Kit spent the next hour separating fact from fiction regarding supernatural beings. Kit learned that werewolves had heightened senses and abilities like dragons and vampires, but dragons and werewolves were not as strong or fast as vampires when in their human form. There was a time when witches, werewolves and dragons all lived in harmony, but as time passed, a lot of those bonds were broken as the thirst for power grew amongst each faction. Kit looked at pictures of her grandparents on her mother’s side, Alpha Melik and Luna Gwen, and then looked at pictures of her grandparents on her father’s side, Coven mother Geraldine and Darrell. Dragons’ weaknesses are that they are not as agile or fast as vampires or werewolves in their human form, they are very greedy creatures which caused them to be easily manipulated in some situations. When in dragon form, they are pretty difficult to battle because of their size, strength and their fire and ice breath. They are most vulnerable in their human form and can die by decapitation or heart removal, they don’t have healing powers that work as quickly as werewolves and vampires do, but they are difficult to hurt when in dragon form as their hide is nearly impenetrable. Witches were the easiest to kill as they are the same as humans, the only difference being their magical abilities.
Skye was on high alert again, even more so than when they were traveling through other countries because this was where the Blood Pack resided; another blood thirsty pack of werewolves whose thirst for power was only bested by the Sun Moon Pack. They stopped at a hole in the wall restaurant, so that Skye could use the pay phone and get in touch with her contacts in the country. She was paranoid, constantly looking over her shoulder, afraid that someone would recognize them and attack them at any given moment. Kit sat in one of the booths and ate her burger and fries while her mom used the phone. She ordered her a slice of cherry pie and a cup of coffee as she watched her mom through the window. When Skye had finally joined Kit, Kit had finished her meal and was sipping on her soda.
“Did you get a hold of them?” Kit asked, as her mom slid into the booth across from her. She nodded as she sipped her coffee.
“Someone will be waiting for us at the border to help us cross quickly. They also gave us the fastest route to the border.” She whispered, glancing around the restaurant. “We should get back on the road as soon as possible.” She took a bite of the pie before nodding to Kit’s plate. “Did you get enough to eat?” She asked, as she gulped down the rest of her coffee. Kit nodded her head as she sat her cup down.
“Yeah, I’m good to go.” Kit answered. Skye nodded before sliding out of the booth. She dropped some bills on the table and they made their way back out to the car. Kit got into the car quickly while Skye scoped out their surroundings. She hopped into the driver’s seat and they were off again. They arrived just outside the border and parked on the side of the road, after a few minutes a police truck pulled up behind them, lights flashing. Kit started to panic, but Skye looked in her rearview mirror and smiled.
“It’s okay.” She reassured, patting Kit’s leg. “It’s my contact.” Skye got out of the car and gave the big, burly man that was wearing the police uniform a hug. He beamed down at her as a woman hopped out of the passenger side. The woman raced around the truck and threw herself at Skye who held her tightly as they embraced. Skye pulled away, tears in her eyes as she smiled at the pair in front of her. She motioned with her hand to the truck as the pair peered into the truck to see Kit. Skye waved her hand signaling Kit to come out and Kit hesitantly got out of the truck. She made her way over to the trio and the woman hugged Kit immediately. Kit was caught off guard, but awkwardly hugged the woman back.
“Alright, Jane.” The man laughed. “You’re scaring her.” Jane released Kit, tears streaming down her face and glared at the man.
“She’s my blood, I can hug her.” Jane snapped, as she wiped the tears from her face. Kit’s eyes snapped up to look at the woman and she was reminded of the picture she saw in her mom’s journal of her dad’s younger sister, this woman looked like her, but it wasn’t her. Skye chuckled.
“Kit, this is your second cousin on your dad’s side.” Skye stated and Kit smiled over at the woman. It was good to see some of her extended family. “This is her husband, Reggie.” Skye said, introducing Kit to the people that were going to help them get home. Kit smiled up at him and he smiled back.
“It’s nice to finally meet you, Kit.” He said, shaking her hand.
“It’s nice to meet both of you too.” Kit beamed. Skye smiled at the exchange before taking on a look of concern.
“We should get going.” She interjected, snapping out of her nostalgia. Reggie nodded his head as he looked around.
“They're definitely here.” He warned, sniffing the air. Kit regarded him curiously. Jane was a witch if she was a member of her dad’s family, but Reggie acted like a wolf. “We’ll have to ride together in my truck, once you make it across the border, there will be a car waiting.” He said as he helped Skye move their bags into the bed of his truck. Skye nodded her head.
“Okay.” Jane commented as she looked at Kit. “I’m going to put a concealment spell on you and your mom.” She finished as she grabbed Kit’s hand. She chanted something quietly to herself as she closed her eyes. After she finished with Kit, she grabbed Skye’s hand and did the same thing. She nodded her head at Reggie who instructed them all to get into the truck.
“Where are they?” Skye demanded once they were all inside the truck.
“Who?” Kit uttered, looking from Skye to Reggie, worry etched onto her face.
“Wolves of the Blood Pack.” Reggie growled out as he started to drive towards the border, his sirens and lights still on. They were coming up on the turnpike when a group of men and women formed a line in front of them. All traffic was halted, and Reggie slammed on the brakes. Kit gasped as the sudden jolt surprised her. Reggie looked at Jane and Skye gripped the back of his seat, trying to see the group of people that were holding up traffic. She immediately recognized her sister, Monique, and inhaled sharply.
“What is it?” Kit squeaked, looking at her mom.
“Monique.” Skye murmured. Kit leaned forward trying to see her aunt, the one who had left the pack to be with her mate. “Why is she here? This isn't her pack.” Skye was talking more to herself than anyone else.
“Do it, babe.” Reggie encouraged, as he gripped the steering wheel. Jane started chanting and the wolves started falling to their feet, grasping at their heads and covering their ears as though something was hurting them. Kit looked at Jane in awe as Reggie slammed his foot on the gas once more, speeding towards the werewolves. Jane waved her arm and the werewolves blocking their path were thrown to the side of the road as Reggie sped across the border. Once they were safely across, Reggie came to a stop on the side of the road and parked behind two cars. Skye, Reggie and Jane immediately hopped out of the truck and unloaded the bed of the truck. Placing their things in the two separate cars. Skye opened Kit’s door and hauled her out of the car.
“Get in the white car.” Skye demanded and Kit finally snapped out of her daze and obeyed, running over to the white car and hopping into the passenger seat. Skye hugged Jane and Reggie. “There really is no way of me convincing you guys to come with us to the town?” She asked, looking them both in the eyes. Reggie and Jane exchanged glances.
“We’re going to be off the grid for...” Jane paused. “A long time.” She finished, as she rubbed her belly. “Kit may be the only known hybrid alive right now, but we’re going to be trying to conceal our own hybrid within the year.” She said proudly. Skye gasped, covering her mouth with her hand. Jane looked up at Reggie with love in her eyes.
“We don’t want to risk the town turning us away.” Reggie added. “We're going to have to be very careful about who we trust.” Skye nodded her head in understanding.
“Charisma is meeting us at a safe house to help us with some strong concealment spells.” Jane added. Skye’s eyes started to overflow with tears as she hugged Jane and Reggie again.
“Be safe and thank you for today.” She rushed before jumping into her car and driving away. Kit watched out the window as Jane and Reggie jumped into the other car and sped off in another direction.
