The Divorce Papers
The rain poured heavily outside the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Hawthorne mansion, each drop hitting the glass like a quiet accusation. Inside the silent living room, Evelyn Hawthorne sat on the edge of the sofa, her fingers trembling slightly as she stared at the envelope placed on the marble table. She already knew what it contained. Three years. Three years of marriage, and this was how it ended. The door suddenly opened. Adrian Hawthorne walked in, tall and imposing in his perfectly tailored black suit. His expression was as cold as ever, the same distant look that had followed her throughout their marriage. He didn’t even glance at her at first. Instead, he loosened his tie slightly and walked past her like she was nothing more than a shadow in the house. Evelyn’s heart tightened painfully. “Adrian,” she called softly. He stopped. But he didn’t turn around. “Yes?” Just one word. Cold. Detached. Evelyn swallowed the lump in her throat and picked up the envelope. “Is this… from you?” Only then did Adrian turn his head slightly. His dark eyes glanced at the envelope in her hands before returning to his phone. “Yes.” One simple answer. No explanation. No apology. Nothing. Evelyn felt as if someone had stabbed her heart. “Three years,” she whispered. “Did our marriage really mean nothing to you?” Adrian finally looked at her properly. His expression was calm. Too calm. “Our marriage was just an agreement.” The words felt like ice slicing through her chest. Evelyn laughed bitterly. Of course. She had known this from the beginning. Their marriage had been arranged by their families. Adrian had never loved her. But she had been foolish enough to believe that maybe… someday… things would change. Maybe if she tried harder. Maybe if she loved him enough. But now she understood. She had only been living in a dream. “You want a divorce,” she said quietly. Adrian walked toward the table and placed another document beside the envelope. “Yes.” His voice was firm. “The lawyers already prepared everything. You can sign it tonight.” Tonight. Just like that. Evelyn stared at the papers in silence. Her hands trembled as she slowly flipped through them. Divorce agreement. Property division. Compensation. It was all so neat. So clean. Like their three-year marriage had been nothing more than a business contract. Suddenly, her phone vibrated. She glanced down at the screen. Unknown number. Normally she would ignore it. But something made her answer. “Hello?” A respectful voice came from the other side. “Miss Evelyn Carter?” Evelyn froze. No one had called her by that name in years. “Yes…?” The voice sounded relieved. “Miss Carter, we’ve finally reached you. The board urgently requests your return.” Her heart skipped a beat. “…Return?” “Yes, Miss Carter. Your grandfather has already announced it.” “The Carter Group is waiting for its rightful heir.” Evelyn’s eyes widened. Her gaze slowly lifted toward Adrian, who was watching her with mild impatience. “Have you finished reading?” he asked coldly. For a moment, Evelyn said nothing. Then something inside her changed. The pain in her eyes slowly disappeared. In its place… was calm. Dangerous calm. She picked up a pen. Adrian assumed she was about to sign. But instead, Evelyn slowly stood up. “Adrian,” she said quietly. “Yes?” She looked at him one last time. Then she smiled. A smile he had never seen before. “You're right.” “Our marriage was just an agreement.” Before Adrian could react— Evelyn tore the divorce papers straight down the middle. The sharp sound echoed through the silent room. Adrian’s eyes darkened instantly. “What are you doing?” Evelyn dropped the torn papers onto the floor. Then she said something that made his entire expression change. “You’ll get your divorce.” She picked up her phone and walked toward the door. “But when that happens…” She paused and glanced back at him. Her voice was calm. Deadly calm. “You’ll be the one begging me to come back.” Adrian scoffed. But before he could reply— His phone suddenly rang. He answered it impatiently. “What is it?” The voice on the other side sounded panicked. “Mr. Hawthorne! Something big just happened!” Adrian frowned. “What?” “The Carter Group just announced their successor…” He didn’t care about business news right now. But then the next words froze him in place. “The successor is Evelyn Carter.” Adrian slowly turned toward the door. But Evelyn was already gone. And for the first time in three years… Mr. Adrian Hawthorne felt something he had never expected. Fear.
