Riko and the Rainbow Forest
Riko had always been curious. While other children in his village preferred to play games near the river or help their parents at the market, Riko loved wandering in the fields and listening to the rustling of the trees. He was only ten years old, but his mind was full of questions: Why do stars twinkle? Why do leaves dance in the wind? Could animals really talk if we learned their secret language? On one warm evening, when the sun was slowly sinking and painting the sky orange, Riko noticed something unusual. Beyond the line of trees at the edge of the village, a faint glow shimmered, almost like a rainbow lying low on the ground. It wasn’t the usual sunset light. This glow pulsed, brightened, and dimmed, as if calling out to him. “Strange…” Riko whispered to himself. “I’ve never seen light like that before.” His heart raced with excitement. He knew his parents wouldn’t want him to go into the forest after dusk. “It’s dangerous,” they always said. “Stay close to the village.” But curiosity was stronger than fear. With quiet steps, Riko tiptoed away from the path, slipped past the last hut, and entered the woods. The air grew cooler under the trees. Birds were settling down for the night, and the forest floor smelled of moss and damp earth. Riko walked carefully, following the glowing light. With every step, the strange rainbow glow seemed to guide him deeper inside. After a while, he reached a clearing. His eyes widened. Before him stood the most beautiful sight he had ever seen: a forest of trees that sparkled with colors. Each tree glowed faintly some blue, some golden, some green like living lanterns. The air shimmered as though painted by invisible rainbows. It was as if he had stepped into another world. “Wow…” Riko gasped, his mouth open. “This place is magical.” He took a step forward, reaching out to touch the bark of a glowing tree. But before his fingers could brush it, a voice spoke behind him. “You shouldn’t touch that tree, you know.” Riko spun around. His eyes darted left and right, but he saw no one. “Who’s there?” he asked nervously. “Down here!” Startled, Riko looked down and almost fell backward. A small blue rabbit stood on its hind legs, staring at him with big round eyes. Its fur shimmered like sapphire, and its ears twitched impatiently. “You… you can talk?!” Riko stuttered. “Of course I can talk,” the rabbit said, crossing its little arms. “My name is Lilo. And you, stranger, are trespassing in the Rainbow Forest.” Riko’s jaw dropped. “Rainbow Forest? That’s what this place is called?” “Yes,” Lilo replied proudly. “This is a sacred forest, hidden from ordinary eyes. Only those with a brave heart and a curious spirit can find the path here. Apparently, you’re one of them.” Riko blinked, hardly believing his ears. A talking rabbit, a magical forest… it was like stepping into one of the bedtime stories his grandmother used to tell. “But… why can I see it?” he asked softly. Lilo tilted his head. “Maybe because you’re meant to help us.” “Help you? With what?” Before the rabbit could answer, a cold wind blew across the clearing. The colorful lights on the trees flickered, as if scared. Riko shivered. He felt something watching him from the shadows. Lilo’s ears stood tall. His playful eyes turned serious. “The Dark Shadow is near,” he whispered. “We need to leave. Now.” “The Dark Shadow?” Riko asked, confused. Lilo hopped closer, tugging on Riko’s shirt with his tiny paw. “No time to explain. Follow me!” Riko hesitated for only a moment. Then, with his heart pounding, he followed the glowing blue rabbit deeper into the Rainbow Forest. They ran through twisting paths lined with glowing mushrooms and flowers that shone like stars. The deeper they went, the more magical the forest became. But behind them, the shadows thickened. Strange whispers floated in the air, cold and threatening. “Who… who is the Dark Shadow?” Riko finally asked as they slowed down near a sparkling stream. Lilo’s ears drooped slightly. “It’s the creature that wants to steal the colors of this forest. If it succeeds, all light and joy here will vanish. The Rainbow Forest will die.” Riko swallowed hard. “That sounds… terrible. But why me? I’m just a boy. What can I do?” Lilo looked at him with shining eyes. “Sometimes, even the smallest person can hold the biggest light. You came here for a reason. I don’t know why yet but I believe you’re the one who can help.” Riko sat on a rock by the stream, his thoughts spinning. He had only wanted to see where the strange light came from. He hadn’t expected to find a talking rabbit, a magical forest, and a dangerous shadow. Part of him wanted to run home, crawl into bed, and pretend this had never happened. But another part the curious, brave part wanted to stay. Before he could answer, the ground beneath them trembled. The stream’s water rippled unnaturally. A low growl echoed through the trees. The shadows thickened once more, forming a dark, swirling shape. Two glowing red eyes pierced the night. Lilo gasped. “It’s here.” Riko froze, staring at the terrifying figure. His hands shook, but he clenched his fists tightly. He didn’t know how, but he knew this moment was the beginning of something bigger than himself. The Dark Shadow’s voice rumbled like thunder. “So… a boy has entered my forest.” Riko’s legs wanted to run, but his heart whispered: Stay. He took a deep breath, looked at Lilo, and whispered, “I’m not afraid.” Lilo’s eyes sparkled with hope. “Then maybe, Riko, you are the light we’ve been waiting for.” ✨ To be continued…
