Chapter 14: The surrender - Episode 4
the silence between them stretched, thick with unspoken truths. eva’s heart pounded as she tried to process everything that had happened in the last twenty-four hours. she had spent years fighting for freedom, only to realize that true captivity was not in the walls around her, but in the choices she had left.
alessio stood across the room, his hands in his pockets, watching her with a quiet intensity. he had always been an enigma—dangerous, unreadable, and yet, in moments like these, something flickered beneath the surface. a vulnerability he refused to name.
“you should rest,” he said finally, his voice softer than she expected. “tomorrow will be—”
“i don’t need rest,” eva cut in sharply. “i need answers.”
alessio exhaled, a hint of frustration in his expression. “you have all the answers you need.”
“no,” she countered. “i have the answers you want me to have.”
something shifted in his gaze, but he said nothing. instead, he moved closer, his presence overwhelming as he stood before her. “what do you want, eva?”
she wanted to scream. to rage at him for every moment he had taken her choices away. but deep down, beneath the fury, was a terrifying realization.
she didn’t know what she wanted anymore.
eva forced herself to hold his gaze. “i want to know the truth about my father. i want to know what’s coming next. i want to know why you’re still trying to protect me when i should be your enemy.”
alessio studied her for a long moment before answering. “because you were never meant to be my enemy.”
the words sent a shiver down her spine. “then what was i meant to be?”
he didn’t respond. instead, he stepped back, a muscle ticking in his jaw. “tomorrow, we meet with the others. you’ll get your answers then.”
eva clenched her fists. she hated how he could dismiss her questions so easily, how he always seemed to be in control. but there was something different in his demeanor tonight—something guarded. as if he was struggling with a war inside himself just as much as she was.
she watched as he turned, moving toward the door. “get some sleep,” he said over his shoulder.
and then he was gone, leaving her alone with the storm raging inside her.
---
the next morning, eva awoke with a sense of dread coiling in her stomach. she had barely slept, her mind replaying every conversation, every look alessio had given her. she didn’t trust him, but she was beginning to realize something dangerous—
she might understand him.
a knock at the door pulled her from her thoughts. before she could respond, it opened, and marco stepped inside. unlike alessio, marco carried none of the unreadable restraint. he was sharp, ruthless, and had no patience for games.
“time to go,” he said, his tone curt.
eva met his gaze. “where?”
marco smirked. “to meet the people who decide your fate.”
---
the drive was silent. alessio sat beside her in the car, his expression unreadable as they moved through the city. she could see the tension in his posture, the way his fingers tapped lightly against his knee. he was on edge. that, more than anything, unsettled her.
when they arrived at the secluded estate, eva felt her stomach tighten. the building loomed ahead, grand and imposing. it wasn’t just a meeting—it was a test.
alessio stepped out first, offering his hand to her. she hesitated before accepting it, her fingers barely brushing his as she climbed out of the car.
inside, the air was thick with power. men and women sat around an ornate table, their eyes sharp and assessing as they took her in.
an older man at the head of the table leaned forward. “so this is the girl who’s caused so much trouble.”
eva lifted her chin. “i suppose that depends on your definition of trouble.”
a few of them chuckled, but alessio remained stone-faced beside her.
the man studied her. “you’re here because of your father. because of the choices he made, and the debts he left behind.”
eva’s pulse pounded. “and what exactly does that mean for me?”
he smiled, but there was no warmth in it. “it means, eva, that your war isn’t over. it’s just beginning.”
---
the meeting was a blur of threats and promises. eva listened as they discussed alliances, debts, and the future that was being carved for her whether she wanted it or not.
when it finally ended, she felt drained, her mind spinning with everything she had learned. but the worst part? she wasn’t sure if she could still distinguish between her enemies and her allies.
as they left, alessio placed a hand on her lower back, guiding her toward the car. she wanted to pull away, but the weight of the night pressed down on her.
“you did well,” he murmured.
eva scoffed. “i survived.”
he glanced at her, his expression unreadable. “that’s the first step.”
she looked up at him, searching his face for something—anything. “and what’s the second?”
alessio hesitated, then said softly, “deciding who to trust.”
eva swallowed hard, realizing the battle she had been fighting wasn’t just against the people around her.
it was against herself.
The night was colder than usual, the air thick with the scent of rain that had yet to fall. Eva stood by the window of her room, her fingers pressed lightly against the cold glass. The events of the past few days had unraveled her carefully built defenses, leaving her more vulnerable than she had ever allowed herself to be.
Alessio had given her space, but his presence lingered like a shadow she could never quite shake. She could feel him watching, waiting. He had honored his word—he hadn't lied. But the truth was proving to be far more suffocating than the lies ever had been.
A soft knock at the door pulled her from her thoughts. She didn’t turn as she called out, "Come in."
The door opened, and she knew before looking that it was Alessio. His footsteps were deliberate, controlled. He was always like that—every movement precise, every decision calculated. But tonight, there was something different in the way he carried himself. A tension that hadn't been there before.
"We need to talk," he said, his voice quieter than usual.
Eva turned to face him, her expression unreadable. "About what?"
Alessio shut the door behind him and took a few steps closer. "About what happens next."
She let out a dry laugh, crossing her arms over her chest. "What happens next? You mean how I continue playing the role of the woman under your control? Or how I pretend that surrendering was ever really a choice?"
His jaw tensed, but he didn’t react to her bitterness. "You know it was a choice, Eva. And you also know that there’s more at stake here than just you and me."
She narrowed her eyes. "Then stop speaking in riddles and tell me what it is you’re not saying."
Alessio hesitated for a fraction of a second, then pulled a folded document from his jacket and placed it on the table between them. "Your brother sent this."
Eva’s stomach dropped. She reached out, her hands slightly trembling as she unfolded the paper. Her eyes skimmed over the words, her breath catching as realization dawned on her.
Her brother wasn’t just trying to negotiate her release anymore. He was making a move—a dangerous one.
"He’s planning an attack," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "He’s trying to take down the DeLuca family."
Alessio nodded, his expression dark. "And he’s willing to use you as leverage to do it."
Eva sank into the nearest chair, the weight of the situation crashing down on her. She had spent so long fighting to get away from this world, and now, no matter which direction she turned, she was being pulled back into it.
"What do you expect me to do?" she asked, her voice hollow. "Betray my own brother? Choose your family over my own?"
Alessio crouched in front of her, his hands resting on his knees as he met her gaze. "I expect you to survive, Eva. And right now, the only way to do that is to decide where your loyalties truly lie."
She swallowed hard, looking away. "I don’t know if I can do that."
He reached out, his fingers brushing against her hand, grounding her. "Then let me help you."
Eva looked back at him, her heart pounding. "And what if I don’t want your help?"
Alessio’s lips twitched into something that wasn’t quite a smile. "Then I guess I’ll just have to convince you."
The war wasn’t just outside anymore. It was inside her, raging between her past and her present, between her family and the man who had once been her enemy but was quickly becoming something far more dangerous.
Her future.
And for the first time, Eva wasn’t sure which side she wanted to win.
