Chapter Fifteen Something in the DarkThe sound of explosions carried on for some time. Kalin suggested that possibly some of the castle soldiers might have refused to lay down their refells and surrender. They might not believe the governor was gone. Akra agreed. Eventually, the tremors stopped.
Mai called to Long over and over. Kalin too. Akra tried to find him with his thoughtbanking. But they heard nothing.
‘What if Amual took him away too?’ Mai began to cry. ‘It’s all my fault. I should never have been selected for the pilgrimage.’
Kalin took hold of her hand. ‘We’ll find him. Wherever she’s taken him.’
Mai dried her tears with her sleeve. ‘You promise?’
‘We promise,’ Akra said, smiling. ‘Now, let’s keep trying to find them.’
And then her eyes brightened. ‘Can you hear that?’
