The Princess They Rejected

Thunder shook the Kingdom of Valeria. Rain poured heavily over the Royal Palace Hospital as nurses rushed through the corridors. Tonight was supposed to be the happiest night in the kingdom. The Queen was giving birth. For months, the entire kingdom had been waiting for the arrival of the royal baby. Flags had been placed across the capital, celebrations had been prepared, and thousands of citizens were praying for a healthy child. Inside the royal delivery room, Queen Isabella cried out in pain. "Your Majesty, just a little more!" King Alexander stood outside the room, pacing nervously. He was the most powerful man in the kingdom, but tonight he was helpless. All he could do was wait. Then— A baby's cry filled the hospital. The King froze. The door opened. "Congratulations, Your Majesty." The doctor smiled. "You have a daughter." Alexander's eyes filled with tears. "A daughter?" "Yes. A beautiful, healthy baby girl." The King hurried into the room. There, Queen Isabella held the tiny baby against her chest. "My little princess," she whispered. Alexander sat beside his wife and gently touched his daughter's cheek. "Our family is complete." The Queen smiled. But neither of them knew that their happiness would not last. Only a few rooms away, another woman had just given birth. Her name was Mara. She had served the royal family for years. Unlike the Queen, Mara had no wealth, no title and no influence. She had always watched the royal family from a distance. But tonight, something inside her changed. A nurse entered her room. "Congratulations. You also have a baby girl." Mara stared at her newborn daughter. Then she looked toward the door. She could hear the sounds of celebration coming from the royal wing. The King had a daughter. A princess. Mara's eyes became cold. "Why should her daughter have everything?" The nurse looked at her strangely. "What?" Mara immediately smiled. "Nothing." But she wasn't thinking about nothing. She was thinking about her daughter's future. She was thinking about the palace. The expensive clothes. The servants. The power. The crown. And then a terrible thought entered her mind. What if her daughter could have it all? Later that night, the hospital became unusually quiet. Most of the nurses were busy attending to the Queen. Mara slowly got out of bed. She wrapped her daughter in a blanket and walked toward the nursery. Her heart was beating wildly. She opened the door. Two babies were sleeping peacefully. One was the Queen's daughter. The other was Mara's. Mara stared at them for several seconds. She knew what she was about to do was wrong. But jealousy had already destroyed her conscience. She picked up the Queen's baby. Then she placed her own daughter inside the royal baby's crib. She looked down at the baby in her arms. "You will never know how lucky you are." She whispered, "From tonight, you are my daughter." Then she looked at the baby sleeping in the crib. "And you..." Mara's lips curved into a smile. "You will become a princess." She walked away. No one saw her. No one stopped her. And no one knew that the two babies had been switched. Hours later, the Queen held Mara's daughter in her arms. "My precious Celeste." The King smiled proudly. "Princess Celeste." Across the hospital, Mara looked at the real princess. She gave her a new name. "Amara." The baby began to cry. Mara frowned. "Stop crying." She wrapped her tightly in an old blanket. "You were supposed to give my daughter your life." She turned away. "You'll just have to live with the consequences." Eighteen years later, that little baby would return to the palace. But she wouldn't return as a servant. She would return as the rightful princess. And the people who had hated her most... Would finally discover who she really was. But by then, it might already be too late.
