Chapter One - The Night The Moon Lied
The night the Moon chose my mate was supposed to be the night my life finally began. Instead, it became the night I learned that the Moon could lie. Or perhaps... She had never lied at all. Perhaps I was simply too blind to understand what she had chosen for me. --- The moon hung low over the Black Moon Pack territory that night, enormous, silver, perfect. Its light spilled across the ceremonial grounds, illuminating hundreds of wolves gathered beneath ancient trees. Tonight was the Moon Choosing Ceremony. The night every unmated wolf waited for. The night the Moon Goddess revealed the person whose soul had been tied to theirs before birth. I stood at the edge of the crowd, twisting my fingers. My heart wouldn’t stop pounding. "You're going to tear your dress." I looked down. Lila was watching my hands. I released the pale blue fabric. "I wasn't." "You’ve been doing that for twenty minutes." I gave a weak smile. "I’m nervous." "You?" She laughed. "You’ve waited for this since you were twelve." "Exactly." "Then why do you look like you’re going to execution?" I glanced at the platform. "I don’t know." Lila followed my gaze. "You’ll be fine, Amara." I wished I believed her. She had always been my anchor—confident, fearless, able to silence Alphas with a look. But tonight she kept studying me like she expected something bad. "Just promise me something," she said suddenly. "What?" "If the Moon chooses someone… don’t let anyone make you feel small." I frowned. "Why would you say that?" She hesitated. Before she could answer, a howl split the forest. The ceremony began. "Go," she said softly. I stepped forward. --- Elders entered first in black robes stitched with silver moons. Then came the Alpha. Kael Draven. Silence fell instantly. He was twenty-six, Alpha for three years—tall, dark-haired, carved from steel and authority. Even elders lowered their heads. Feared. Respected. Untouchable. And for reasons I never understood, I had always felt… safe when I looked at him. Beside him stood Serena Draven. His daughter. Beautiful, powerful, certain to be Luna. She smiled at him. He smiled back. Something twisted in my chest. Don’t be stupid, Amara. You’re here for your mate. Not him. --- Elder Malachi raised his staff. "Tonight, the Moon Goddess opens the bonds of destiny. No force can break what she has chosen." His eyes briefly met mine. Then the wind shifted. And I smelled him. Cedarwood. Rain. Smoke. My body froze. My wolf surged awake. Amara. "What?" I feel him. Our mate. I turned. And met Kael’s eyes. The world vanished. His expression changed instantly. His nostrils flared. He knew. My heart soared. He was my mate. The Alpha. Chosen for me. Kael walked toward me. One step. Two. Three. He stopped in front of me. "Kael," I whispered. No answer. The bond between us burned alive. "You’re my mate," I said. His jaw tightened. He looked around at the watching crowd. Then back at me. Cold. Wrong. "Say something," I pleaded. "Amara..." My name on his tongue made my heart leap. "Can you feel it too?" I asked. Silence. "Yes," he said finally. Hope returned. "Then..." "I don’t want this." The words shattered me. "What?" "I reject this bond." Laughter escaped me, broken. "You don’t get to choose." "I know." "Then why... " "Because I reject you." The world went silent. Pain exploded in my chest. I dropped to my knees. No. No. No. Lila shouted my name, but I couldn’t breathe. Tears blurred everything. "Why?" I choked. His voice was flat. "I need a Luna who strengthens my pack." "I can learn." "You shouldn’t have to." "Then help me." Something flickered in his eyes—gone too fast. Then Serena touched his arm. Everything in him shifted toward her. Familiar. Easy. My stomach turned. "I need a Luna from a powerful bloodline," he said. "And I’m not?" "No." The word destroyed me. He turned away with her. I was left kneeling in front of everyone. Someone whispered, "The Moon made a mistake." Maybe they were right. --- I ran. I don’t remember leaving. Only running until the pack’s sounds disappeared. The forest swallowed me. I collapsed beneath an oak, shaking. Why didn’t he want us? "I don’t know." What did we do wrong? "Nothing." Footsteps. I stiffened. "Amara?" Lila. "Go away." She knelt anyway and hugged me. For a moment, I broke in silence. Then she froze. Her eyes locked on my wrist. "What?" I asked. She went pale. "Your wrist." "There’s nothing there." But she grabbed my hand. "Come with me." "Lila, you’re hurting me." She let go instantly. "Go home. Please." Then she ran. The forest went dead silent. No wind. No sound. The moon turned red. My breath caught. A voice echoed through the dark. Amara. The Moon Goddess. Do not mourn the bond that was broken. "What does that mean?" Pain ripped through my wrist. I screamed. A mark burned into my skin—two overlapping crescents. Two moons. My wolf whispered: There is another. A howl answered. Close. Powerful. A man stepped from the trees. Tall. Dark. Watching me like he had been waiting forever. Mate. "You finally found me," he said. "Who are you?" "Lucian." Lucian Blackthorn. The missing Alpha. The dead Alpha. Except he wasn’t dead. He looked at my wrist. Fear flickered in his eyes. "You have the second mark." "What does that mean?" "It means the Moon didn’t make a mistake." A branch snapped. Kael stood behind us. He had followed me. His gaze moved from Lucian… to me… to the mark. For the first time, he looked uncertain. Afraid. Lucian stepped in front of me. Kael’s voice hardened. "What are you doing here?" Lucian smiled coldly. "The same thing you are." Kael looked at me again. Something in him cracked. Lucian leaned close. "Do not let him know who you are." My heart stopped. "Who am I?" Before he could answer, howls erupted across the forest. The moon turned fully red. Far away, an old woman opened a locked chest. Inside: a photo of my parents… and a silver pendant with two moons. Her hands shook. "They’ve found her." And softly— "The truth is coming for Amara." Three people knew. Lila. Mrs. Elara. Lucian. And the Moon had already begun to reveal what I was never meant to know. There was no going back.
