Chapter 1: The Invitation
Elara Nightingale had always been invisible in her own home. While her older sister, Selene, dazzled with beauty, charm, and effortless skill, Elara quietly lingered in the background, long hair often tangled, mind constantly wandering. Today, however, the air smelled different. There was…possibility.
It began with a letter. Not one of the usual bills or boring school notices, but a thick envelope sealed with deep violet wax, stamped with an intricate crown.
Elara’s fingers trembled as she broke the seal. The script inside seemed to shimmer under the sunlight:
"You are invited to the Kingdom of Veyloria, to participate in the Court of Rising Stars. Your presence is requested at once. The Crown awaits those with courage, wit, and spirit."
She blinked.
Veyloria? Court of Rising Stars? Crown? Her imagination ran wild. Surely it was a joke—some elaborate prank her sister would find amusing. But…something about the elegant handwriting, the faint scent of lavender, and the subtle hum of magic in the air told her it was real.
By nightfall, she had packed lightly, her mind bouncing between excitement and anxiety. What if she failed? What if she made a fool of herself in a world of nobles, knights, and…magic?
The next morning, a carriage, sleek and dark as midnight, waited at the edge of the estate. Its driver, a tall man with silver hair and eyes like molten gold, tipped his hat and said only:
"Veyloria awaits, Miss Nightingale. Hold fast to your wits."
As the wheels clattered over cobblestones, Elara peered out the window. Forests stretched endlessly, their trees whispering secrets in the wind. And somewhere deep in the distance, the spires of a castle glittered against the sun.
A laugh bubbled from her lips. She didn’t know what awaited her—but for the first time, she felt alive.
And then, from the corner of the carriage, a shadowy figure appeared—a boy roughly her age, dark hair falling over piercing green eyes. He smiled, one side of his mouth curling mischievously.
"You’re the new girl, aren’t you?" he asked.
Elara swallowed. So this is the first challenge, she thought. Charm, intrigue, or trouble?
Little did she know…this boy was only the beginning of a tangle that would soon pull her heart—and loyalties—in more directions than she could imagine.
