PROLOGUE
They say high school life is filled with happiness. It's where you experience the first sweetness of love and the first pain it can bring.
"I love you so much, Lexi Ann Castillon."
Lexi smiled at the words of the young man who held her right hand tightly. It was lunch break, and they were just hanging out at the gymnasium. Lexi could also feel the stares of the surrounding students. Her boyfriend, Chase Grey Sandoval, was a varsity player and the school heartthrob, so she wasn't surprised that they were the center of attention. Who would have thought that someone like Chase would fall for someone like her?
"Why do I feel like you’ve done something wrong, Chase? I’m nervous," she said jokingly.
But instead of laughing, Chase’s face became serious, and that caused Lexi’s smile to fade, replaced by unease.
"I’m sorry, Lexi," Chase said softly.
Lexi quickly pulled her hand away, tears starting to fall.
"So, it’s true? Did you only approach and court me because your friends bet on me?"
Lexi had heard rumors that the entire basketball team had bet on her, but she had felt Chase’s love and didn’t believe the gossip. She chose to trust him instead.
But when Chase didn’t answer, she already knew the truth. Bitterly, she smiled.
"Well, how could I blame you for not taking me seriously? I’m just a big nerd in this school. But I wish you hadn’t dragged it out for nine months. I can’t imagine how miserable it must have been for you, pretending to love me."
"Lexi Ann."
"I get it now, Chase Grey. Thank you for the nine months."
Lexi didn’t allow Chase to say anything further. She couldn’t bear to hear what he had to say, not wanting the pain to increase. She quickly walked out of the gymnasium, wanting to get away from the person she never thought would hurt her.
As she walked, she crossed paths with her sister. Shiela wore a broad smile as if she already knew what had happened.
"It looks like he already told you everything," she said happily.
Lexi chose to ignore her sister. She was about to leave when Shiela quickly grabbed her arm.
"If you think there's any hope for you to be happy, just dream on. You’ll suffer for the rest of your life because of your mother’s sins. You're just an illegitimate child!"
