In the village of Abhūtagama, the enigmatic death of Somapala has remained a source of intrigue and unease even after three months. The clock reads approximately 9 PM, casting a dim light over the village. Gunapala, a middle-aged man with a hasty demeanor, walks briskly near the desolate and eerie edge of the village, an area known for its ghostly reputation. Despite his age, Gunapala, who is still unmarried and lives alone, moves with urgency. His appearance reflects a life of hardship, with unkempt hair and a face marked by old burn scars. Gunapala's life has been deeply influenced by the superstitions and beliefs that are pervasive in the village. He has always been cautious around the edge of the village, especially after the mysterious death of his friend Somapala. The cold, biting air seemed almost to press against him as he quickened his pace, trying to ignore the growing sense of dread. The path Gunapala took was one rarely traveled by others, overgrown with wild foliage and flanked by gnarled trees whose branches reached out like skeletal hands. Each step he took was accompanied by the rustling of leaves and the distant hoots of owls, adding to the ominous atmosphere. The village seemed to breathe with an ancient, unseen presence, and every shadow seemed to harbor a lurking threat. Suddenly, an intense and chilling sensation envelops him, as if a spectral presence is nearby. Although he tries to dismiss the feeling, it becomes almost unbearable. Gunapala feels a ghostly touch on his shoulder, causing him to look back in alarm. Yet, there is no one there. The darkness and silence added to his growing anxiety. As he walks, Gunapala reflects on the unsettling death of Somapala. The wounds found on Somapala’s neck had suggested the possibility of murder, but the true circumstances of his death remain shrouded in mystery. The expression of terror on Somapala’s face before he died led many villagers to believe that his death was the result of a supernatural force or a malevolent spirit. Gunapala’s thoughts drift back to the night Somapala was found. The village had been awakened by a blood-curdling scream that echoed through the quiet night. When they found him, Somapala's body was contorted in an unnatural position, his face twisted in an expression of sheer horror. The puncture wounds on his neck had only deepened the mystery, leading to rumors of vampires and vengeful spirits. Gunapala, a firm believer in such supernatural entities, is gripped by an overwhelming fear. He starts to walk faster, his heart pounding as the feeling of being pursued intensifies. He looks over his shoulder and glimpses a pale, spectral figure hovering in the air, barely visible. Although the sight is fleeting, it leaves a deep impression on him. The fear becomes so intense that Gunapala begins to run, his breath coming in ragged gasps. The sensation of an unseen presence chasing him drives him to desperation. In his panic, he trips and falls to the ground, momentarily disoriented and unable to process what is happening. Lying there, Gunapala's mind is a whirlwind of terror and confusion. His ears ring with the silence of the night, broken only by the pounding of his own heart. He scrambles to his feet, but before he can make another move, he feels an icy grip on his ankle. He looks down in horror to see a pale, translucent hand emerging from the ground, its fingers digging into his flesh with an unearthly coldness. At that moment, Gunapala’s gaze locks onto a ghostly figure floating above him—a woman in a flowing white garment, her features indistinct but her eyes locked onto him with a disturbing calmness. She smiles faintly, her expression a mix of fear and amusement. Gunapala, paralyzed by terror, recognizes the figure as something otherworldly. His mind races as he stutters out, “Oh my god... a ghost... save me...” The spectral woman’s smile widens, and she begins to speak in a voice that seems to echo from the depths of time. “You cannot escape your fate, Gunapala. The spirits of Abhūtagama demand justice. Somapala's death is only the beginning.”
