Girl on the Run
“What sets you apart can sometimes feel like a burden and it's not. And a lot of the time, it's what makes you great.” — Emma Stone
Kit watched as the gas station went up in flames, her mother tossing the gas can into the fire as the heat warmed her skin. Kit sat in the passenger seat of the old Volkswagen watching her mother through the window, a grim expression upon her face as she played with the gem held in the necklace around her neck. The building began to crumble as the fire devoured everything in its path while Kit’s mom watched the flames jump and dance in front of her. Kit’s mom hopped into the driver’s seat, started up the engine and drove off without a backwards glance as the gas station crumbled in a heap of fire and rubble, the four bodies burning inside the building and erasing any trace that they were there.
Kit looked over at her mom as they sped down the highway, trying to put as much distance between them and the burning gas station as possible. Skye had grown cold since they fled their home, and they lost Kit’s dad. She had to be, because Kit and her mother, Skye, were not like normal people, they had a cumbersome secret.
For as long as Kit could remember, she had been on the run. Kit vaguely remembered a moment of peace before all the chaos happened and she tried desperately to cling onto the memories as she got older. She was five years old, living in a cottage style home with her mom and dad in a small town in Kansas called Andover. Life was good, or at least as good as it could be for a five-year-old. She remembered going for walks hand and hand with her mom and dad, she remembered playing with her neighbor, Holden, who had proposed to her when they were four, and then it was all gone in a flash.
Kit vividly remembered the day they had to flee their home even though she was only five at the time. Skye told her that she knew something was wrong immediately, something that she could feel deep inside her. Kit was playing in the front yard while her mom was watering the plants when she said she felt a pain in her heart. She immediately packed a suitcase, grabbed Kitina and took off in their minivan. Kit remembered feeling really scared and confused as she kept asking her mom what was wrong. They had spent the whole day driving across state lines before Skye told Kit that her dad was gone, and bad people were after them. Kit cried herself to sleep that night.
Skye was a very strong werewolf from a very prominent wolf pack known as the Tundra Pack. Skye was the only child of the pack's leaders, Alpha Melik and Luna Guinevere. Alpha Melik had set up an arranged marriage between Skye and a werewolf from another pack who was next in line to be alpha of his pack as a way to create unity between the two packs; however, Skye had found her fated mate, Kit’s father, Javious, who happened to be a powerful wizard from a very prominent witching family known as the Lafayette's. The Lafayette's led an extremely formidable coven known as the Redwing Coven. After Skye found out she was pregnant with Kit, Kit’s mom and dad ran away together when the Tundra pack and Redwing Coven refused to allow them to marry. Many supernatural beings did not believe in blood mixing, and these two factions were some of the purest groups of their kind. For five years Kit’s father kept the three of them hidden away from magic with a very powerful concealment spell; but Skye said the only way the concealment spell could have fallen was if Kit’s father was dead, which would break the hold that the concealment spell had. A great deal of werewolves, witches, vampires, and dragons were after them because Kit was born of both werewolf blood and witch blood making her the only known living being of her kind; a hybrid. All of the factions feared her because she was something they were unfamiliar with; so, what do you do with a being that potentially poses a threat? You kill them, and as far as Kit and Skye knew, that was exactly what the supernatural world was trying to do.
