Chapter 1: The Feast of Fools
The night air creeping over the jagged mountain ridges of the Silver Moon territory was biting and bitter, but inside the packed pack square, the atmosphere was utterly suffocating. Hundreds of high-ranking wolves, warriors, and elders had gathered under the brilliant, haunting glow of the seasonal full moon, their bodies pressed tight against one another in a dense sea of fur and leather. Tonight was the long awaited ascension ceremony the night Kaelen, the Alpha’s eldest and most ruthless son, would officially assume full leadership of the pack. Elena stood at the absolute furthest edge of the clearing, her back pressed against the rough, frozen bark of a dead oak tree. Her heart was pounding so furiously against her ribs that she was certain the warriors standing yards away could hear its frantic rhythm. Her fingers tightly gripped the frayed, unraveled edges of her oversized, faded gray sweater. It was three sizes too big, a cheap piece of fabric she used as a shield to hide her trembling hands and make herself look as invisible as possible. As an unbonded Omega, she had spent her entire life trying to blend into the shadows of this pack, surviving on their leftover scraps and enduring their casual cruelty. The exact moment Kaelen’s heavy leather boots stepped onto the elevated stone stage, a sudden, overpowering wave of energy rolled across the square. A thick, intoxicating scent of crushed pine needles, dark ozone, and fresh, heavy rain hit Elena’s senses like a physical blow. Deep within her soul, a sudden, piercing howl of absolute, undeniable certainty erupted from her consciousness. Mate.
The word echoed through her mind, so loud and clear that she could barely draw oxygen into her lungs. The Moon Goddess hadn't forgotten her. She had been blessed with the ultimate gift. Kaelen the strongest, most lethal warrior in the northern territories, a man she had secretly loved from afar since they were children was her fated mate.
Up on the grand stone stage, Kaelen’s dark, predatory eyes suddenly flashed a brilliant, dominant shade of amber. His nostrils flared violently as he caught her unique scent cutting through the crowd. Slowly, deliberately, his sharp gaze swung across the sea of faces, locking dead onto Elena's pale face at the back of the square.
Elena took a shaky, hopeful step forward, a nervous but radiant smile forming on her lips. Her chest swelled with a sudden, overwhelming warmth. She waited for him to call her name. She waited for him to step down from the stage, pull her into his arms, and accept the divine bond that would change her miserable life forever. Instead, the amber light in Kaelen’s eyes abruptly died out, replaced by an expression of pure, unadulterated disgust. His lips curled into a sneer as he looked at her faded clothes and her small, fragile frame. He didn't take a single step toward her. Instead, he reached out a heavily calloused hand and pulled Cynthia, the pack's elite lead warrior, tightly to his side. Cynthia smirked triumphantly, her fingers looping possessively through the belt of Kaelen's armor. The entire crowd went completely silent, the heavy tension in the air thick enough to cut with a blade. Kaelen cleared his throat, his deep, commanding Alpha aura booming through the microphone, vibrating through the stone floor and shaking the very dirt beneath Elena's feet.“ Members of the Silver Moon Pack," Kaelen announced coldly, his amber eyes locked onto Elena like a predator staring at a weak piece of prey. "A true Alpha needs a powerful, lethal wolf to rule by his side. A supreme leader cannot be weighed down by administrative weakness or pathetic bloodlines."Elena’s blood ran completely ice cold. The warmth in her chest turned into solid stone. “ Therefore, in front of the Moon Goddess, the high elders, and my entire pack," Kaelen bellowed, his voice filled with a ruthless, final authority, "I, Alpha Kaelen, officially reject you, Elena, as my fated mate and future Luna. You are nothing but a weak, useless Omega. You are entirely unfit to stand by my side." Shocked gasps erupted through the crowd, followed immediately by cruel, mocking whispers. Dozens of wolves turned around, pointing their fingers and laughing openly at Elena’s pale, trembling form. Cynthia leaned victoriously into Kaelen's broad shoulder, her eyes mocking Elena from the stage. Before Elena could even draw a breath to protest, the mate rejection bond snapped through her chest like a jagged physical dagger, tearing her soul completely apart. A sharp, burning agony exploded in her veins, forcing a loud scream from her throat as she dropped heavily to her knees in the cold dirt. Tears blurred her vision, spilling down her cheeks as her inner wolf whimpered in absolute, broken heartbreak, retreating into the deepest corners of her mind.
Kaelen didn't even bother to look down at her as she wept in the mud. His expression remained totally indifferent to her agony. “ Guards," Kaelen ordered, his tone devoid of any human emotion. "She is a stain on our new hierarchy and no longer welcome in our territory. Drag her to the western border immediately, and exile her into the badlands." As rough, heavy hands gripped her bruised arms, dragging her ruthlessly through the dirt and away from the only home she had ever known, the agonizing heartbreak inside Elena’s chest slowly began to alter. The burning pain began to freeze, hardening into a dark, quiet, and terrifying fury. They thought she was just a weak, defenseless Omega who would crawl away and die in the dark. They were wrong. And one day, she would make every single one of them pay in blood.
