The first rays of dawn painted the Rainbow Forest in hues of gold, pink, and green. Birds with shimmering feathers flitted between branches, their songs echoing softly. Riko awoke beneath the Heart Tree, the dew cool on his skin, and for a moment he wondered if everything from last night had been a dream.
Then he noticed Lilo snoring loudly beside him, paws twitching as if chasing something in his dreams. And when Riko looked at his own hands, he swore he saw a faint shimmer, as though starlight was hiding beneath his skin.
No it was real. All of it.
“Morning, sleepyhead!” Lilo’s cheerful voice broke his thoughts. The rabbit stretched, ears twitching with energy. “Ready for training?”
Riko groaned, rubbing his eyes. “Training? Already? I barely slept!”
“The Shadow doesn’t take naps,” Lilo replied seriously. “If you don’t learn how to control the light, it might consume you—or worse, fail when you need it most.”
That sent a chill down Riko’s spine. He sat up quickly. “Alright. What do I have to do?”
Lilo grinned. “Follow me.”
They walked through the forest until they reached a clearing where the grass glowed faintly under the sun. Tiny crystal-like flowers bloomed, releasing a soft sparkle in the air.
“This is the Glimmer Field,” Lilo explained. “The light is strongest here, perfect for your first lesson.”
Riko nodded nervously. “And what’s the lesson?”
Lilo hopped to the center of the clearing. “Focus on your heart. Remember how you felt when you stood against the Shadow?”
Riko frowned. “I was… scared. But I didn’t want to run away.”
“Exactly!” Lilo beamed. “The light responds to your courage. Fear weakens it, but kindness and bravery make it shine brighter. Now close your eyes, hold out your hands, and remember that moment.”
Riko hesitated, then obeyed. He closed his eyes, lifting his palms upward. At first, nothing happened. He only felt the warmth of the sun on his skin.
But then he pictured the Shadow’s glowing eyes, the way the darkness had tried to swallow him. His chest tightened. He remembered refusing to run, choosing to stand his ground. That same warmth from before rose inside him gentle, steady, like a fire refusing to die.
A faint glow appeared in his hands.
“Yes! You’re doing it!” Lilo cheered.
The light grew brighter, swirling into a small orb that hovered above Riko’s palms. It was soft yet powerful, pulsing with colors that shifted like a rainbow.
Riko opened one eye and gasped. “I-I did it!”
But his excitement broke his concentration. The orb wobbled and burst into tiny sparks that faded in the air.
Riko slumped. “Oh no! I ruined it.”
Lilo shook his head. “No, no! That was amazing for a first try. It took me weeks just to make a spark when I was young.”
“You were young?” Riko asked, raising a brow.
Lilo puffed out his chest proudly. “Of course! Rabbits like me can live for hundreds of years. Don’t let the fluffy face fool you.”
Riko chuckled despite himself. “Alright, what’s next?”
The next part of training was harder. Lilo placed small stones around the clearing and asked Riko to light them one by one without letting the glow fade.
At first, Riko struggled. His light would spark, shine for a moment, then flicker out. Sweat dripped down his face as frustration built up.
“This is impossible,” he muttered.
“Hey,” Lilo said gently. “Don’t forget courage, not frustration. The light listens to your heart.”
Riko took a deep breath, calming himself. He thought about his grandmother’s smile, the laughter of his little sister back home, the joy he felt when discovering something new. Slowly, the warmth returned. He reached out, touching the first stone, and it lit up with a soft golden glow.
Then the second. The third. One by one, the stones began to shine like little stars in the grass.
By the time he reached the last stone, Riko was exhausted but smiling. The field looked like a sky full of stars had fallen to the ground.
“You did it!” Lilo shouted, hopping around excitedly. “You’re a natural!”
Riko collapsed onto the grass, laughing breathlessly. “A natural who feels like he ran ten marathons.”
Lilo giggled. “That’s just the beginning. Tomorrow, we’ll try shaping the light into forms.”
Riko groaned. “Forms? Like what?”
“Like shields, ropes, even wings if you’re really good,” Lilo replied with a wink.
Riko’s eyes widened. “Wings? Seriously?”
“Of course! Light can take any form. You’ll see.”
As the sun set, painting the sky orange and violet, Riko and Lilo returned to the Heart Tree. Fireflies danced around them, glowing like tiny lanterns.
For the first time since arriving in the forest, Riko felt… hopeful.
He still didn’t fully understand why the light had chosen him, but each spark, each glow, made him believe he could learn.
Yet, deep in his heart, he knew the Shadow was watching.
And indeed, far away at the edge of the forest, the Dark Shadow seethed in silence. Its red eyes glowed brighter as it watched the flickering lights in the distance.
“So… the boy has awakened the light,” it hissed. “No matter. The brighter he shines, the sweeter it will be when I extinguish him.”
The mist curled tighter around its form as it vanished into the darkness, plotting its next move.
That night, as Riko lay beneath the glowing branches of the Heart Tree, he whispered to himself:
“I’ll get stronger. No matter what it takes. I’ll protect this forest… and the people I love.”
His hands glowed faintly again, the light answering his promise.
And so, Riko’s journey had truly begun not as a lost boy, but as the bearer of light destined to face the darkness.
