Chapter 15: The Surrender - Episode 5
Eva sat in the dimly lit room, her heart pounding as the weight of her choices pressed down on her. The confrontation with her brother had shaken her, but it was Alessio’s presence that unsettled her the most. He was watching her, his gaze unreadable, as if trying to decipher the storm raging inside her.
"You think I’m going to break, don’t you?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Alessio leaned against the doorway, arms crossed. "I think you’re at a crossroads. And I think you know that, too."
She hated that he was right. The past weeks had forced her to confront truths she had spent years running from. Her father’s betrayals, the secrets buried beneath their name, and now her brother, who seemed more a stranger than family. The war she had been fighting wasn’t just against Alessio—it had always been against herself.
"What do you expect me to do?" she demanded. "Forget everything? Walk away from my past and embrace yours?"
Alessio pushed off the wall and stepped toward her. "I expect you to survive, Eva. And I expect you to stop pretending you can do it alone."
She inhaled sharply, his words cutting through her defenses. She had spent so long believing that surrender meant weakness, that accepting his help meant losing herself. But maybe, just maybe, it wasn’t about losing—it was about choosing a different way to fight.
---
The following days passed in a blur of preparation. The tension within the DeLuca estate was palpable, an undercurrent of unease settling over everyone. Eva could feel the shift, the way people moved with a quiet urgency, as if waiting for the inevitable storm.
Alessio had been pulled into endless meetings, strategizing against threats she didn’t yet fully understand. But she wasn’t content to sit on the sidelines. If she was going to stay in this world, she needed to understand it.
One evening, she found herself in the study, pouring over files Alessio had left behind. Documents detailing alliances, betrayals, and a web of power she was only beginning to grasp.
"Looking for something?" a voice drawled from behind her.
Eva turned to find Marco leaning against the bookshelf, his ever-present smirk in place. "Just trying to understand the world I’ve been forced into," she replied coolly.
Marco’s eyes gleamed with something unreadable. "Careful, Eva. The more you understand, the harder it becomes to leave."
She met his gaze unflinchingly. "Who said I wanted to leave?"
He chuckled, pushing off the shelf. "Then let’s see how deep you’re willing to go."
---
The night of the meeting arrived faster than Eva had anticipated. It was a gathering of powerful figures, men and women who dictated the rules of the underworld. Alessio had insisted she stay close to him, but Eva had other plans.
Dressed in a sleek black dress that made her feel like a different version of herself, she moved through the room, listening, observing. She wasn’t just a prisoner here anymore—she was a player.
A voice stopped her in her tracks. "Eva."
She turned to see her brother standing across the room, tension lining his face. For a moment, neither of them spoke.
"We need to talk," he said finally.
Eva glanced around, aware of the eyes watching them. Then she nodded. "Not here."
She led him onto the balcony, the cool night air brushing against her skin. "What do you want, Luca?"
His expression was grim. "You’re in over your head. You think you can trust Alessio, but you don’t see the whole picture."
Eva crossed her arms. "And you do?"
Luca hesitated, then pulled a small envelope from his jacket and handed it to her. "Read this. Then decide if you still believe in him."
Eva took the envelope, her heart hammering as she glanced back toward the party. Alessio stood near the center of the room, engaged in conversation, but she could feel his gaze flicking toward her.
She looked back at her brother. "What am I going to find in here?"
Luca’s jaw tightened. "The truth."
Eva swallowed hard, gripping the envelope. She wasn’t sure she was ready for the truth—but she knew she couldn’t run from it any longer.
The silence of the estate was deceptive. The grand halls, adorned with opulence, whispered secrets that only the shadows knew. Eva stood at the edge of the balcony, staring down at the manicured gardens below. The air was thick with tension, a storm waiting to break.
Since the night of the gala, since the moment she had locked eyes with her brother across the room, everything had changed. Alessio had noticed too, his demeanor shifting into something unreadable. He had been distant yet ever-watchful, as if waiting for her next move.
And now, she had one.
A letter had appeared in her room that morning. No name, no signature, just a single line scrawled across crisp parchment:
Midnight. The garden maze. Come alone.
She knew it was a trap. It had to be. But she also knew she had no choice. If there was even the smallest chance that her brother had sent it, she had to take it.
---
Eva moved swiftly through the corridors, every step deliberate. The guards had relaxed over the past weeks, accustomed to her presence, their eyes not as sharp as before. Alessio had made her a fixture in his world, whether she wanted to be or not. But tonight, she would remind him that she was no one's possession.
The maze loomed ahead, its tall hedges forming a labyrinth that swallowed the moonlight. Eva’s heart pounded as she slipped through the entrance, her breath shallow.
"You came."
The voice was familiar, yet different. She turned sharply, her breath catching as she faced the figure emerging from the shadows.
"Luca," she whispered.
Her brother stood before her, older, hardened, but still the boy she had once adored.
"Eva, we don’t have much time," he said, stepping forward. "You need to listen to me."
She shook her head, emotions warring inside her. "You left me. You let them take me. Do you have any idea what I’ve been through?"
His jaw clenched. "I thought you were dead. I searched for you, but by the time I found out where you were, you were already too deep inside their world. And now... now you're with him."
Alessio. His name lingered between them like an unspoken curse.
"I don’t have a choice," she whispered. "You don’t understand."
Luca grabbed her hand. "Then let me make you understand. You’re not a prisoner, Eva. You’re a pawn. The DeLuca family has plans for you, ones you can’t even begin to imagine. But we can still get you out."
Fear and hope crashed through her like a tidal wave. "We?"
"There are people on the inside. People who want to take the DeLucas down. You can be part of that, Eva. But you need to decide now."
Footsteps sounded behind them.
Eva turned sharply, her breath catching as Alessio stepped into view, his expression unreadable.
"How touching," he murmured, his voice smooth, controlled. "A family reunion in the dead of night."
Luca stepped in front of Eva, his stance protective. "Stay away from her."
Alessio smirked, but his eyes were cold. "Eva, did you really think I wouldn’t know? Did you really believe I would let you out of my sight?"
Eva’s stomach twisted. She had been careful. But not careful enough.
"She’s leaving with me," Luca said firmly.
Alessio tilted his head, amusement flickering in his gaze. "That’s where you’re wrong. Eva isn’t going anywhere. And neither are you."
A low whistle cut through the night air—a signal. The hedges rustled as men emerged from the shadows, Alessio’s guards moving in, weapons drawn.
Luca’s grip on Eva’s hand tightened. "Run!"
Eva hesitated for only a moment before turning on her heel, her legs carrying her through the twisting paths of the maze. Gunfire erupted behind her, shouts of men clashing in the darkness. Her heart pounded in her ears as she ran, her only thought survival.
But even as she fled, she knew the truth.
There was no escaping Alessio DeLuca.
Not anymore.
