marriages like this cannot be avoided, especially among the wealthy,"
Lucian scoffed. “Ridiculous! Why do you keep bothering me about a father who never cared if I died or not? Make it make sense. Why would my father do this to me? How could he stoop so low? Is it not enough that he abandoned me? Why make decisions for me too?!”
With a scoff, Lucian stood up and headed towards the door. “I shouldn't have bothered going through the trouble of coming here. Give the wealth to charity,”
“Your father died of cancer a year after you were kidn*pped,” Rowan revealed.
Lucian froze.
“He insisted on picking you up from school that day, but a tragedy happened that shattered the entire family," Rowan's voice was heavy with sorrow like the incident happened yesterday. “The car brakes failed leading to a fatal accident. When the paramedics arrived, you were nowhere to be found,”
Rowan coughed to hide his tears. “We employed the best trackers to search for you but it was futile. It was like you vanished into thin air. Your father continuously blamed himself for failing to protect you,”
“He died from cancer a year later, and your emotionally traumatized mum joined him after a month,” Rowan completed.
Lucian felt something warm trickle down his cheeks and when he touched it, they were tears. His tears. His parents didn't abandon him like he had thought. They cared for him to their death.
His chest squeezed in pain. He wished his parents were alive. Why did they have to die in such a cruel manner without spending enough time with him?
“Your parents didn't abandon you, young master. If anything, they were so fond of you,” Rowan said.
“I'd…like to see a picture of them,” Lucian sniffed back tears as he collapsed into the empty chair.
“I did a background check on you and realized how cruelly you were mistreated and humiliated by everyone. Not anymore, young master. It's time to step into abundant wealth and make those who looked down on you regret it,”
Lucian nodded. Rowan was right. The thought of leaving his father's wealth to someone's else didn't sit well with him. “Okay, I agree to the condition,”
Rowan smiled lightly and passed him the document, which he read first before signing. “Congratulations, young master. You're now the heir of President Milan's wealth. Your first goal should be to increase the wealth and expand even more. Make your parents proud because you have their blood flowing through your veins,”
Lucian nodded, even though his body shook with shock. He still couldn't believe what was happening. A rags-to-riches story in reality? Pfft… It seemed so surreal. So profound that he almost couldn't control his excitement.
As if on cue, his gaze shifted to his wristwatch and he stood up quickly with a gasp. “I have a physiology quiz right now. I have to go,"
Rowan stood up too. “Please allow me to arrange a car to take you back to school,”
“No, don't bother. I'll be fine,” Lucian smiled, and with that, he let himself out of the door towards the elevator. However, as he approached the gate of the company, he saw a mini crowd already gathered at the entrance. They seemed to be arguing over something.
“Is something going on?” He muttered to himself as he walked faster.
“That's the bastard coming! There he is, catch him!” A feminine voice screamed.
A closer look and Lucian saw the woman from earlier standing with several security guards. The front desk lady was also standing there, hands on hips, looking like the perfect villainess.
“You again?” Lucian frowned. Gosh, he had never seen such a grumpy person in his entire life. “Must you stoop this low?”
“Did you really think you could escape after what you did?” The woman sneered. “I'll teach you a bitter lesson for attempting to run,”
“It was clearly a mistake!” Lucian emphasized calmly, even though all he wanted to do was throw this woman out of his sight. “You don't have to be this unreasonable,”
The woman chuckled in disbelief. “Unreasonable? Did a poor rat like you just call me unreasonable?”
“Is there a better word to describe your shabby attitude?” Lucian countered.
“There's only one way I'm letting you off,” The woman smacked her lips. “Apologize to me and everybody gathered here for causing a scene. Not only that, admit that you're a rogue who came to steal in this company,”
“What?!” Lucian was astonished. This woman was asking him to apologize in front of his workers? Ridiculous! A rogue? How can the owner of a company be a rogue?
He couldn't help but chuckle.
“You won't? How about I involve the police?” She placed a thoughtful hand on her chin. “Hmm… I wonder how much I should charge for compensation. $50? $100? $500? Can you afford it? Why not kneel and beg while I'm being generous?”
“Why don't we wait and see who'll end up kneeling to the other person,” Lucian replied with an intimidating gaze. “As I said, send me your details and I'll forward compensation to you. No need for all this drama,”
“You sly jerk! How can you be so cocky?!” The woman raged, about to slap Lucian when a strong pair of hands stopped hers midair. Looking up, she stared into the furious eyes of Rowan.
“How dare you try to hit the young master?!”
