“If I die I will take you with me.” I said to Midnight and he chuckled. This guy would kill me. I could feel that as I saw down my window the hard ground. If this was my end... I want to be written in my grave that I was an amazing girl. What? It would be cool.
“Don’t worry Ry, I’m here. If you fall, I will catch you.” Midnight placed his hand on my shoulder. I felt my cheeks blushing, but couldn’t help and feel safe as he said those words. There was something about him that made me feel like that.
“I will wait for you outside. Be careful. Okay?” I smiled at him as his voice sounded worried. He was worried about me. That warmed up my heart. My blood ran cold when I saw him leaning outside the window till he disappeared outside it. I looked under me window to see if he was fine. Midnight gave me a sheepish smile as I shook my head to him.
Now it was my turn.
The window wasn’t that high from the ground, but still high enough to break a leg or something else. So I should be very, very careful. “Use the tub over there.” Midnight whispered yelled at me, pointing at the tub that was not far from my window. It was the tub that came from the roof for the rain.
I eyed it up till I decided it was strong enough to don’t make me fall in ground like a rock. Just imaging my head hitting the strong ground, gave me a headache. But if Midnight had done this all of those times then I could do it too. I trusted him.
With shaky hands, even though I tried to control my fear, I weighted all my body on the tub, leaving the safe floor of my window... well the edge of my window. Anyway... For some moments I felt like Spider-man, but then my foot slipped and a low scream left my lips. But just like he promised, Midnight caught me in his strong arms with a smirk in his face. “Just like I said. I will catch you.”
A smile escaped my lips. And that’s when I noticed the mask on his face. The hell. “What is that?” I pointed at the mask.
Midnight put me down on the ground and took out of his back pocket what looked like an other mask. He handed it to me with a silly proud smile in his face. So this was his idea. Let’s have a mask adventure like we are in the freaking the Arrow series. Not that I’m complaining about the TV show, since I love it, but this was kind of ridiculous. In the show, Oliver makes it look cool and all, but in real life I felt silly. Like someone was forcing me to do something embarrassing.
“Seriously?” I said as I looked up to Midnight. Even though the lamppost from the street lighted up all his body, his hoodie would still cover the half of his face. Lucky bastard!
“Dead seriously.” He grinned and I chuckled at him. That made his grin became bigger, but shook it away and waited for me to put on the simple black mask.
“Why am I wearing a mask?” I asked as I fixed my hair to don’t stick in different weird ankles and make me look even stupider. Midnight smirked at me and shrugged carelessly. I took a look of his outfit. He was wearing dark blue jeans and a black hoodie that was like his signature.
“For two reasons.” His eyes were looking away from me. I didn’t help but looked at him waiting for him to continue. “To look cool and... Because I don’t want be the only one with the face covered. For once I want us to be equal.” I smiled at the way he said it. In his voice I could recognize how much he wanted me to tell me who he was, how much he wanted to be just free around me and not trying to hide his face from me the whole time.
Midnight grabbed my hand and pulled me down the road. I was still with the clothes I was in school, since I fell asleep on them. But it was better than going out with pyjamas. Even though that would be a great story to tell to your friends or even your grandchildren. Imagine this. You are old and all, sitting around the fireplace with your grandchildren and tell them how you once sneaked out of your room in the middle of the night with a stranger, in your pyjamas.
“Where are we going?” I asked him curios trying to ignore the fact that he hadn’t let go of my hand. It wasn’t something I should worry about right? Right? Right. I’m glad we made that clear. Midnight didn’t turn his head to me, but I could sense the smirk on his face.
“I will show you the life everyone misses during night.” His voice was soft and I felt a smile on my face.
“The Midnight’s life.” I muttered loud enough for him to hear me. A chuckle filled the silent atmosphere of the night. I couldn’t help the urge on me to look up the sky. The love I had for it, was so big, so endless, like itself. Maybe this was one of the reasons why I wasn’t scared of the stranger entering my room every night. Because I named him Midnight. And every time I thought about him, I couldn’t help and imagine the night sky and all of those stars. Instead of imagining him scary and dark... I imagined the sky on his eyes and the dreams of a life time in his lips... Stupid I know, but this was me. The silly girl who let a stranger in her room. And made that mistake every night, not regretting it for once.
As we walked in silence I notice how we were walking into the centre of the city. The one with high buildings and hundreds of lights, lightning up the place. I haven’t been here many times, but even when I came here it was during the day. But during night... It was an other story. It was a fairy tale. The stars faded away as we walked more and more in the centre of the city. That saddened me a little, but not that much to ruin the whole thing.
Midnight let go of my hand and faced with me. His lips had formed a straight line, which made me think he was serious. “Promise me you won’t leave me Ryder. That no matter what, you will spend this night with me.” I noticed sadness in his tone, which made my heart break. There was this feeling that let me think that his words had a deeper meaning, but either way, I nodded and gave him a sincere smile.
“I won’t leave you, if you don’t leave me.” He nodded and the smile came back to his lips, turning slowly into a smirk.
“Be prepared to see what I have never showed to anyone, little Ry.”
And just like that we had a deal. Everything was mutual in this relationship. It was a weird friendship I know... But it looked like the weirdness had fall in love with me... And I was slowly loving it back.
***
Every single person in the street would look at me and Midnight in a weird way. I couldn’t blame them though. In the beginning I felt uncomfortable, and looked like Midnight noticed it, and took my hand in his in a comforting way. After that I grew some confidence and now I felt like laughing every time someone would look at me like I came from Mars.
Midnight dragged me in an empty alley and I can’t deny it that for a second I felt scared. But he was Midnight. I remembered how safe I felt with him and that fear faded away slowly.
He pulled me to the side of the wall. When we were close enough I noticed the dark door, which disappeared in the darkness. Midnight opened the door and we walked in. It was an empty long hallway, lighted up by only some faint lights. The place looked old and the yellow colour of the lights made it look even more old and ugly. In the end of the hallway were some stairs that lead us towards a door that looked like the door of a basement.
“Relax Ry. This night is ours.” And with that said he opened the door.
My breath caught short on my throat as I lost my ability to talk. The music filled the air. It was rock and from what I recognised it was Fall Out Boy “This ain’t a scene, its an arms race”. Yeah I listen that kind if music. The whole place changed colour from the many lights, making it look wonderful. Everything was so colourful. Even the people on the dance floor. Their bodies covered with paint of different colours, moved in the sync with the music. The paint came from the ceiling. There were some kind of tubs pouring paint everywhere like rain.
Before I could let out the breath I didn’t notice I was holding, Midnight grabbed my hand and pulled me to the dance floor. As soon as I stepped inside the place, I felt the paint wetting my clothes and hair. The smirk played playfully in Midnight’s lips.
His hand felt warm and now wet too from the paint. But for some reasons I found myself amused at his look covered with paint. I could notice the red and blue pain in his chin and every other possible paint colour all over him. Even pink. He removed his hoodie from his head as the black mask came in view. His hair mixed with the colours of the lights. The eyes too. But looking his face, taking in every inch of it, I couldn’t stop and think that he was handsome. Even though the mask covered the half of his face, this was the only time when I could see more of his face than ever. Feeling hypnotized... like I wasn’t able to think anymore, with the music and the bodies dyed in paint dancing around us, all I could see and care was his face.
I felt his hand placing on my hip and pulling me closer to him. “Do you want to dance with me Little Ry?” His voice whispered in my ear, sending shivers all over my body. Knowing that my voice would come out weak, I just nodded not even having any idea what did he say. Now my hair was stuck on my face and neck and I was sure it wasn’t brown anymore. But I didn’t care. For some reasons... All I cared about was the fact that I was with him.
Soon both of his hands were on my hips as he moved slowly dancing with the music which changed into Nick Jonas ft Tove Lo “Close”. The music was slow, but not the romantic kind of slow. It was just perfect. Midnight pressed our bodies together and I could feel his abs and hard chest pressed against me. Without noticing it I was moving with him too. All I could hear was the music... All I could think was his body pressed against mine... All I could see was his face... His eyes, his lips...
I had forgot the rest of the world.
His face came closer to me and stopped when his lips brushed against the skin of my neck. I felt his lips going up slowly to my ear, barely touching me, making me feel strange and all. “Do you like my world Ryder?” His breath caused me goosebumps. My whole body felt weak under his smooth voice and his warm breath touching my skin.
I nodded again, and I felt his lips touching my neck lightly. I felt his smirk on my neck. That made my legs feeling weak and almost falling, if it wasn’t for his arms around my waist. “The mask looks good on you.” Midnight said. Now, I was so hypnotized to blush. It was like my mind had lost somewhere on the roads. Like I had left it out of here.
The music changed again and it was a slow one too, which I knew would drive me crazy if I kept staying so close to him like this. I have never been so close to a guy on my life before. This was so unnatural for me. It was alien to me.
Our bodies moved to the music again. His arms were wrapped around my waist as mine around his neck. I stared at his eyes as the music fastened. The desire to see their real colour burned inside me. It was strong. The curiosity was killing me. So slowly it was painful.
Not noticing it, we were practically hugging each other. Our wet clothes were pressed against our bodies as every inch of us was a mixture of a messy rainbow. I got so lost in the music and so deep in his eyes which were glued to me, that I didn’t noticed the song changing into a fast one.
We danced for what looked to me like an eternity. It looked like I lost the sense of time when I was with him. I would forget about everything. Nothing mattered. Because the time I spent with him, was something I couldn’t replace with anything else. I was me... just me when I was with him.
After the song “I’m so sorry” from Imagine Dragons, finished, Midnight pulled me out of the room, back in the ugly hallway. We were both smiling widely, our bodies covered with paint. His hair was blue, purple, red, and every other colour. And I was sure mine looked the same as well. Once again I couldn’t tell his real hair colour. My eyes went to his eyes.
But before I could notice their colour, he put on his hoodie with a smirk on his lips. “Nasty!” He said and I blushed, feeling thankfully for the big amount of paint on my face to cover it up. “Come on.”
He took my hand again and we walked out of the building. Once again we were on the streets looking more weird then before, all covered with paint, but I liked it this way. We were weird together. Not caring about anything and anyone. It felt good actually.
I looked at the watch on my hand. Well I had to wipe away the paint from it before. It was like four a.m. My eyes widened at that and I stopped walking. Midnight turned to see me confused. “What’s wrong?” He asked and it almost pained to answer him.
“I have to go home.” I whispers and his lips formed a frown. The last thing I wanted to do was to go back in my boring room. I wanted to stay here with him. To go where he would take me. But it was the time to go back to reality. The night was over.
The first sunshine fell on the city proving my words. Midnight noticed it and frowned even more. Just like me, he didn’t want this night to be over. But like every beautiful thing, it ended.
“We can come here again an other time.” I said hopefully he would agree to bring me back to that club, which name was, the Dream. Weirdly it fit to it perfectly. I felt like Alice in Wonderland in there.
Midnight gave me a smile. “Every time you want little Ry.”
We walked to my house as fast as we could before the sun would rise and shine completely. When we were in front of my house, Midnight stopped and gave me a sheepish smile. “Goodbye!” Placing a fast kiss on my cheek covered with paint, he left, leaving me blushing for a few moments, till I remembered I had to get in my room. Awkwardly and in the most weird way, I made it to get in my room, with the help of the tub, even though I felt like one of those girls dancing against the tub a few times, but tried to ignore my wild imagination.
Once I was in my room, I took off my clothes and went in my bathroom to take a bath. While the warm water fell down my body, washing the paint off me, I couldn’t help the smile on my face.
This was the best night of my life.
