Somapala was stunned. The young woman standing before him, wearing a white dress, was the same mysterious girl he had seen earlier. However, she no longer appeared as beautiful as before. Blood poured from the corners of her mouth, staining her white dress with dark red spots. Hovering above the ground, the ghostly girl approached Somapala, who screamed in terror.
As he tried to flee, Somapala realized he was too late. His body felt paralyzed, unable to move even an inch. He tried to scream, but no sound came out. A cold, invisible force seemed to hold him in place. Helpless and terrified, he watched as the ghostly girl drew closer, her eyes filled with a hatred that pierced his soul. Suddenly, she grabbed his neck with icy hands and laughed maniacally.
Her grip tightened, and Somapala could feel the unbearable cold seeping into his skin. The force was beyond anything a living person could muster. Despite his struggles, he couldn’t break free. Then, the girl spoke, her voice filled with rage and pain.
“Do you remember me? You and your friends destroyed me. You killed me. Do you remember? Tell me, do you remember, you scoundrel?”
Her grip tightened further, and Somapala’s memories came flooding back, transporting him twenty-one years into the past. He was a twenty-one-year-old from a poor family, known in his village as a mischievous and troublesome young man. He had never been serious about his studies and was infamous for his misdeeds. Despite his reputation, many young women in the village had fallen for his charms, though he had never truly loved any of them. His interest in women was purely lustful.
Among those women was Amanda, the only daughter of Solomon Loku Hamuduruwo, a wealthy landowner. At eighteen, Amanda was the most beautiful girl in the village, with flowing hair, a fair complexion, and a figure that turned heads. Despite her wealth, she was kind-hearted and humble. Somapala’s feelings for her were not love but lust. However, fearing Solomon Loku Hamuduruwo, he never dared approach her.
One evening, around 6 PM, despite the dim light, Somapala with his friends Gunapala and suriyadasa were wandering near a small stream that ran below Solomon’s estate. They were heavily intoxicated. Although the stream was not off-limits to the villagers, it was rarely frequented because a larger stream was available nearby. Hence, the area was usually deserted. As they walked, they saw Amanda bathing in the stream. She wore only a bathing cloth, which clung to her body, making her look even more beautiful.
Amanda, who was unaware of their presence, was enjoying herself in the water. The sight of her stirred cruel desires in the intoxicated minds of Somapala, suriyadasa, and Gunapala. They approached her silently from the side, hidden by the darkness. Suddenly, they pounced on her, covering her mouth before she could understand what was happening. Amanda tried to scream and fight back, but she was overpowered and dragged into the nearby forest.
Despite her desperate struggles and cries for help, there was no one around to hear her. The three men brutally assaulted her, fulfilling their lustful desires while she screamed in pain. After what seemed like hours, they finally stopped. Amanda lay unconscious, and the men realized that if she regained consciousness, she would reveal their crime.
In a panic, they decided to kill her. They left her there and quickly fetched a shovel and pickaxe from Somapala’s house. Returning to the forest, they dug a hole and buried Amanda alive, despite her regaining consciousness and begging for mercy. Her last words echoed in Somapala’s mind:
“I will take revenge. I will come back for you. You will never have peace.”
Twenty-one years later, Amanda’s spirit had returned to fulfill her vow. As Somapala looked at the ghostly girl, he knew his time had come.
“Amanda... is that you?”
“Ha ha ha... You remember me now? I told you I would come back. I came back for my revenge. I begged for mercy, but you didn’t listen. Now, get ready to face your fate.”
“Please, Amanda, forgive me. Don’t kill me. Please forgive me...”
“Forgive? Ha ha ha... Did you forgive me when I begged? No! Now, prepare to die... Ha ha ha...”
With a final, bone-chilling laugh, Amanda’s spirit tightened her grip, strangling Somapala until his lifeless body fell to the ground.
The haunted girl had finally taken her revenge, her spirit vanishing into the night.
