Where Control Breaks

654 Words
Night had never felt like this before. Too thick. Too watchful. Too aware. Aria stood at the edge of the clearing, arms wrapped loosely around herself, but the gesture did nothing to calm the restless energy pacing beneath her skin. Her wolf was awake. Not panicked. Not afraid. Anticipating. And that… that was the dangerous part. A twig snapped behind her. She didn’t turn. She didn’t have to. Ryan’s presence rolled over her senses first warm, commanding, impossible to ignore. It hit her like stepping too close to a fire. “You keep running,” his voice came low and rough behind her. Aria exhaled slowly. “I’m not running. A pause. Then closer footsteps. Slow. Measured. Predatory. “Then why,” Ryan continued quietly, “do you look like you’re about to bolt every time I get near you?” Her pulse betrayed her immediately jumping hard against her throat. Because he was too close now. Way too close. She could feel the heat of him at her back. Feel the way her wolf was practically pressing forward inside her chest, restless and hungry and far too interested. Aria turned slowly. Big mistake. Ryan was right there. Close enough that if she leaned forward even slightly Her breath caught. His eyes dropped to her lips. Just for a second. But she saw it. And her wolf preened. Dangerous girl. Ryan’s jaw tightened like he realized she noticed. “Something is changing,” he said, voice quieter now. Rougher. “And it’s not just you.” Aria swallowed. “Maybe you’re imagining things, Alpha.” His hand moved before she could think. Fast. Certain. He didn’t grab her. Didn’t trap her. But his fingers closed loosely around her wrist — warm, firm, very deliberate. The contact shot straight through her. Her breath hitched. Ryan felt it. Of course he did. His eyes darkened slowly. “Well,” he murmured, voice dipping lower, “your wolf seems very real to me.” Heat flooded Aria’s face — but beneath the embarrassment was something far more dangerous. Want. Her wolf pushed forward hard now, a low vibration building in her chest before she could stop it. Ryan froze. Completely. His grip on her wrist tightened just slightly. Not painful. But possessive enough to make her stomach flip. “…Aria,” he said slowly. Not questioning this time. Recognizing. The air between them thickened until it was almost hard to breathe. For a long second… Neither of them moved. Then Ryan stepped closer. Just one step. But it was enough to back Aria lightly against the tree behind her. Trapped. Not unwilling. Definitely not safe. His hand lifted slowly — giving her every chance to pull away. She didn’t. His fingers brushed lightly against her jaw. Barely there. But the contact sent sparks racing down her spine. Her wolf surged forward with a sharp, pleased rumble. Ryan’s control cracked. She saw it happen. Right there in his eyes. Gone was the careful Alpha. Gone was the measured distance. What replaced it was older. Hungrier. “Tell me to stop,” he said quietly. The words sounded controlled. The tone absolutely was not. Aria’s lips parted. But nothing came out. Because the truth? She didn’t want him to stop. Ryan’s breath grew heavier — like he heard the answer she didn’t say. His forehead lowered slowly until it hovered just shy of hers. So close. Too close. The heat between them spiked sharply. And for the first time since all of this began Aria’s power flickered. Just for a second. The air around them pulsed. Ryan stiffened immediately. His head lifted sharply. Eyes flashing. Alert. Dangerously aware. “…what was that?” he asked quietly. Aria’s stomach dropped. Because she had felt it too. Not her wolf. Something else. Something deeper. Something strange And somewhere far beyond the pack lands… King Lucian’s smile slowly widened in the dark.
