His fingers grazed her bare wrist, slow, deliberate, like he was memorizing her pulse.

“You don’t get it, do you?” he rasped, voice low enough to tremble in her chest.

“I’ve been trying to stay away from you.”

She shivered as he leaned in, lips brushing the shell of her ear.

“But if you look at me like that again, I’ll ruin you, and not just tonight.”

Lila Carter just wanted a job, after University, but what she got was a one-way ticket into the most powerful company in the country, and under the control of the coldest, most impossible boss alive.

Damien Blackthorne doesn’t have feelings. Don't make mistakes. And definitely doesn’t do distractions.

But then she walked in, clumsy, loud, and everything he shouldn’t want.

What starts as a simple assistant job quickly spirals into something neither of them expected. The rules blur. Secrets build. And hearts begin to break in silence.

In a world where power means everything and love is a weakness…

What happens when the one person you should stay away from is the only one who sees you?

Chapter 1
"We did it!" Amaya squealed, throwing her arms in the air as she ran over, her cap barely hanging on. "Can you believe it? We actually did it, Lila!" Lila laughed, catching her before they both toppled over. "Barely. I still feel like I forgot to submit something important." "Same," Jo said, adjusting her sash as she joined them. "But if they gave us the papers, then it's too late now. We’re graduates. We’re finally free!" The three of them broke into giggles, high on relief and sunshine. Around them, music played from a portable speaker someone had set up, and the smell of food trucks drifted from the parking lot. "Remember freshman year?" Amaya said, flopping onto the grass. "When Lila had that meltdown because she accidentally spilled coffee on Professor Dean’s laptop?" Lila groaned. "Don’t remind me! I thought I was going to get expelled. And you two made it worse by laughing like hyenas." "We were trying to comfort you," jo said innocently. "By filming it!" They all burst out laughing again. Lila let herself fall back on the grass, staring up at the cloudless sky. This moment felt perfect, too perfect. Her heart ached in the middle of all the joy, but she pushed the feeling away. She always did. She didn’t want her friends to worry. She didn’t want anyone to see how tight things had gotten at home. How many jobs she’d applied to without hearing anything back. How her rent was overdue and her little brother’s school fees were piling up. Not today. Today was for celebrating. "So," jo said, propping herself on her elbows. "What now? What’s the plan, ladies?" Amaya grinned. "I’ve got an internship lined up at that PR firm downtown. Starts Monday." "Nice!" jo clapped. "I’m heading to New York in a week, but I'll be back after. My uncle hooked me up with a junior developer role. Crazy, right?" They both looked at Lila. She smiled brightly, not missing a beat. "Still figuring things out. You know me, leap first, plan later." They chuckled, satisfied with the answer. "You’ll land something amazing," Amaya said. "You’re like... secretly a genius." "And somehow still the clumsiest person alive," jo added with a wink. Lila laughed with them, but her stomach twisted. She didn’t have an offer. No interviews. Nothing solid. Just hope, student debt and a worn-out resume. And a brother who looked up to her like she was some kind of superhero. Her phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out and saw a message from her brother. "So proud of you, Lils. I knew you’d make it. Can’t wait for you to come home. I saved you the last slice of cake!" Her throat tightened. She quickly typed back a heart emoji and shoved her phone away before her emotions could catch up to her. "Wanna take pictures?" Amaya asked, already pulling out her phone. "Duh! This hair didn’t curl itself," jo said, striking a pose. They spent the next hour snapping silly, sweet, and slightly chaotic photos around campus. In front of the tech building, on the main steps, even by the big graduation banner that kept flapping in the wind. Lila made sure to smile in every single one. Later, they walked to their favorite coffee shop across the street. It was half-empty, the usual crowd gone for the summer. They ordered iced lattes and pastries, claiming the couch in the back corner. Amaya stretched out with a groan. "I’m gonna sleep for three days straight." "I’m gonna celebrate for three days straight," jo said. "Starting with that party tonight. You’re both coming, right?" "Of course," Lila said automatically, though she wasn’t sure she meant it. She stared into her drink, watching the ice melt. Her friends were moving forward. Their lives were starting. But hers felt like it was still stuck at the edge, waiting. "Hey," Amaya said gently, nudging her knee. "You okay?" Lila looked up and smiled. "Yeah. Just... soaking it all in." She wasn’t ready to talk about the fear. About the growing pressure in her chest every time she opened another rejection email. She couldn’t tell them how terrified she was of failing. "We did it," she whispered instead. "No matter what happens next... we really did it." They clinked coffee cups together, and for a moment, the future didn’t matter. For a moment, they were just three girls who made it through the madness together. Tomorrow, the world could come knocking. But today? Today, they were free. When Lila got back to her apartment, the small apartment smelled faintly of her brother’s cinnamon candles and the fresh coffee brewing on the stove. Her heart lifted just a little. This was home, her safe place. “Lils! You’re finally here!” Jamie, her younger brother, bounded toward her, arms wide open. She dropped her graduation cap and diploma on the kitchen counter and wrapped him up in a tight hug. “You did it, Lila! You’re officially done!” She laughed, brushing his curly hair out of his face. “We did it, Jamie. Both of us. You with your exams, and me with… all this.” She gestured vaguely toward the pile of papers, books, and the golden diploma. Jamie’s eyes sparkled. “I’m so proud of you. Mom would be, too.” His voice softened, and for a moment, the joy in the room dimmed just a little. Lila squeezed his shoulder gently. “Me too. But I’m still here, Jamie. I’ll always be here for you.” They moved to the small living room where a modest cake waited, decorated with bright blue icing and “Congrats Grad!” written in shaky letters. Jamie had saved every penny to buy it. Lila smiled, feeling the weight of responsibility on her shoulders but determined not to let it crush the moment. As they sat eating cake, Jamie chatted about his plans to start college next year. Lila nodded along, but her mind drifted to her own uncertain future. She’d majored in tech, software engineering, coding, artificial intelligence, all things that had fascinated her since high school. Yet now, faced with the real world, she felt the tiniest flicker of doubt. Would she really make it at any company? Is she even going to get a job at any company? Jamie caught her distracted silence and nudged her. “Hey, what’s up? You look… different.” Lila forced a smile, shaking off the worry. “Nothing, just tired. Big day, you know?” Jamie didn’t look convinced but said nothing. Instead, he changed the subject to funny stories from school and their favorite movies, making her laugh until tears pricked the corners of her eyes. Later, as Jamie fell asleep, Lila sat by the window, staring out at the city skyline. The lights twinkled like a million promises, some waiting to be kept, others threatening to shatter. She took a deep breath and whispered, “Okay, world. I’m ready.” Despite the excitement and laughter of the day, beneath her cheerful exterior, Lila’s heart beat with a fierce determinati on. Whatever came next, she was going to fight for her dreams and protect the family she loved.
