CHAPTER 1: THE REJECTION
The bond snapped into place the moment Fenrir Blackwood looked at me. I felt it in my chest first — a warm, electric thread pulling taut between us, stretching across the crowded pack hall until it found him standing at the head of the room. His eyes widened. His jaw tightened. Every wolf in the hall went silent, because every wolf in the hall knew what that look meant. Mate. I'd waited twenty-two years for this moment. I'd imagined it a hundred different ways — his hand reaching for mine, his voice breaking on my name, the whole pack howling in celebration. I had never once imagined what actually happened next. Fenrir looked away. "Alpha?" I said, and I hated how small my voice sounded in a room built for wolves twice my size. He didn't answer right away. His hands curled into fists at his sides, and something moved behind his eyes — not disgust, not indifference, but fear. I'd never seen Fenrir Blackwood afraid of anything. "I reject you, Ariella Wolfe," he said. "As my mate, and as Luna of this pack." The words hit before the meaning did. For a moment I just stood there, waiting for the room to make sense again. Then the whispers started — pity from some, satisfaction from others, because there were plenty of wolves in this hall who'd never wanted an outsider's daughter standing at the Alpha's side. I didn't cry. I promised myself that on the walk to the hall, before I even knew I'd need the promise, and I kept it. I lifted my chin and looked at the male who was supposed to be my forever, and I asked the only question that mattered. "Why?" Fenrir's throat worked like the answer was choking him on its way out. "There are things you don't understand. A prophecy tied to this bond — one I won't let come true. Not with you. Not with anyone." He finally looked at me again, and for one unguarded second I saw something that might have been grief. "This isn't about what I want, Ariella. It's about what I can't allow to happen." "That's not an answer," I said. "That's an excuse." He didn't argue. He just turned and walked out of the hall, and the bond in my chest didn't break so much as it tore, one thread at a time, in front of everyone I'd ever known. I made it exactly eleven steps toward the door before my legs remembered how to shake. Nobody stopped me from leaving the territory. That told me everything about where I stood now — not pack, not outsider, just a walking reminder of an Alpha's failure that everyone would rather forget existed. I walked until the borders blurred, until the trees stopped feeling like Blackwood land and started feeling like no one's land at all, and I didn't stop until a voice cut through the dark. "You're bleeding pack magic all over my territory." I spun. A wolf the size of a small horse stood between the trees, shifting into a man before I could brace myself — tall, dark-eyed, watching me with the kind of focus that felt like being catalogued rather than seen. "Draven," I said. Every wolf in three territories knew that name. Alpha of the Ashwood pack. Fenrir's oldest rival, and by most accounts, his enemy. "You know me." He tilted his head, something sharpening in his expression. "And I know you. Word travels fast when an Alpha rejects his mate in front of his whole pack." His mouth curved, not unkindly, but not warmly either — calculating. "That's an interesting mess to walk out of your territory tonight, Ariella Wolfe." "If you're here to gloat, save it. I'm not in the mood." "I'm not here to gloat." He stepped closer, and I made myself hold still, refusing to give him the satisfaction of flinching. "I'm here because Fenrir Blackwood just handed me something he's going to regret losing. A rejected Luna with Wolfe bloodline in her veins, cast out and furious, standing at my border at midnight." His eyes gleamed. "You have no idea what that's worth to me." "I'm not a weapon," I said. "And I'm not interested in being anyone's revenge plan — his or yours." "No," Draven agreed, and something in his voice shifted, quieter now, less performance and more honesty than I expected from him. "But you might be interested in an offer. Protection. Standing. A pack that won't throw you away over a prophecy you had no part in writing." He held out a hand. "Or you can keep walking into the dark alone and see how far that gets you." I looked at his hand. I looked at the border behind me, where Fenrir's territory ended and mine had just stopped existing. And somewhere in my chest, where a mate bond used to be, something colder and sharper was starting to take its place. "One condition," I said. "You tell me the truth about why you actually want me here. Not the pretty version." Draven's smile turned into something real. "Careful, little wolf. I might actually respect you." I didn't take his hand. Not yet. But I didn't walk away either.
