Episode 3: The Missing Connections

Episode 3: The Missing Connections Detective Emma Carter sits in her car outside the newspaper office, staring at the list of names she found in Rachel Dawson’s files. The names all have one thing in common—each person vanished without a trace, just like Rachel. Some were investigative journalists, others whistleblowers or activists. Whatever Rachel had uncovered, it wasn’t just dangerous—it was something that had been happening for years. Her first stop is the case of Daniel Royce, a former corporate whistleblower who had exposed corruption within a major defense contractor. Officially, he had died in a car crash, but his body was never recovered. His disappearance had been ruled accidental, yet Emma sees the pattern—Rachel must have connected the dots, realizing that Daniel’s case was part of something bigger. Emma tracks down Daniel’s sister, Maria Royce, who reluctantly agrees to meet. Maria looks exhausted, as if years of grief have worn her down. “I always knew Daniel didn’t just vanish,” Maria says, her voice tight with emotion. “He told me something before he disappeared. He said, ‘If anything happens to me, don’t believe the official story.’” Emma presses her for more details, but Maria hesitates. “He mentioned something about a group—people who make problems disappear. He called them The Watcher. I thought he was paranoid. But now… I don’t know.” The name sends a chill down Emma’s spine. The Watcher. The same words had been scrawled in Rachel’s notebook. Before Emma can ask more, Maria’s phone buzzes. She looks at the screen and turns pale. “I— I have to go.” Without another word, she rushes inside her house, locking the door behind her. Emma doesn’t follow. She knows fear when she sees it. --- Back at the precinct, Emma’s desk is cluttered with case files. She’s barely started piecing things together when Captain Reynolds, her superior, stops by her desk. “I heard you’re still looking into the Dawson case,” he says. “Be careful, Carter. Some cases don’t need solving.” Emma narrows her eyes. “With all due respect, sir, a woman disappeared. I’m not dropping this.” Reynolds sighs. “Just… don’t dig too deep.” He walks away, leaving Emma with a bad feeling in her gut. --- That night, Emma decides to take a break, but her mind keeps racing. She orders takeout and turns on the TV, but before she can take a bite, her phone rings. A private number. She hesitates, then answers. A distorted voice whispers, “You were warned.” The line goes dead. Her heart pounds. She rushes to her window and peers outside. A black sedan is parked across the street, its engine running. The driver is barely visible, but she knows—they’re watching her. Emma clenches her fists. Whoever these people are, they made Rachel disappear. They think they can scare her off. They’re wrong.
