The Rookie Mistake
His heart was pounding. She could feel his blood flow, as he made eye contact with her across the room. He was handsome and would be a nice snack, before she needed to head to her new home.
“How did you get into my house?”
She smiled at the worry in his voice, “don’t worry I won’t kill you.”
He followed her gaze to his neck. “Are you a vampire?”
“Yes.” She flittered her gaze to the crease line on his forehead. “Does that scare you?”
“I thought vampires needed welcomed in.”
A laugh quietly escaped her. “You have a welcome mat. It works the same way. You should probably change that when I leave. Don’t worry you won’t remember me. Any vampire who have come in will still be able to, but others won’t if you change it.”
“I won’t remember you?”
She smiled, “not at all.”
She noticed the flick of sadness and became curious. He wasn’t anything different than a normal human to her. Someone she could feed on then forget her like everyone else. It made her curious on how he felt about her. He shifted from where he laid.
“If I’m not going to remember you? Can I know your name?”
“I don’t think that is a good idea.”
He rubbed his neck making her eyes drift back to it. “I won’t remember it. What harm would it be?”
“Why aren’t you scared of me? You do know I’m here for your blood correct?”
He chuckled nervously, “I don’t know if it’s because I’ve always wondered about vampires or if it’s because you are insanely beautiful, but I trust you.”
She sighed, but suddenly stiffened at a loud bang from the front door. The young man rushed to his feet. She could smell her kind. It embraced her nose and made her shift her weight.
“Friends of yours?”
She looked to the young male. “You are very calm for someone whose house is being broken into.”
He sighed, “I’m the only one here. The other guys that live here are out at their girlfriend’s house.”
She found herself curious, “you don’t have one?”
He laughed. “Here I thought I was just a meal.”
She knew he wasn’t her beloved. She had heard the stories over all the years she had been alive. There would be an instant connection, when they made eye contact. She wouldn’t be able to leave his or her side. She knew that if this was her beloved, she would probably be more worried about the other vampires walking in. His smell was familiar and that was why she sought out his blood.
“Listen. I am going to get rid of these vampires and leave. You need to replace that mat soon.... forget about the meal.”
His eyes glazed over and she knew he would forget her....if he lived. She swiftly moved through the house and found them in the living room. She noticed one of the vampires. He looked amazed at her appearance.
“I smelled a vampire in my house, but didn’t think it was you.”
She grinned and embraced the man. “How have you been brother?”
The girl next to him and shifted. “Who is this Miles?”
“Calm down Robyn. This is my sister. Though I don’t know why she is here.”
Robyn glared at her as if to explain. “I was heading for a quick snack noticed the welcome mat. I recognized his scent. I think he may be someone I knows beloved. I didn’t know you lived here. I didn’t even notice your scent.”
Her brother laughed and made a knowing smile. “He will meet her soon. We met in school. I assume since you were looking for a snack you are settling down again?”
“I’m heading to a local college campus. I figured better way of meeting my beloved. Is she?”
He glanced at Robyn. “Yes.”
She nodded as they all turned to the sound of foot steps. The guy from upstairs had walked in. Miles smiled as he walked in. She move to the side hoping it had been enough time since he saw her. Robyn looked to her as he hit the bottom step.
“Didn’t know you would be back tonight Miles. I heard someone talking. I didn’t know we had company. Does anyone want a drink?”
Miles looked to her, “can you grab some of my wine and pour three glasses for us? Are you getting a beer?”
He nodded. “Yeah that sounds good. Your wine looks so disgusting. I don’t know how anyone stands it.”
“Maybe one day you will.”
Her eyes darted toward Miles. “Very open in your conversation. If you have a human here, why do you so easily welcome everyone in. You could put the house solely in his name and never have to worry.”
The young man returned with their drinks. The blood hit her nose and she released all the tension she was holding in. Miles wrapped an arm around his beloved. He welcomed his house mate to sit down.
“Miles I think we need a new doormat. I was just thinking about how it looks too I don’t know....common.”
Miles gaze landed on her. “Maybe.... Owen have you met my sister?”
Owen was his name? She mentally kicked herself for not asking earlier. She knew he didn’t remember her. He hadn’t looked to her once. The next thing that left her mouth drop.
“Yes, she tried to make me a meal. She didn’t know you lived here though.”
She turned her gaze on Miles. “What he is destined to a vampire. I thought he should know about us.”
Owen shifted in his chair. “Bold of you to attack someone in your brother’s home.”
“Didn’t know he lived here.”
Robyn gave me a side eye. “Rookie mistake. Must be pretty new to this all.”
She laughed causing her brother to guiltily look away. “When you are over five hundred years old, you tend to not worry over small problem like getting caught.”
Robyn glanced to Miles. “Wait if she is that old then how old are you?”
Miles glanced at her angrily, “sorry, I didn’t say anything sooner. I was worried about you knowing at first. I’m only three years younger than my sister.”
“What is your sister’s name?” Robyn said with an irritated sigh.
She stood up, “you can call me Charolette.”
